Title: What now?
Post by: Turambar on April 07, 2004, 10:05:05 pm
Does anybody have a request for something they would like to see prettified (made pretty)?  i've done engine trails and beams, so whats next?

Oh, and please make the request reasonable

Edit: See, I want to do as much as i can before my photoshop 30-day trial period ends, i got 28 days left

well, you could try to just take all the textures, resize them to 512*512, or 1024*1024 and add detail.

would i have to remap them? *considers possibility*

I don't believe so, unless you change the actual orientation of the textures.

The originals should be in the Sparky.vp if memory serves - but I'm not at my home machine right now so can't check.

Well, I'll probably need some help, we'll make it a project, something definitely worthy of the highlights

High-Res Ship Textures by Turambar and Crew (well, I don't know who will help me as of right now)

And how do i open the VP file?

Also, theres Sparky_fs2.vp and sparky_hi_fs2.vp, which one?

sparky hi has some hi-res textures, but not many. sparky has the rest of the textures :D

also, you may want to grab .vpview from Karajoma's FAQ (at least, thats teh easiest location i can remember) to open the files.

This is going to be tough

Yeah, I tried doing it on a few occassions. My theory was that they didn't really need hand retouching, only a clever application of PS filters and a bit of lovin'. I was mostly wrong.

Tried it on the Herc2 and Myrmidon, but all I managed to do was slightly sharpen to lines and so forth. Once the effect started to get really noticeable, you would also get a bunch of other crap that was unwanted.

Best of luck to ya Turambar, you've done great with the beams and trails.

Depending on the scale of this, it might be an idea to work out what people want in the ship textures before going ahead with it...

Myself I see it thus:

Shivans:
Very dark with ample red glows. Reference: FS intro movie: "They had these death black ships"...

Terrans:
Grey, steel / metallic and/or other. More towards the style of Independence War 2 than Freelancers plasticy/cartoon style...

Vasudans:
Almost a "baked clay" brown with green glows similar to that of the Shivans. Very biological in nature.

But of course, others may feel different...

Well, I'm using filters, but I'm also using the hand-blur tool and the smudge tool, as well as making the textures rather... large 1024 on the largest side for the highest LOD.  I think perhaps with the large sizes, practicality for downloading and uploading will die utterly

I think you've bitten off more than you can chew here

Its just that retexturing the ships to a higher resolution is a HUGE job, and requires lots of expertise with texturing. Someone like maybe aldo or Venom (err, Nico) might have an easier time of it, but even then it would be a very large job to do. I appluad your initiative, so if you want to proceed just take it slow and don't worry if its doens't look too good. You'll get better, and if I were you, I wouldn't worry about your Photoshop trial running out, if yuo get what I mean,

I think the only person who'd be able to do it is LightSpeed. But we keep overwhelming him anyway.

I didn't mean it in a bad way Turambar. Just don't expect too much from yourself early on, textures are just about the hardest things to do  right.

I'de love to see what you've done with the Herc2. If you have some webspace, maybe you could throw up some screenies. If not, try contacting anon or..uhm whoever owns swooh, forget exactly who it is....

I'm not new to this, I started with JK2, photo editor and paint a few years ago (like 1) and then i made stuff for JA and i played with photoshop in my art class.  I'm an IB art student, If i put my mind to it and record it in my sketchbook, I CAN DO ANYTHING!!

*does Howard Dean scream*!!

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
