As the title and poll says, how many people would be interested in an archive of FreeSpace 1 / 2 screenshots? I've got this all thought out and think it would be a pretty neat (not to mention simple) idea. I just need to know if there's interest in it.
Therefore, say as much on the poll!
There's two or three obvious ways this could be done, outlined below:
1 - Website:
The most obvious choice, chuck everything into a catagorised website that can be updated via HLPs PHP code.
2 - Forum:
A new forum section with subsections for each variation. Very very simple to maintain - but I'm not sure what kind of load that would put on the forum (using it to upload crap-loads of images).
3 - Wiki:
I've got almost 0 Wiki experience but a couple of people have mentioned this.
Also, I know this isn't strictly general discussion - but the widest possible audience is based here.
-
Forum form, IMO, since, let's be honest, no-one really checks the web pages.
-
I think website is better to format, but I think the forum would benefit from something like a nice prominent 'Files' button at, for example, the top, which would take you to a page of links for screenshots, documentation, SCP Files, SCP Media etc. I know we have more or less that at the momentin the SCP Forum, but it'd be nice and accessible to everyone who signs in then :)
-
I think a forum form would be a good idea :) This would be great for showing FS2 off to my freinds, hehe :D
-
Website.
What better way could we come up to make people actually *check* the websites? :D
-
1 - Website

-
I would say wiki if it weren't for the fact that it's a pain to get those pictures hosted on HLP's servers rather than having them hosted on the webspace of whoever uploads them (no more than a website but still)
-
I agree that a screenshots section would be fairly pointless, as
1) (as Karajorma mentioned) it would take up a lot of space
2) screenshots that can be posted by anyone you'd get some pretty pointless screenshots in there. No one's going to browse through 2000 screenshots (because i guarantee you that soon you'll have that many)
-
Website and Forum.
Have it whenver someone posts an image, its added to the website as well...

Er - don't we have something like this already on the HLP 2.0 site? :nervous:
-
Website form. Forum could be complicated and hardly editable.
HTML format is reliable.
I have made some screenshots from the original FS2 volition campaign using VOLITION FreeSpace(not FSO). Are you interested in those?

This makes me think ... good point.

YES! We DO have it. But most of the pictures there are from other mods + FreeSpace Open. As far as I understand from Kalfireth's first post, this new thingy would be about Original FreeSpace.
This post is long enough, so I include my signature. ;)

Actually I wasn't on about the space. That's up to the admins :) What I was on about is the fact that if you put pics on the wiki you'll still have to e-mail them or something to one of the admins so that it can be put up on the 3DAP servers so that you can link to it.
If you didn't do that people will put them up on their own webspace and then forget why they're there and delete them leaving loads of dead links.
I do have an idea though ;7
For that reason I'm thinking a website. The main HLP site already has a picture upload bit doesn't it? How hard would it be to then sort out the pics like the Mod Database (http://mods.moddb.com/2546/?view=all) does? (I've linked to the MG one as an example).

Well, the ModDatabase guys do not expect that amount of pictures we would post. I dare say this. If you have a look at mods of other games, you will realize that they do not have focus of posting more than 5-10 screenshots. My campaign has 14 images posted, and they are almost out of control, since ModDatabase only shows 9 pictures per page. Who would visit the second page?
-
the website needs some content, it's pathetic think about how many little mods there are out there, like single ships, how many of them are on the site?
-
Gotcha, thanks for the input guys - thread unstuck. I'll see where this gos.
-
I have no opinion on this matter.
-
1) Make it a website
2) Pimp it more than my 3-year old sister
3) profit.

*Suggestions*
- Forum To Website (both in other words)
- Some sort of photo sheet 12/18/24 per sheet (thumbnails - low res)
- Catergorize by date
[/color]
-
I'm not sure what you're getting at, K. We can already fully do this, with automatically generated thumbnails and categorising, through HLP 2.0. :nervous:
-
I think it would be awesome to have a simple website set up to showcase the SCP improvements. For example, today I pimped HLP on a BT board, in a Freespace 2 topic. So, when/if these new people arrive, they're going to have to spend quite a bit of time in order to see all that we have done. I know, we've got the highlights, but it would be more convenient IMHO to have a gallery of screenshots and say "ok, look here and try not to drool to badly."
A simple gallery layout ought to do it, and users could submit various cool screenshots, which showcase just how far we've come.
Thats my 2 cents anyway.
edit: please, don't do it as a forum. No one ever checks forums, especially if you have to register to view them. A website with thumbnails is so much simpler and more effective.

...:nervous: Oh!
In that case, I'm going to volunteer to make damn heavy use of this fairly soon - after a little preparatory work. Please see the Staff forum for that ;)

Those are nice shots, but they're not particularly exceptional. If you can get some screens which really stretch and show the capabilities of the engine, those would be ideal. :)
-
Are FreeSpace Open shots allowed?
-
Anything is, my plan is to divide things by catagory:
FreeSpace:
FS Images
FS Mod Images
FreeSpace2:
FS2 Images
FS2 Mod Images
FS2 Source Code Images
-
Freespace Open shots are the only ones that should be allowed :)
-
I believe Mod maklers would leave their shots for themselves on thier homepages.
I absolutely disagree with you, BW. That makes no sense. FreeSpace is FreeSpace. FreeSpace Open is merely a subfamiliy(= byproduct)
-
FSOpen is an improvement. Plus, people can find pl;enty of FS2 shots anyways - what they are less likely to have seen - and thus be more impressed by - are FSO shots.

Guys this isn't the place for that kind of banter... every aspect of FS should be shown off - from the original to the great stuff people have done with the source code and with mods.
Of course as far as mods and the source code goes - I'll try and gain permission for anything that belongs to someone else.. maybe even link to it in some form as well. If anyone doesn't want their stuff to appear on the site then they can ask for it to be taken down, it's not that big a deal

stability: only one true crash bug, the famous "y" one. which is worked hard on.
reliability: what do you mean? the fact that FRED gives warnings, or that something bugs you about table errors? those are all user errors.

*pulls out large trout* Take it to PM please.
-
Sidenote: Would people please stop posting screenshots of Their Finest Hour? I mean, I knew Colossus was going down before I even owned the game.
Let's try to keep at least some things as surprises, shall we? :D

Do you think there is anyone who does not know it? All the people who are still playing FreeSpace knows what will happen to the Colossus.
And there will be no new players, from who, we SHOULD conceal the meridian of the mission.
-
Actually I'm sending my buddy JediKoricken a copy of the game to play because I said that he needed to... and I got MrFun a copy of the Freespace Disc 3 and it's in the mail, traveling by FEDEX!

Wait a minute, we should spoil? :wtf:
Some people who've only recently got FS2 or are not frequent FS-oriented BB goers DO find it a little irritating and gladly point it out. Though the main FS campaign is as chewed as it is, the game is still getting some new players.
-
Ill have to block this site from JediK because he will see the entire campaign...
-
oh, then you might also want to block every screenie from FS there is....
and why is this so important to the rest of us?
-
ok n/m
-
They said there were no new players and I mentioned one that I was going to draft into playing Freespace. I dont want it spoiled for him, he did hard work on SS2's, The Shock Project and is working with CCM. It might ruin his day. Hes very picky about spoilers.
Then again I'll try to get some impressive shots delivered...
-
We get newbies all the time. I do agree that the major spoiler pics should be placed on a page with warnings. That goes for mods too (so derelict, homesick etc don't get spoiled).
-
Well I don't think it'd be to hard to whack "Warning, screenshots contained within may contain spoilers of actual campaign missions and/or mods. By viewing them you accept that you may learn a few things that were intended as suprises."...
-
Oh, go on then....

Another snippet one :)

I can't compete with that but hows this oldish one:
-
Note: Yes thats from what was once Into The Maelstrom.... jus ran out of enthusiasm.
-
Both very impressive! Everyone feel free to keep them coming - I might not get anything done too soon.. but at least I could back track to this thread and look for things again. It doesn't matter whether its SCP or not, its all good here
-
Flipside... the background... gorgeous.

Do full screenies, they're just... better. More official. ;) Great shot, btw.
