How many people remember this?
Well, Taking a break from the Aeolus, I went back to this ship and have begun smoothing it, the main complaint I got.
So far I've done the bow and stern sections, and the four 'fins'.

Better/Worse?
-
Much nicer :)
-
Sobek Retrofit? :wtf:
-
that's a lot better. It does look a bit, well, 13 a dozen.
-
old one =
new one =
-
Looks good
-
not bad, but I think that the original sucked because of those too large sections mapped with a tiled texture.
You have to break those areas, either in the model or the textures. Maybe you could take inspiration from the bridge area
nice work so far btw
-
Yes! People approve of my first attempt at a Vasudan craft!:D
@Stealth[cro]:No, no, this is a third gen cruiser, with a simular role to the Aeolus (Anti-fighter/bomber, fast and nimble anti-crusier platform)
@Kasperl::confused:comment not compute. Please re-state
@KARMA:Thanks for the input, I'll see about that. I may UVmap it like a fighter/bomber, not sure ATM:doubt:

I think he means that the design is a bit too common. :) I agree. Nevertheless a nice ship indeed.
-
Or like it ate a baker's dozen pies... I didn't like the first, and I don't like this one, but I appreciate the work you put into it.
-
The idea is fine, but there are three problems from my perspective. 1) it looks much too similar to the Sobek. If you're making a new design, making it look like the old one isn't much use, and since you have more unbroken expanses on your model it will look worse when textured than the plain old Sobek. 2) it lacks a distinct edge. All vasudan ships have them, in one form or another. You should have a distinct "top" and "bottom" from geometry alone, and right now there isn't any distinguishing feature about any side other than the (ultimately trivial) bridge cutout. 3) it's too big for a cruiser (which can of course be fixed by providing suitable textures of appropriate scale) just looking at the geometry. And I still can't get the lateral stripes that the original has around its neck out of my interpretation of the mesh; that texture was never, NEVER meant to be used that way. As Raa said, I can appreciate the work, but I don't particularly like the end result.
-
I hate to say it, but it just looks like a giant missile.
-
buck rodgers in the 24th and 1/2 century
I'm going to be totaly honest, it's ass ugly
-
Make it into a cruise missile, that's the only thing I can see it being.
And all these recemt things that look like a you-know-what makes me wonder if modders are just trying to get people banned for mentioning it. :doubt:
-
Maybe a smaller Hatshetsput (SP?) version, more maneuverable, but less powerful

It's a Dutch saying. Normally, 12 go into a dozen, but if it looks very common, no-one will notice the 13'th one.
as other said, it needs more details and a more distinctive edge.

1)Well, since I consider the Sobek to be the best looking Vasudan capship around, is really suprising that this resembles that?
Besides, It's still a WIP, the old shot was a rough WIP.
2)you may be right, though from the side the bow has one, makes it look like two clam shells joined together.
3)Well, sorry about the early textured version, but I didn'y have much choice about how the textures were alined. Besides, I kinda liked the bands...:nervous:
I'll see about making a more noticeable Dorsal/Ventral divide.
@Bobboau: Well, thats your opinion. I thought that that destroyer you posted in the 'Design A Destroyer' thread was ugly as hell, but I didn't say anything at the time, since I couldn't think of anything constructive (it reminded me too much of...dare I say it...Mr Blobby!:shaking: ). You're just gone out and insluted my attempt with saying why you think it's ugly.
end rant
-
A vast improvement. I like it. :) I do think it's very, very similar to the Sobek and I'd love to see you put out something more original, but this is an important step in your growth as a modeler. Well done!
-
Honestly, it looks like a Sobek than went on a binge-and-purge without the purging.

Thanks Setekh, that post has really helped boost my faith of HLP.
New screenies, with comparasions with the Sobek and Mentu.

In those last two you can see the two/four slots I've added in an atempt at breaking up the large surface areas. It's also narrower and flatter than before.
I feel that I should mention something about where this design is rooted from. I see this as a cruiser that the Vasudans made with Terran help, since, IMHO, the Vasudans could never get a cruiser class right, while the Terrans do a good job every time.
Something along those lines, anyway.;)
Sesquipedalian, that's just, gross.:ick:

"saying why you think it's ugly"
"buck rodgers in the 24th and 1/2 century"
I think it's cluncky (in the bad way) the geometry is poorly constructed, the shapes are disproprotinate, and it doesn't have any sort of smooth shape to it, in short it's extreemly ugly.
if you don't like something of mine, say it, people only saying nice things about stuff that is made is bull, it only leads to further bad stuff beeing made. I have a history of speaking my mind so that if I say I like something you'll know I'm not just 'being nice'.
the idea behind that one destroyer BTW was to make something big fat and ugly, so I guess it worked out the way I intended.

No prob Raptor, I'm just calling it as it is. Keep it up, I'm really looking forward to seeing this cruiser finished! :)
-
At least I have ONE supporter...
I have to admit, I'm happy with how it looks now, but on the other hand, I'm not sure that there isn't something missing...:doubt:
Anyone have any suggestions? Bear in mind this cruiser has a (slighty) mixed heritage.;)
-
I like it, although I think it is kind of small.
-
It's too... straight? Curve it more. Look at the side profile, that ship is more like an arrow than a Vas ship.
-
Personally I believe it would make a great heavy corvette. Love the design and all, just it's use would be better suited to a corvette.
-
Vasudan Gunship, rather than a cruiser perhaps. Also, if you gave it big, fancy looking turrets, that might help a bit with the detailing.
-
I think that you need a lot more detail on its underbelly. At the moment its a bit sparse.
You also need something radical that will distinguish the model much more from a Sobek or missile. I'm not sure what the something is but it needs it ;)
-
Those fins in the back are waa-aaa-aaay too small. That's why when I look at it, I think '1950's crappy sci-fi movie' or 'Estes Model Rocket'.
As it is, it's too front heavy. Balance it out a little more, give it an edge somewhere (Or texturing will be a nightmare), and take it from there.
Was I helpful at all? what do you mean no?! *sigh* fine...
-
The model dosn't suit it being a cruiser, I hate to say it.

Yes, actualy, that is helpful.
I'll see about doing something on the ventral side of the tail, plus whip up a few turrets;)
-
Well, that didn't take long:D
I've done some editing to the mesh, not yet smoothed, and added a half-dozen (crude) turrets. Their based off the Typhon's MPTs.
For the moment, it only has 6 pulse turrets. A much larger version will sit in front of the dorsal fin, and small gunports will line the flanks.
The notch in nose is for the main anti-warship beam.
I did away with the ventral fin, and instead brought it's start point forward and kinda made a 'intake'. It will be a LOT smoother when it's done.
The side fins are much larger now.
Hmmm, I think this will be a 'Light Cruiser' type ship, fighter-bomber suppresion like the Aeolus. Not tough, but fast.
-
Hey hey, that's starting to transform. The profile looks much better now - cool. :)
I'm still slightly hesitant on the front subsection - I was thinking maybe add some ridges to that part of the design to distinguish it some more? Up to you.
-
Very nice. Much improved. Keep at it :)
-
I think its lacking something that most Vausdan designs have and that is a general attempt to sweep the ship forward and then down.
The Sobek has only a little bit of that at the nose (and its more of an impression), the Hapshepsut has it, the Typhon to a sort of extent has it (the highest ridge being further back and sweeping into a spit bow), etc. etc.
