I thought you'd all like to see these:

File: (will need 3ds max 5 or later, and not GMax [I think...])
http://swooh.com/peon/hippo/longsword.3ds <<< Right-click, save as. [LINK CHANGED][LINK CHANGED AGAIN]
Just to clear stuff up, I did NOT make this... I only coaxed it out of Halo PC... I also have the textures if anyone wants to give it a shot... The mapping there is on the model itself is horrid...
I've got every model from the game (except the PoA, which is scenery, and can't be removed... :( ) And I have textures to go along with them... And by every model, I mean, from this Longsword, to Keyes, to a Pistol, to Halo, to the debris of Halo, to the lifepods, to everything else...
So if anyone wants one, just ask... :p
Heres the thread that convinced me to put something here:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,20375.0.html ... So kudos for them for making their own... I am simply converting stuff...
-
coooool.
-
more detail on the virtical fin thingy
and it isn't exactly a 'long' sword
-
more detail on the virtical fin thingy
I did NOT make this
Thats exactly how it is in game... there is a texture that gives it more detail, but its kindof weird...
-
You put it up on swooh...
Die.
Btw- Me wants the Tn'R. ;7
-
Maybe the "Gladius" or the "Dagger" or the "Blade," its too short for "Longsword" I was expecting something really sleek with the cockpit set near the back and details stretched lengthwise when i saw "Longsword." I really need to learn how to model
-
Damn, yes this is what I was asking KT for. Now if someone would just texture this baby, and get a pillar of autumn, i could go for a little halo mod.
-
it's neat looking, but i would make the tops of the wings smooth instead of two polys.

It's from Halo. They made up the name. Two years ago. Hippo had nothing to do with naming the ship, or even making it. Beside, the name works anyway.

Er Hippo, the link doesn't work...
You forgot to include the 'n' in 'Longsword'
Suggest you edit the link:nod:

I think it looks great. Always liked the look of the forward swept wings... and besides, we're in space, so why not. :D

The funny thing is, there's one of these that flies above the Planet express building in 'The Farnsworth Paradox' And since I thought it was cool looking, I tried to model it. And failed miserably. Excellent work, Hippo.

Tn'R?
Unfortunately, the PoA is the ONLY model i can't get out, since it is purely scenery... Maybe if i learn how to extract scenery, i'll be able to, but i can't... :(
Here's the textures: They are in .dds frmat, though max (6 at least) seems to open them... [NEED WINRAR (www.rarsoft.com)]
http://swooh.com/peon/hippo/LStextures.rar
Here's a program that can convert the .dds files to JPG, BMP, PNG, and TGA, but it doesn't run on w2k... there are other versions, and if i get one working, i'll upload things in TGA from now on...
[NEED WINZIP (www.winzip.com)]

Anyone have any requests? :p

I never linked the pictures of the cockpit:

-
what program did you use to extrat the modles/texutes hippo?
-
A whole bunch:
Starting with Halo PC, you need WinRar to pull the maps from the .cab files (unless you do a full install)... Then you need a program caled Halo Map Tools (HMT) (v3.0 or later, since only new versions have extraction utilities), 3D Exploration (3DX) to convert the files from .obj (Lightwave object file IIRC) to a .3ds mesh, and then you need 3DSMax (any version i'd suppose, though i use 6) to import the new object.
I'm not sure where to get 3DX, since it supposedly costs $300, and there aren't many places you can find the beta version.
HMT can be found at Halomods.com
Winrar is at www.rarsoft.com
Any you need the full version of HPC, since the demo doesn't have single player maps in .map form, and ripped copies won't do, since HMT needs the patched version of HPC to work...

For what its worth, Max should have an importer for .obj files. They're pretty much the standard 'tween' format these days. Everything reads .obj.

but it doesn't... odd...

The Truth and Reconciliation is a part of some levels too, that doesn't count?
Btw, one could wonder why Halo2 is subtitled Truth and Reconciliations...

Someone should model it... Also.. get the PoA out for us too! :D

Hate to sound negative, but that's a rmarkably crap looking bomber for a professional model.

Nope, haven't read the books, just a wild guess based on the game events.
As for the T n R, I'm positive you see the complete ship in 3D in some level ( the one when you start dropped from a Pelican and try and board the ship for the first time ).
-
I'm not knocking the quality of stuff on here but it's worrying when it's so much better than the stuff made by a professional because pretty much everyone on this board is an amateur.
Hell much as I like the Pillar of Autumn's design I found it rather simplistic.
-
To be fair, the beauty of the PoA is its simplicity - it's a big hexagon, which actually helps make it look big and imposing. Something more complex, and the detail can detract from the overall model.

Ok, I popped open the map in a program that can view (and only view :( ) the maps and grabbed some screens of it...
That what you mean? Well, thats scenery too, but when i figure it out, i can probably pull that too...

First it was missing a letter, now the letters are in the wrong places... Doh!...
I know you're doing the PoA, I'm just making the exact models available... There were MANY UNSC frigate and destroyer configurations, and if anything will ever happen with them, we'll need a bunch of different types...

err.. I'm not saying saying don't try to get it out of the game. Just reannouncing my creative genius. :)

Gonna have to do some research on how long it really is... Supposedly, about 1.2K...

Check the book "The Fall of Reach", Im sure it has its length in there, but I cant be arsed to check.
-
yeah, thats the exact book i'm looking through... The Iriquois (keyes' ship when he was a commander) was exactly 1.2k, and seven meters longer then standard cruisers...
Does anyone else see the potential for a large scale mod here?
I also have a half of the TnR, strait from a50_terrain, but it needs to be completed...
I also have the crashed PoA too, but there isn't much of a difference, other then the deformed bridge and antennas... (most was done with textures)
I haven't checked Keyes (the level) for a model yet...

Except the bit at the end has you covering a distance of about 4 or 5km.
-
that part in itself was messed up... in the physical files, the fighterbay is DIRECTLY above the cryo bay (in a10), but moves to 4k away in d40... that means, you had to land at the escape pod bays that you go by in a10, go to the bridge, back to the cryo bay (which is near/ next to the escape pod bay you came in on), to engineering (which in theory would be at the end of the ship... meaning you've already walked the length of the ship (almost) then you have to drive 2.5K to the evac point, and an additional 2k to the fighter, which will put you directly above where you started (in theory)... that point is the single BIGGEST flaw in Halo, and it can't be explained...
-
yeah that part of the game confused me :-/
if you look at the windows of the bridge ( where you stand at points ) and just size up the ship from that, its no way 4-5km long. just for game purposes i guess
-

well...
technically the bridge in the extracted version is too big, since all the bridge-related cutscenes take place in a full model of the PoA (the one extracted)... scale doesn't have to be right on there points... I'll see if i can yank the in-game bridge and prow...
-
You have to remember that in the game files (A10 for example) its a matter of conveniance to the mapper where things are placed, although The Maw gives you a fairly accurate showing of the ship, A10 (the POA) does not need to be, as you dont see the fighterbay except within a cutscene (the big ass hanger with pelicans etc).

True, but it does make a bit more sense, since the books say Covie Destroyers are about 3k long, and that they dwarf UNSC crusiers... Aslo, you can get an approximate sacle, since the TnR was holding position approx 300 meters above the rings surface, which you can physically measure, and compare to the TnR there, which you can compare to the true size of the prow of the PoA as seen is a10_b (which curiously enough, intersects the hanger, which does imply that the hanger could be somewhere else) and take the a10_b measurement and compare that to a10_space and/or d40_exterior...
Though that brings up another question; if the hanger is indeed in another place, then it is safe to assume that External Access Junction 4C is topside, probably about at the midpoint.... but from there on, the nav point is indesputably strait ahead (other then the turns and such, like near the nipple grunt), but that puts the hanger on either the front, or back of the ship... infortuneately, d40_h offers nothing to help us, but d40_terrain does: The longsword is exiting on the starbord side, at a midpoint on the ship, which would imply that you were driving sideways that whole time, which is moot...
So i think we should stick with whatever the books say, and scale accordingly...
*breathes*
-
You're wondering too much: they just didn't give a damn about scale, and that's it. You could also notice that the top of the PoA is not opened, but according to that last mission, it should have a bigass trench running all along its spine. One thing: They didn't care, and that's it, they wanted a long warthog run in the end, and that's what they did. If you ask me, it was poorly done and I didn't like it, but, heh, that's just me.
-
well, at the top of the model, there is a texture that corresponds with the first three open to air 'rooms'... though, i agree with you in that the warthod run is out of place... if it were OUTSIDE the ship (or even alongside) racing twards E419, it'd fit better...
Also, there is a weird column runing through the center of the model:
And hidden BEHIND the fuel cells (I'd assume, the things on the side with the rounded front), there is a perfectly square hole, running through that column above, and out the other side... had to be intentional, since most moddelers wouldn't look over something that big...
-
Dare I get involved in another project, but I must say, I'd be all for leading/storylining and or FREDing for a Halo mod if you guys are up for it.
-
you know that POA looks like it'd be just about perfict for FSO, could use a bit of very shallow greebleing on the big flat parts

*shrug* Some people think that "The Library" where you're going through room after room smashing the Flood is the most frustrating part of Halo, I think it's the last mission.
-
I hated the library, it never ended :blah:
but I do like the warthog run at the end, it's much more enjoyable if you just turn off your brain for a few minutes.

Imagine if Microsoft released that map, and created a multiplayer race out of the entire thing. Hell YEAH that would be fun!!

lol starting to sound like star trek fans, wanting exact blueprints of all these fictional ships :p lol
but yeh, a FS2 mod would be pretty kewl, I wouldnt mind helpin out wif that a bit :)
Though there does seem to be a lack of fighter / bomber craft, and know specifics in Covenant fighters / bombers etc as far as I know... but yeh bit of artistic license would be usefull there... :D

you dont need microsoft to release it, just extract it from the level and convert it into multiplay. People dont realize that they have all the tools they need to Mod halo, they just are to dumb to get off their asses and work on it. We dont need that goddam HEK....
-
So... where can we DL the PoA?

Hippooooo!!!!

:p... if you want it now, you can have it... Its a 3ds mesh, not alligned to any vertecies, and textureless...
If you really want it now, then you can have it...
EDIT:
Link removed untill i check out legalities... It should be back soon...

Is not illigal to use extracted models as long as you are not sellign them on or making cash from them.
Thats AFAIK anywayz/

This can be done already with the tools we have.

Well, actually, it is. Some societies/people don't ming ( comapny games, usually, don't mind ), but in some other cases, they'll go to great ends in that regard ( a great exmple, Alien quake, 20th century forced the developpers to give up coz they were using scanned shots as textures on the meshes, for exemple, or Starwars Doom, which waqs even worse, they made all the art from scratch, but they didn't have the license :doubt: ).
-
I already checked legalities, and the only two clauses that MS has in the EULA were voided when they gave Grenadiac (Halo Modder) the source to the map files, and then declared HMT open source... Check the SG FS forum for details...
-
SParkedit and HMT were NOT created by Microsoft.
M$ did not give the source to the map files either.
Sparkedit was created by Grenadiac, HMT was created by MonoxideC.
The offsets (for hexediting, and forms the basis of both programs) list was made by Ironforge.
These guys (and a few others but ive forgotten their name) enabled us to mod Halo xbox & PC, NOT M$.
M$ is yet to release the HEK (Halo Editing Kit) which the community has been waiting for the past 6 months.
-
So, basically, as long as Hippo doesn't try to make any money from the Mod, it should be ok to do?
-
Extract all the models, the Hog, Scorpy, Wraith, everything, and make them pilotable in FS2. Imagine a wing of hogs flying around taking on a wing of ghosts lolz.
I am bored, if you can't tell.
-
So, basically, as long as Hippo doesn't try to make any money from the Mod, it should be ok to do?
AFAIK yes. Dont quote me on that tho.
A mod for FS2 could be possible, but would require a whole lot of reading the books to get the look of the ships.
There are plenty of cruisers etc, only two fighters tho.
EDIT: Oh and the Pelican can fly in space, but it only has a 70mm chaingun.

Hm... my mistake about MS then...
THe pelican got confusing in the books; like you can fit 75 kids and some adults in the back, and there must be a space-rated door that can close over the cargo bay...
Not to mention that in First Strike, they landed in the longsword, and then refferd to the pelican...
EDIT: Reppy, I see you got your name on HBO's news page yesterday :p ...

Yea the books have quite a few errors in thim which are annoying, but still readable.
Im /guessing/ the pelican can be expanded somewhat, as the one in game can hold 10 marines in seats, possibly 3-4 standing, and maybe one or two in the cockpit(sp?). If ya look around the edge of the bay, it looks like there are slots or summut there, possibly expanding its space over where vehicles are held.
Hell I dunno thats a guess.
Ive been on HBO a couple of time, only from reporting some new maps/progs. ;7
Im also a moderator over at the Gearbox Software forums (the guys who ported Halo to PC) ;)
-
Now, I haven't read the books here or anything, but the 75 person passenger thing seems kinda stupid for a pelician. On the otherhand, the Longsword could more than likely fit 75 people in it. Look at the size of the bloody thing. In the oppening cutsecene you get a good idea on how huge that thing is.
And, as the pelican carrying weaponry.... ummm, where did you get that little tidbit. I dont ever rember it in the game, and if it could carry guns, you think that the two of them would have on the Silent Cartographer level, and that Foe Hammer would have in the laast mission.
-
In the books the Pelicans had 70mm chainguns, but they had ran out of ammo, and were unable to recover any from the POA`s crash site.
The 75 person part I dotn remember, Ill guess I have to re-read that part, but it may have not been a pelican, or at least an over sized one made for troop transport.
-
I'd guess the 75 person thing would be about the SPARTAN II kids.. but if you remember, they were supposedly packed in there pretty good (they'd have to be). And the Pelican was supposed to have rocket mounts too..
-

True... Its mentioned when they drop off the kids and they have to reach an evac point, and John gives Deja control of the other pelican, and he's made squad leader...
In the books, they did use the chaingun in the Silent Cartographer, where FoeHammer chases an elite up the beach, and is rewarded with him disappearing into a cloud of sand...
-
I'd like to know where they'd stick the gunmounts on the Pelican, because in the game, there dosen't really apear to be anywhere on the bird that could effectively mount a chaingun, much less a rocket launcher and still make an effective landing craft.
-
goddamit hippo wheres the damn modle already
-

That doesn't really make sense. If they could find +200 people, guns for all of them, rocket launchers, jeeps, tanks, not to mention ammo for all of those, AND flying craft, how could they not find ANY 70MM ammo?
-
what? no... the pelicans left when the PoA was entereing the rings atmospehere... everyone left ON the ship dies when it crashed, but the covenant soon took over the ship... when the flood showed up, they took over the ship to, but hadn't gotten into the engine room, or vehicle storage rooms... a marine strike force from Alpha Base (a captured forerunner facility on the surface of halo) was dropped off outside the PoA near dawn by some of the pelicans... The strike force got into the ship, secured, and locked down the storage areas, and plundered the area, anld loading 50MM autocannons from the Autumns armament into pelicans to be set up on Alpha Base... The Pelicans then ferried in drivers and gunners, and marines loaded every bit of ammo onto trailers or into the pelicans to stock Alpha Baes... They were unable to recover any of the ammo for the pelicans chaingun, or any missiles, but took their prizes: some 45 warthogs with trailers full of suplies, 4 Scorpion Main Battle Tanks, and all the food they'd need to survive a long time...
As for the model, its in no way a useable model, and it will take a lot of work to make it one... it has no weapons, is about the size of a countermeasure, isn't pointed in the general direction of strait ahead, the textures, while extracted, are unuseable as is, since everything is stuffed onto each tile in different sizes... The other thing is, if there's any hope of a Halo to FreeSpace mod (using the SCP), as i hope to start (see sectorgame), it would be kindof depressing to see people using the model already, if it could be included in a campaign... It would be if the SWC released EVERY ship we've finished, and then put out a campaign and missions last, after everyone's already come up with their own, it just makes the whole point of people working on it pointless...
-
As far as I remember where the ammo was stored were they couldent reach in the POA, as it was either blocked by Covies or inaccessable somehow, again you would have to refer to the book for this.
-
I would, If i hadn't lent all three books to someone... He's finished The Flood and First Strike (since he read them all backwards, since thats the order i found them) so i can probably check them tomorrow...
-
On a completely unrelated note: Ts6 can load and save textures as dds. Joy! :D
-
so can Max 6... hencely, i have them as bitmap, but they are still in a state of disorder...
-
Yeah. There's no way to save the UV Mapping?
-
In the xbox verson you were able to get te uvmapping alreay done in models, such as the cheif and the warthog, this is not possible in the PC version.
AFAIK there is no way to extract the POA with UVmapping, I dont think sparkedit can do this.
-
hm... /me thinks a Mapper needs be found
-
Dont you mean a texturer? or UVMapper?
Anywayz, Im giving it a go tomorrow, I dont have the time tonight.
The POA consists of about 6 textures, not including the bumpmaps and glowmaps.
-
How od you extract from the xbox version? I have the XBox disk, and a dvd drive... what else would I need?
-
an xobx, and probably a mod chip
EDIT: it can be done without a chip, but either way, you'll need a whole lot of programs...
-
Oh.
well scrap that idea. ;)
-
thoguh, what happens when you put an xbox dvd in a computer dvd drice? anything?
-
I'll see. Hold on for a while.

Head to the sectorgame FreeSpace forum (www.sectorgame.com) and see about joining... If i can find a decent modeler and UVMapper (though Reppy may be interested in UV methinks) i'll do a little work in getting this thing some hosting at SG, (or i'll just defunct the AHTW forums and make them for this)...
-
Oh. I put the XBox dvd in, and.. well...
Remember how if you put a Dreamcast CD in a cd player, it's play an audio file saying it was a Dreamcast disk? Well, this one plays a video file saying it's an Xbox disk. :p
-
Is it in a voice similar to the dreamcast one? I accidently left that looping for an hour when i left my house, thinking it wouldn't play... :p
-
*Big bump*
Um, yeah, so has anything been done with this?
-
yes, but not much... I'd hoped that the sumer would give me more time to work on it, and it has, but not as much... I'm still looking for some deticated staffers, including people who can create POF's good, and texture things good...
-
...So wait. You can extract HALO Xbox models without having to get a mod chip? Because I'd be willing to try. If they come textured and UV Mapped.
-
I will be using it for my Completly Cryptic Conversion Project, or CCCP. Reskinned, of course.
It's a total conversion for FS2 that I decided to do as a practice while I write my sci-fi novel and Red Tide demo campaign mission scripts.

Apparently you can access your xbox via FTP when it is connected to your computer through an ethernet card... How exactly this can be done is beyond me, but people at forum.halomods.com (or just halomods.com) could tell you...

:wtf: Are you somekind of closet Commie? The subliminal messaging there is horrendous.
-
LOL... I don't think it was intentional...
Besides that, on the consumer market Microsoft seems to be a bit more relaxed, so it's unlikely that there will be problems as long as you give proper credits and copyrights around...
Don't take this for certain, as it's somewhat based on personal experience... *needs to hook with someone at MS entertainment*

I am smacking you over the head with it. That's no subluminal message.:p
Yes, CCCP will feature - SUPRISE! - CCCP. AMAZING, isn't it? Who would have thought?
The title is: "Commies in SPAAAACE!", and will feature more "For the Mother Russia, comrade!", red stars and commisars than you can shake a stick at.
