We crippled our agriculture industry and destroyed hundreds of thousands of cattle to ensure the safety of the beef-eating world when we found out about it. What does America do when they get lumbered with it? Denies there's a real problem.
I swear to God, my first $2.7mil is going on a nuclear equipped Tomohawk that I'm shipping to Iran.
-
Well, thats what you get when Monsanto contributes several million to the Republican war-chest. Can't say I didn't know about this before, its still a ****ing disgrace.
-
It's like I said - I give the human race 10, maybe 20 years.
-
???
I know you all are strictly anti-American by definition, but this isn't quite a parallel situation to what happened in England. Why the USDA doesn't want testing on all animals is slightly beyond me, I'll admit. It may be because the test is prone to false positives, which will do a lot more than just cause worry. But there was all of 1 case of Mad Cow found in the US (the animal having come from out of the country, all of the herds it came into contact with were tested and came up negative) as opposed to the situation in Europe where entire herds were infected. The only reason that company wants to test its beef is to ship it to Japan, who are being paranoid about the whole situation in the first place.
-
So they ****ing should be.
-
Anti-American americans... breed in America... I like that ;)
So, how about creating a new race? :)

No, they do like the song says and blames Canada...
-
Good grief, the anti-american sentiments are ridiculous. Canada did practically the same thing and I condemn what's happened (as a Canadian myself) but I don't say, "Oh, here's a reason we should HATE Canada for."
And that comment about the Tomahawk. Here we condemn America whenever they kill civilians by mistake in a warzone yet spouting nonsense about a matter that really shouldn't be treated in such a trivial manner. Nuclear weapons? And more than hinting that such a weapon should be used?
Come on, there's plenty of more productive ways to condemn the poor practices of some people in America.
-
Thats the price you pay for ruling the empire.
Brits should know, trust us.
-
See, the thing is, this isn't an exception to the political process/system, this IS the system. American, British and to a lesser extent Canadian. This is ****, and Kerry also. Democrats, Republicans, they all feed from the same trough.
Whatever crap American (and British, French etc) companies subject the domestic markets to, they do it 1000x worse to foreign markets. If you're American, consider yourself lucky; you're only being ****ed. If you were say, Bolivian, you'de be getting ****ed, in the ass, with a dildo so large it would have to be constructed in space.
Every once in a while, they get caught and issued a little wrist-slap. This BST stuff is nothing. Read NoLogo or see The Corporation for some truly sick ****.

I can't stop laughing. There IS hope for the world. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3613217.stm)

im getting sick and tired of this anti american crap.. i had no idea people were this bigoted against my country (reference to certain people in the thread .. not the thread itself)
-
I'm assuming you mean me and anon? Its not bigotry if its justified. I dare you to defend the actions of Monstanto in the BST case. This is hardly blind hate as you suggest, its a very specific issue, even if it is indicative of a much larger issue.

It's an0n. Cut him some slack.

And for that matter, where the hell has Stryke run off to? Its usually a big gun/bigger gun pissing contest between 'em, but its a somewhat lopsided challenge, eh, with one of them AWOL? Who, who I ask you will up the ante?
-
I think he managed to get perma-banned
-
stryke got banned? wow
direct your disgruntlement at the administration, or the particular company
NOT THE ENTIRE COUNTRY - when a company in a foreign country acts up i direct my complaints against the company, or when a foriegn countries current adminstration acts up i direct my comments against the administration
-
Yea, i`m american and its a double edged sword that cuts both ways, but..
I still feel that freedom of speech should rule over all so i`m nuteral on any anti american sediment . :D
-
whitelight: i'm all for them criticising - just criticise the people who did it , not the entire freaking country
-
I thought Stryke just went on a short vacation. For a few weeks that is.
-
Kazan, point taken..
I`m a better listener, than a speaker.
(edit) If I don`t like whats being said, like Shrike said once, if you don`t like whats said don`t post, i`ve taken that into consideration..
Un oh one minuet left of my birthday
-
Damn computer clock is off, my last statment was how you say invalid
You must excuse me, to many rum and cokes tonight at the local bar.. :D :D
(edit) Celibrating my birthday, well I can`t complain because I only paid for the first drink, shot some pool, and may I say my pool skills went out the window after the first 4 drinks Hehehe. ;)

how many cows were found to be infected in the UK before the mass slaughter?
-
Don't know, but it was a lot more than one. Found this on HowStuffWorks.com:
To the cattle industry, an outbreak of mad cow disease is an ever-looming nightmare. In the 1980s and '90s, the brain disorder infected 180,000 livestock in Europe and claimed dozens of human lives, devastating the British cattle industry. Britain, the United States and most other major cattle-producing nations have imposed stringent measures to control the disease, but another outbreak is a very real possibility.

Err, if I have time I'll try to dig up a cool story how Rupert Murdoch's media goonsquad try to silence two of their own reporters who wanted to make the story public, and failed. Its quite inetersting, and for once Fox has been a force for good, though it should be noted that it was despite their best efforts, not because of them.
-
I'll remind the HLP populace that Mad Cow is only spread though the brain and nervous tissue of the infected animals.
Americans as a BIG rule don't eat this part of the animal, nor is it fed back to the rest of the herds, unlike other parts of the animal.
-
I dont hate America......I just dont like it either, especially after Clinton resigned (as bad as that stupid scandal was, not many other bad things happened, so its sorta nuetral). Ever since the Cold war, America has just about been in every nation's face and its starting to get pretty annoying.......
-
Clinton didn't resign. He served 2 terms, the legal maximum. And no, its not a tragedy Clinton resigned, atleast with **** the world knows where it stands. With Billy, it was all "whisper sweet nothing in your ear to distract you from the fact that you're being screwed bigtime". Actually, I hope **** wins in November. Better to have it out in the open.
Theres a saying about a glove and an iron fist and some velvet..something to that effect. Can't quite remember.
-
Liberator, that is not the issue... if a corporation is trying to appeal to a certain type of clients by doing something that is not illegal and that in some countries it is encoraged (testing products), why should the "Department of Agriculture" try to stop it? Hell, it should be forcing the other corporations do the same thing. Especially if they were going to do it on their own!!
Creekstone was poised to create its own lab and use a rapid test already approved by the USDA. Before the ban went into effect, the company expected to ship as much as 2,000 tons of beef to Japan this year.

Could be.. On the other hand, there are lots of unknowns and almost nothing can be said conclusively about this whole TSE deal.

I heard the BSE can infect a person via a scratch or bite?

I'm happy that people can still find something to laugh about. And coming from Finland I can say that, America rules. They got Disney World, the film industry, and Burger King. Their government might be in a bit of a turmoil but all things change I suppose...
-
if **** wins in november you can kiss the world goodbye
-
I'll kiss the US goodbye and move to Canada, that's for sure.
-
I don't hate America.
I just like the UK more :p
-
vyper: and that's ok :D
-
I dont hate it either...
Its just that its so easy to make fun of Americans...
Canada is one of the few places in the world where you can make a living making fun of Americans... though thats not as true anymore...
-
Wow is there anything the US hasnt done to discredit themselves? I mean i know Canada and the rest of the world isnt the greatest and we all got our own problems.
But this US thing is a trqavesty. One lie after another, one **** after another, and so on.
Seems the US politicians are doing alot of screwing around and nothing good for its own people
When will the US people rise up and take power of their own country? When will democracy rise its head from the capitilists shoulders?
-
UK! UK! UK! UK!
brits rule :D
we at one point were THE superpower, with global control and wealth greater than that of america today. Were just nice, giving some of it back and all, or losing it eventually.
Someday, im sure America will be replaced by another superpower, such as China, or maybe Russia, if they ever sort themselves out.

The New Kalmari Union!

We got weed.:D

Actually the whole BSE handling thing in Britain, AFAIK, was exemplified when the moron who was found to be the source of the outbreak got compensation from the government.

Let's not forget the governments exemplarary handling of the whole 'foot and mouth' debacle - a disease which was not fatal to the animal, and which could only be transmitted to humans in very rare circumstances (close contact, i.e. to livestock workers...or maybe sheep-shaggers). The obvious solution? Quarentine half the country and kill every animal within a 100m radius.

That's called containment aldo mate, I'd rather that than a 1 in 2 million chance of it being passed to humans.
p.s. i pulled that number out my arse, you get my point tho

Yeah, but foot and mouth wasn't even a threat. The only problem with the infected livestock is that they could be considered 'lower quality' and fetch less money. The disease was treatable, and vaccinatable. It could not be contracted by humans (and even then wasn;t fatal - flu like symptoms IIRC) except in extreme circumsatances of close contact. The reaction - nothing short of a full scale national emergency - seems nothing short of deliberate scaremongering.
EDIT - oh, and the 5 suspected cases were negative. So no human contraction occurred.

I agree that the government had the right idea in containing foot and mouth. It could have caused much worse damage to the agricultural industry. My problem is that they just executed the plan incredibly sloppily.

On a side note and propably as much off-topic you can get, I give you a story of wonderful experience that is Life of Janos Kosminen. Morphine is among the best things I've ever experienced, yet somehow frightening. When faithfully serving my dear Finnish Defence Forces they decided I should be a part of some bizarre medical experiment, not that different from those seen in UFO/goverment conspiracy or zombie movies.
As my comrades were doing their utmost in rain and hell that is shooting range, I was dragged into a hospital. After my initial night - which was pretty much listening to music, eating donuts and watching TV - I was pumped up with tranquilizers, painkillers and some other drugs I do not know. After this traumatizing experience they ripped my wisdom teeth away in a cruel and not-very-painful surgery that took 1½ minutes. Was I shocked and my life devastated!
Delivering my nearly unconscious and very tender body back into bed, the Men in White penetrated my dear skin and flesh with a canyl, which lead straight into a medicine pump filled with morphine - why, I do not know. I was allowed to edit my state of pain by simply pressing a button, after which the hellish machine would inject .5mg on PCA Morphine into my blue veins. Being a masochist I am I suffered the delirious, orgasmic and very, very high 12 hours that followed. For if I was strapped into such a weird and inspirating object, wasn't it my duty to try and empty the entire medicine pump? So I tried, yet failed miserably.
After symptoms included terrible itching and urge to get some more. Brrr.
Morphine is evil. It feels better than sex, birds, sleep, weed, midsummer night alcohol or that moment when your hangover vanishes and new strenght twists your body. [Yes, I am living on the edge!]

You couldn't empty the machine because it's set to only allow so many does an hour.

Aldo, go easy on Lib. He misses the grand scheme of both "humor" and "sarcasm."
EDIT: Ok, so go easy on him when he's making it this easy.

Sorry, but sometimes it's hard to resist shooting into the barrel when the fish are so tightly picked :D

But I tried! :(
It's ~25 mg over the course of 4 hours, which is actually really, really much. I didn't come even close.
Durr durr.

So I'm a moron, what's new?
-
not that
