Alright you lazy arses..
I'll quote it..
Quote
Malkovich in Hitch-hiker's Guide

John Malkovich will appear in the eagerly-awaited movie adaptation of Douglas Adams's cult novel The Hitch-hiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

He'll play religious cult leader Humma Kavula in the movie that first-time director Garth Jennings starts shooting in London this month.

Malkovich is joining Mos Def (Ford Prefect), Zooey Deschanel (Trillion), Sam Rockwell (Zaphod) and Martin Freeman (Arthur Dent).

Malkovich's character was especially created for the film by author Douglas Adams, reports Reuters.

The novel was adapted for the screen by Adams but after his death in 2001, Chicken Run screenplay scribe Karey Kirkpatrick rewrote it before Robert Ben Garant, the writer of upcoming Taxi, came on board.

Please tell me you've read at least one of the books?

They have, I think it's more a question of John Who?

I've heard of him, he's a fair enough actor, and it'll be nice to see an adaptation of the HHGTTG, but I'm a bit concerned about the number of 'rewrites' it's been through before it hits the theatre :)

Live? I would have done it CG, for so, so many reasons.

But still, good news. Malkovich is a pretenious bastard, but at least the film is shooting. I've been re-reading the books in the past few days, mostly 'cause all my other books are in storage.

Hooray.

Wasn't there already an HHGTTG movie?

Fear the salmon of doubt... :p

As much as I love John Malkovich, this merely presages the horrible horrible things that are going to be done to this script. Adding characters? What, there weren't enough great, quirky, utterly excellent characters?

What next? will the potted plant and the whale get a third little buddy to set up a comic triad?

How spine-tinglingly appropriate that the actor with the most boring name gets to play Arthur Dent.

wait....since when is Ford black? It never explicitly says he's not AFAIK, but I just, well, assumed..

Ford: Should be white. That's your head-nod to being ethnically correct. Bummer.
Trillion: Looks hot, never heard of her though.
Zaphod: Looks the part. He'd better have two heads.
Arthur: Also looks the part, and it seems he had a part in The Office (a cult comedy here in the UK) so he can't be all bad.

Overall I'm blindly optimistic. We'll know when we know.

Thats just what I would have said had I been inclined to say it. Except for Zaphod, couldn't find any pics of him, though I didn't look very hard (Google image search).

Arthur and Trillian especially look the part.

Though I wonder how they'll handle the narration. A huge part of the humour is in the narration, so if they only do character lines then it would be a significantly lesser experience.

I thought her name was spelled Trillian...

Well, it (the character) was created by Adams, winnit?  So there's presumably a good reason for it.......

Yes, but it was a BBC thing, I believe.

The salmon of doubt huh?
Now that was an interesting piece of work...

they couldn't make a movie of THHGTTG, alot of it is what any given character is thinking. the whale, for instance, in a movie, he would just appear, then fall and hit the ground, nothing more.

'xactly. Though I think you could just do the whole narration in voice overs and still have it be good. Sure, its not conventional, but then again the book isn't very conventional. As long as they get John Cleese to narrate it.

I don't know what's scarier.. a Hitchiker's movie or a remake of Flash Gordon...

A remake of Flash Gordon is scarier. A Hitchhiker's Guide movie at least has the possibilty of being good, being that its not handicapped by horrid material like the Flash Gordon movie is.

Mik. You really need a job. You're turning into a real sourpuss. :D

How can you not like Flash Gordon. Yeah it's silly but it's meant to be silly.

All Boring White Males in film comedies are required to have Sassy Black Sidekicks. It's, like, a law or something.

Multipass, please.

I can't help but dig the 1980's-ish Flash Gordon movie.

Yes, bad acting, campy effects, blah blah.   I get a kick out of a comic book made into a live action movie that is still, essentially, a comic book :).

Besides, it's got one of me favorite quotes in it.

Zarkov: Why do you attack us?  We are only interested in friendship.  Why do you attack us?
Ming: Why not?
