Title: So confused
Post by: TheBolian on April 07, 2004, 07:03:25 pm
Hi guys,

I'm brand new *waves* and I am so very confused.
I have had Freespace 2 since it was released and thought to myself, hmm there must be some mods for this great piece of work, and I stumbled across a number of sites!

What seems to be missing from many sites is a guide to what type ofmods are available, how to go about installing mods, essential files and whatnot!

Now I am a member of many forums and hate it when n00bs come asking for information without looking. But I HAVE looked around and I am still clueless!

So could anyone point me in the direction of any guides which explain all the mod issue and stuff! Words like Open Source Project, Campaigns using OS, campaigns not using them, FRED, table files etc etc, are rolling round in my head without making sense!

Sorry to be a pain in the backside!

Hehe,
 :welcome:

Yes! First one! :D
Anyway, the SCP, just download the latest EXE (you can find it in the sub-forum at the top of the main forum). It's refered to as the SCP, not the OS, and all campaigns can use it :)
FRED, you can get a new SCP version as well. If you want to start modding at all, you have to get the VPView Toolkit from www.freespace-2.com. Check the Wiki for more info. Table files store all the ship info that Freespace uses.

To install mods, well, just stick the textures in the maps directory, tables in tables, etc, etc. Generally, however, the big campaigns, like Inferno, come with an installer.

BTW, you will need a launcher for the SCP, which you can get in the SCP forum ;)

Installing mods and FS2_open are both covered in either my FAQ or the link I give to the wiki. Try them both out.

It's a good idea to leave it on at all times while you hang around here.  You get used to the closeness of it eventually, and it makes quite the fashion statement to boot ;)

On that note, enjoy yourself with the SCP and stick around.

With pleasure ;)

Welcome to HLPBB! Exits are to the rear and left in case of emergency, and shotguns are located under the seats. Knife fights are strictly prohibited in favor of more interesting 35mm mortar duels and machete jello wrestling. The giant rats in the barracks are not for eating. You are assigned to be the personal slave of the admin who appears in the blank space below:

Thunder.

You will serve your master unto, and beyond, your untimely death, as do all others here. :D And do avoid the airvents; seeing any black-red spiny things near them may cause you seizures and nightmares for years to come. If a Shivan happens to approach you, that's just Carl; give him your lunch and back away slowly.

Oh, and note: Keep away from the air-vents and the Room'O'Sex, Drugs, Booze and Space-Crack. If you go near either of them you'll most likely not be coming back.

Welcome to HLP. There are exits to the left and rear. Do not attempt to use them. Under your seat you will find empty beer cans, cookie crumbs, corpses of newbies, dog eared dungeon Porn mags left by Shrike... oh, and a Flamethrower. Unfortunately, we're out of napalm, so you'll have to bludgeon people to death with them.

In the event of serious conflict, there are plasma rifles in the forward locker, though these can only be opened by an Admin or Hyperintelligent shade of the colour Blue. If, for whatever reason, you find yourself crawling around in the ductwork, there's a better than average chance you'll encounter a Shivan. They're easy to spot with the five legs and all. If you're lucky, it's just Carl, who responds well to food rewards. If not, then at least you die quickly. Be aware that the entrance to the main control room is guarded by subspatial claymore mines.

Do not mention FS3. Karajorma's FAQ is your friend. Have a nice day.

That's roughly it, though it's evolved. I still remember writing that :D
