Hey FS2 Denizens!
I have done something my old man was never able to do [well]! I have textured that Shivan fighter found in one of Aldo's modeldumps. Daddy told me to give it a try, and here it is:

So, what do you think? Any comments are welcome!

pretty nice, good job :)
-
That looks cool!
It does look a touch large for a fighter, however... more akin to a bomber, unless it was specified as some kind of "heavy" Ares-type fighter.
-
Pretty nice. I like how it looks assymetrical (sp?) in perspective, but really isn't.
Something about the "wings" makes me think terran, though... in fact, on a second look the whole ship looks like a terran-shivan hybrid ship.

Excellent work. I can't see a single thing wrong with it, which is a pretty rare exception. You've captured the Shivan look very well, and I woulnd't have noticed if someone told me this was an orignal V ship.
-
pretty cool indeed :)
-
Wow, what a beauty!
-
*drool* :eek2:
Looks beautiful although..the maps look umm...cartoony? Not saying it's bad, but it reminds me of something....not sure what it is...looks great though!
-
More black, less gunmetal on the textures. Otherwise :yes2::yes::yes:
-
Crank up the contrast a tiny bit, and that'll look awesome with glowmaps :)
Nice looking ship, though I agree it looks a bit too big for a fighter :)
-
It looks a bit too terran to be shivan IMHO.
-
Right, make the grey a bit darker. Right now, it looks too metallic and therefore too Terran. Sorry, I first viewed the picture on my mom's monitor which is always too dark, so it lookd normal.
-
That's one hell of a fighter u have there. Good job.
-
Give it black armor and you'll have something that can scare the missiles off an Ares or the primaries off an Erynies.

It looks quite Shivan to me.
SF Dragon Mk II?
-
Hmm...Dragon MKII? Depends, how fast does that baby fly? At first glance, that thing brought to my mind "Basilisk." I'm not sure if that ship could be anything completely NEW on its own.
-
Anyway, I changed the gamma on that map, and it did look better darker. More menacing.
Below is an in-game screenshot of the fighter just moments before Rampage was killed by it.

Hey, how about a name?

Nice piccy! :)
SF Cetus?

Make it much darker. Eliminate the red on the base map, and leave it to the glowmaps to make the red shine. Give it massive speed, and very light armor, and you'll have yourself a winner.:yes2::)
-
You certainly spank your dad in that department.

Dude.. not everyone can have glowmaps running... :doubt:
glowmaps slow me down so bad

SF Vishnu
SF Brahma
SF Saraswathi :D

And thus, I have decided.
I shall name it [drumroll] - the SF Mantis.
We have the SF Scorpion, the SF Serpent, but I don't think we have a Mantis - yet.
By the way, the fighter is DONE. But I have struck a deal [hehehe] with Woomeister for a trade with this and some of Inferno's Shivan ships. [Nope, can't get the Gargant (spelling?).]

Hmm..now that you mention it, it does look like a mantis. Although, the first thing that pops into my head is "praying claws." But then staring at the "head" of that ship...it does kinda look like a mantis. Kinda. :D
-
Yummy, dude. :) Those textures pretty nice as well - I think those black lines could a tiny bit more definition, but otherwise, very, very, nice.

SF Claws? :p

Very nice work :) I'm impressed :)
-
Hey, we finally have a new Shivan fighter! Excellent work.
-
finally? There's like dozens of new shivan fighters :doubt:
-
(Yes yes, I know, but it's fun to see them here.)

Good choice of name.
I take it from your post that you are not publicly releasing this craft. Shame.:sigh:
-
As has been said, the grey makes it look kinda crappy, but the overall texture design is very nice. Try darkening the grey parts seperately, as opposed to reducing the gamma over the entire map.
-
I have to agree with everyone, that grey need to be nearly black, only a few shades lighter than true black
-
That looks awsome!!:nod::yes:
It looks to me like a Mara MK II

Don't care if an SF Mantis already exists or not. There are at least 2 Hercules Mark IIIs here at HLP. ;)
Regardless if you decide to give it Inferno, would you still release it?

At least you have something to shoot at. ;)

It rather makes me remember the Astaroth, if we try to find its predecessor from FS2.

Wasn't complaining or anything, he just sounded like it was the first one ever :p

I'm not going to give it to them. I'm going to trade it with them.
But if you want the fighter, then work for Attempted Suicides. Can you FRED?
-
That's is Freakin nice Shivan Fighter

Of course, my best skill is FRED.
But this fighter is not a needed asset in my life. To be honest, I downloaded only a few mods/models.
-
Looks great....I like the attention to the various views of the fighter and how you've managed to make it imposing in a 3 way view. Well done.
The maps need some work...more detail, more shading, that sort of thing. But its a winner!
-
Well, he just did the maps, the model is from Aldo.
-
There we go then :)
Great start on the maps but they need some work from the looks of it. Coming along tho!
-
I still think it's too symetrical and plated to be shivan but hey :p

Hmm... I see what you mean. But any more work is beyond my knowledge. I saw what LtNarol did to the Yali and the Naga (as directed to my father) and tried to imitate his mapping style. I make my maps in PaintShop Pro, by the way.
Maybe you would like a stab at it?

Love to but I can't at the moment with alot of other things keeping me busy (like exams and finishing the last of my assignments for university).
Paint Shop Pro does make some things much more difficult...about half the things you need to do at this point are much easier done in Photoshop (layer styles are unbelievably useful).
I would say to try and use the opacity controls on the various layers and try and blend some things together. The problem with most of the mapping is not in the detail but in the effects. Try duplicating your panel line layer (or layers) and dropping them underneath with alot more blur and more transparency.
I've done texturing, I'm not an expert, but I thought I would try and point it out and see if you can improve your technique. You're probably more of a natural than I :D
-
Lay-ers?
I only use them for setting opacity on decals :D
-

YIKES! The Drazi Sky Serpent and the Centauri Luxury Liner that I textured were both done with something like 40 layers including the layers for shading around the edges and the dirt layers (mostly cloud noise maps)...but I think I had maybe 4-6 layers for panel lines alone with some bevel and drop shadow options that Tomcat pointed out to me.
Works like a charm :D
Just takes a long time to do :D
-
I don't believe in using any of the inbuilt photoshop effects..... don't see the point - if I can do it myself, and can use my own eyes, why let a machine do it? and this way I'm not dependent on the graphics app ;)
The last model I did, i think I only used layers to do decals (for easy opacity setting), and an additional couple of layers to draw some shadows under machinery-type stuff.
-
I don't use layers atall :D
-

And its hard when we need you to change something :D :D :D
How would you achieve a beveled effect without the use of a layer option BTW? I think I know how but its a multistep process...clicking a button or two seems to be easier and more modular. I like the fact that you don't have to rely on the software but I just feel this seems efficient and powerful :D
I'm still obviously a total newbie at the process as I still feel a lack of confidence in doing what I want to do.

That's why you take twice the time I take to make maps :p
There's so many layers in my Ezechiel map I wouldn't dare counting them :p
So, to answer your question, another question: why would I waste my time on doing something by hand when photoshop can do the same in half a second? :p
-
using automated effects or not, layers is still helpful because it lets you tweak individual effects, colors, textures, etc without having to redo a whole section of the image every time. You can turn layers on and off so see how something looks, and even make several skins in the same file (clean, dirty, rusted, dented, etc)
Sooooo many advantages to using layers, even if you don't use plugin effects :)
-
Rampage, great texture job on this. :) I think it's excellent work and if it's at the limit of your ability, my commendation to you for pushing yourself that far. Keep taking on new work and fiddling around with stuff you've never tried before, and I foresee an even brighter future for you and modding. ;)

Because that way you don't need to use photoshop if it's not available?
EDIt - anyways, my maps look totally different to yours, so you can;t really compare them.
-
Looks damned cool. That ship looks like the Shivans took a hard look at the GTF Perseus, and repurposed its design. I tend to find Shivan ships that (vaguely, or perhaps by a stretch of the imagination) resemble Terran ships to be...disturbing, in a cool way.
-
It's just a shame FS doesn't let you fly Shivan ships... that would be cool :)
-
It's only a table hack... you can fly them.
-
I leave the hacks to those who know how
I didn't even think FS2 included the proper graphics for ship selection and etc to use the Shivan ships anyway
-
Well.........it did for the Mara...lol...i suppose people could make more graphics and then make more flyable shivan ships...i mean, hell, just for the fun of it I once made a flyable GTCv Deimos, of course, i couldn't fire or aim at anything, but it was fun driving it repeatedly into a sathanas that I placed in the test mission I drove the Deimos around in...lol...

after 4 or 5 years of FS modding, you really bealieve that you're the first one to have that idea, and that nobody already did it? :p
Aldo: if photoshop is not available, that means I'm not on my PC, so I won't do maps anyway :p
And the looks have nothing to do there, I can make the same kind of maps as you with layers, I would have sweared you used only layer effects until you said otherwise, in fact, to be honest :p

Psssst. He still doesn't know much about FS Modding. You should have been friendlier with him. :)
-
Reminds me of a Mara, mixed with a Pegasus (or is it the persius?(sp) the interceptor?), and with a hint of that FS1 fighter....the Apollo?
-
The Perseus better takes after the SF Mantis.

I wasn't mean, I was friendily ironical, nuance :D

He's just being Venom...I mean Nico...or whatever you changed your name to :D
-
Any of my textures or images has an enourmous amount of layers - they're sooo damn useful little buggers. :D
Of course, I could do it without them, but that would take literally ages, be unflexible, and probably look worse (cause i'd get frustrated)
