Title: Delicous, delicous sovereignty
Post by: Rictor on April 23, 2004, 10:59:37 am
Oh, they'll have sovereignty all right, just not the power to, you know, change any actual laws... (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/04/23/politics/23DIPL.html?ex=1083690196&ei=1&en=b5e18beeca5428ce)

I've got two debate threads going, this was only meant as a "hey look at this "news"" thread. Or discuss, whatever.

From the article, though not strictly on topic:

Quote
Mr. Grossman was also asked what would happen if the new government wanted to adopt a foreign policy opposed by the United States, such as forging close relations with two neighbors, Iran and Syria.

The United States, he replied, would have to use the kind of persuasion used by any American ambassador in any country.

Of course they wont have any real power - this'll be an interim government - once the Iraquis elect their own representetive government, it'll have full power of any democratically elected government - in theory anyway. No doubt they'll be a democratically elected bunch of US bootlickers, but, well, yeah.

Support of militias, terrorists, blocking of aid, et al? Ye that'd do it. :sigh:
