Title: Freeware Battle of Endor
Post by: Admiral Nelson on April 15, 2004, 06:40:13 pm
I haven't seen this posted here before, so....  Some fellow has put together an amazing freeware Battle of Endor arcade game. For a one man show it is quite impressive. The models used are pretty simplistic, and many seem to have no textures at all, but it conveys the atmosphere of the battle far better than any of the X-Wing games ever did, IMO. TIE fighter waves seem to have at least 50 fighters in them. I don't think I've seen a game with so many craft on screen at once. The AI seems pretty smart, your wingmen actually shoot at shield generators and don't seem to crash into things as in some other games... :)

I haven't managed to beat it yet....

It only about 17 megs to download, so give it a look! :)

Fixed link (http://www.bruneras.com/news.htm)

Whoops.. fixed link.

I forgot to mention -- it's actually programmed in VB!! I am amazed that such smooth performance could be had in a 3D VB game.

No, thank you, playing XWA instead.

XWA it ain't, but it is a fun little arcade game. I'm always impressed by what indie developers can do. Not too many years ago this thing would have been a classic, now it can be made by a VB programmer in his spare time.

This sentence convinces me not to touch this game. I am playing to enjoy it, and spend my free-time, not to have something that makes me mad.
The last game I had enough about was Serious Sam. I changed to cheating mode after trying to beat a single stage for a whole day.

You should give it a go Ace, I haven't had so much gratuitous fun since Doom, theres nothing quite as satisying as having a nice shielded X-Wing against those helpless little Ties ;)

I'm getting really pissed, because the stupid Home One keeps getting killed.  I have the Imperator down to about 6% hull, and the damn thing blows up, pisses me off.

You know, I could deal with professional games with those kind of graphics, as long as the content made use of the free time :D

Fun!
I keep having the same problem though. Either the Falcon or Home One dies, and there's not much I can do about it. 114 TIEs killed and Lando can't take a little evasive action? I thought those turrets on top of that hulk swiveled!
As for Home One...well...meh. The mission shouldn't just end right there...

It is damn fun though.

Yep it's way cool, just only if he had those ships textured it would be even better.  I can't wait for our SW conversion to be done, it's gonna be awesome.

this is really good for a freeware game but it doesnt come close to battle of endor on Star Wars Rogue Leader on Gamecube- now that is high-poly tense action, and if u buy Rebel Strike for Cube you can play the Rogue Leader campaign coop.

Wow, that's a fun game.

If you can't get the game to load (ie it keeps minimizing)
open 'config.ini' in the game's root, and set Videomode,0.

Then, in game, you can increase the resolution again. It worked for me.!

Cheers!

Awww ****.
212 TIEs and 3 Star Destroyers later, I'm about to crash myself into the bridge of the Executor and go out in a blaze of glory when Home One decides to throw in the towel and die. It couldn't have waited 5 seconds longer.

And I was about to win. :sigh:

Great game... if that is a close representation of the battle in the movie it is a miracle the alliance won the battle.

Too. Easy. :p

All I did was shoot torpedoes and quad fire laser blast (both = instant kill).

Still quite amusing though :D

I'd go find TIE fighter, but then I'd remember that TIE Fighter (as well as WC, for that matter) don't run on XP.

Screw them. All of them.

Here is the TRUE Arvel Crynyd! Spelling is not correct, he was the guy who smashed his A-wing to the Executor's bridge.

Post by: Dark_4ce on April 19, 2004, 03:55:48 pm
Ya know, I always figured that was an accident until someone told me it was intentional. I mean come on. Look at the poor guy, an xwing blows up behind him making him spin off and he's screaming away looking like he's not holding on to anything. However, I do prefer the fact that he did intentionally do it. Makes it more tragic.

And on Tie Fighter, I found my TIE CD. It didn't work. DAMN THEM!
*Fires up old laptop*
Aaah. There we go. :D

Wohoo! I got thru it! I crashed my X-wing into the bridge! :D
Thats a really fun game. I also changed the sparks in the game a little. Added a bit of a blue glow to them to make it a bit better. :D

Title: Freeware Battle of Endor
Post by: Tiara on April 20, 2004, 07:01:39 am
Heh, the cheat is really dumb :p

I made it through without the cheat (quite simple actually. The the Executor is a *****) but then I restarted and cheated just to see what kinda stuff you could do. Like crashing into shield generators on the SDs, or trying to fly towards the DS. :p
Title: Freeware Battle of Endor
Post by: Corsair on April 20, 2004, 08:32:18 am
What exactly is the cheat and when do you put it in? I saw that in the readme but I don't really feel like figuring it out on my own.

Fly towards the first wave of enemy fighters and crash into them untill you die. (the FORCE :p)

DON'T FIRE else it won't work.

I got to the end (the Executor), and tried to go under it, but couldn't figure out that I couldn't do that, so I died and used up my last two lives (the first time I tried to sit in the underbelly hangar, and the second I tried to go under one of the "wings"), thus making me lose the game :D

There were Star Destroyers at Yavin?

Those towers are a *****, especially when the Star Destroyer starts dumping TIEs on top of you in Stage 4. I can't figure out whether to go for the guns on the ground or the TIEs first...
Title: Freeware Battle of Endor
Post by: TopAce on April 27, 2004, 09:40:51 am
There shouldn't be any Star Destroyers in the Battle of Yavin. After the destruction of the DS, there was a whole fleet of Star Destroyers to attack Yavin IV.

According to canon information

I'm asking HOW I do that. Because I can't figure out how. There's not exactly a "turn off targeting computer" key in the list of controls.
