Err...would the AIDS bomb have worked? Wouldn't the heat generated by the explosion have eliminated the virus?

Edit: forgot to mention, such a tactic might now work, since teh sheer heat of the blast might just destroy the virus. but please correct me if im wrong.

Thank goodness they were stopped... but yeah, how would it have actually worked? I thought AIDS was so structurally fragile that it wouldn't have survived in open air for long, let alone in a blast.

The general principle behind it is so stupid it doesn't bare thinking about.
Firstly, the heat wouldn't destroy all the virus. All the **** they spoon-feed you about AIDS is complete crap. They'll tell you all this crap about it not surviving the cooling process used for donated blood and how it won't survive in open air and it's all crap. Granted, some of the blood itself would be burned to a cinder, but enough would survive with active virii in it to be dangerous.
But then there's the small fact that the blood would have to land on open cuts to infect people. And even then, the body's immune system would attack and kill the majority of the foreign blood and the virus along with it. If 500 people were bathed in blood, mayb 50 would become infected.
Put simply, it's vastly more complicated than a nail-bomb and about 1/10 as effective.
They'd be better off sending 50 people out with the flu to ride buses all day and create en epidemic. It's certainly kill a few hundred old people and it'd cripple the economy for weeks.

Which leads me to wonder: why do the ZOMG TERRISTS always go for the rarest/most difficult to produce virus/biological contaminator?
I would go for flu, diarrhea, streptococci sp. or something like that, a simple, stupid and easy-to-find virus everyone hates. Much easier to jihad when your opponents have to **** every now and then in the middle of the firefight. [And actually some Crusader leader, might even have been Richard?, DID fight while suffering from explosive diarrhea.]

Chopping flies with an axe isn't too much fun or easy. Last time I tried that I ended up with one chopped mosquito and one chopped in half desk. :blah: Instead I 'modified' my swatter by putting tiny daimonds on it. That should... puncture those damned mosquitos :D

The virus can survive for a short time outside of a host, but like most viral infections, it needs cells to infect, and quickly, the Aids cells themselves have a moderately short coherent life with which to find and infect another cell. In a human host, this is plenty of time, however, in this situation, I don't think there would be much threat unless you get a situation such as the Hep-B case in Israel, which came from a piece of bone from the suicide bomber getting imbedded in a bystanders skin, carrying Hep-B. This COULD cause infection if the bomber had been suffering from Aids or any other number of illnesses :(
Personally, I'd be far more concerned with the number of airborne agents a bomber could carry, which would be thrown far and wide by the explosion.

Ofcourse they could've laced some nails with packages of AIDS and have it blow up so the nails can penetrate + infect ppl. However, terrorists tend (sadly with some exceptions) not to be very smart people.

They weren't gonna just spray Acme "AIDS" bottles ont he bomb, you know - they had infected blood, so that'd take care of needing a cell, wouldn't it?

Not unless he's bringing along an oxygenator, a filter, a pump etc, he would have to carry so much equipment to keep the blood viable he wouldn't have room for the bomb. The only way Aids could effectively be used as a weapon is if the person themselves had been deliberately infected with the disease.
