I was wondering how may people here like to play RPG style games? I am asking due to i play an online text based RPG that is in need of a larger player base.
Anyone that thinks that this may be interesting can get more details from the Continents (http://www.continents.cx/) Mud web site.
I myself have been playing for about half a year, and find the game quite different and enjoyable.
-
I must admit to dabbling in the beardy side of things...though I insist on that being my best friends fault. At any rate it started with the text based tame with a funky GUI called "Nightmist" and is now at Neverwinter Nights... which I reinstalled two days ago and am playing through again now.
-
Neverwinter is Teh King, Babay!
With all the tilesets and a fairly faithful implementation of D&D 3.x(you pick) it's liable to stay there for a while, specially since it makes Evercrack's graphics look pathetic by comparison.
I working my way through the Hordes of the Underdark and parts of it suck. I mean it's great overall, but my 18 Sorcerer/3 Dragon Disciple is stuck where her magic won't work and is getting owned by giant spiders, I mean WTF?

RPGs? Chrono Trigger is all I swear by. Though Pokemon was surprisingly enjoyable... :nervous:
...and on a slightly pertinent rant, why is it that people seem to want to put apostrophes to indicate plurals of things like RPG's, 100's, and DVD's? I thought apostrophes had two uses - either as an abbreviation for a single letter (e.g. wasn't, I'm), or to indicate the possessive (e.g. Kalfireth's). Am I going nuts or is this really just bad grammar? :p

actually, i IRC roleplay at times.. but as far as RPGs go... well. as far as single player goes.. kotor all the way..;)
as far as RPG elements go, i was dissapointed with deus ex2, the biomod system was too restrictive to my mind.

I finished Chrono Trigger again yesterday for the "insert-large-number-here" time.
Awesome game.
Yes, I play RPG's, one of my favourite genres :)

I cast... Magic Missile!

I like the so called "console RPG's" quite a lot but NwN is also something I play quite often.
Text based RPG's I haven't tried

What ticks me off more is people going 'an RPG', when the indefinite article should be 'a'.

What ticks me off is people who don't understand the rules of their own language.
Here's a hint: The whole reason for the a/an dichotomy is to ease pronunciation. "An" always precedes vowel sounds, so you don't have two vowels slurring into each other. Thus--
"An RPG".
"A role-playing game".

Some people use an apostrophe to seperate the pluralising morpheme from a acronyms. This is especially useful in cases where you have mixed case acronym. Merely tacking it on could result in the pluralising morpheme being construed, incorrectly, as part of the acronym.
On the other hand, it could be that with acronyms and other such non-linguistic contructs (letters: which implies more than one letter 'a'? "As" or "A's"?), the normal pluralising rules don't quite fit visually.
Of course, I could be a nong.

i like to not RPG

I started on ct emulated on my dc a while back. also started on grandia 2 on said dreamcast. also started on shenmue 2 on said dreamcast a while ago. also, I've thought about getting the expansions for nwn for quite some time.

Heh, last time I played an RPG we all ended up in RavenLoft or whatever it was called. It was actually quite a laugh to be honest :D
I used to play Muds on bulletin boards years ago, they were pretty good actually, but I tend to find that they can only hold my interest for a few days and then I just start getting frustrated :(
-
Anyone remember an old thread (either at the VBB or VWBB) set at a bar or something? And everyone kept on killing each other?

He needs Kazan's title. :D
Anyway, I play RPGs a lot, and I have been playing pen&paper RPGs too for a while.
Nomination for the best RPG ever would have to go to AmberMoon, and the Eye Of The Beholder series :)
As for newer games, the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series have been pretty good. And if youre looking for something quite unconventional, I can recommend Planescape Torment ;)
Other than that, there's only been crap recently (namely FPS or hack&slay games that claim to be RPGs)
-
*laughs maniacally*
*casts Firebrand*
-
*Casts Grease*
Oooops....sorry, wrong page ;)
-
Well Gortef if you have never tryed a text based RPG then I highly recomend you give the Continents Mud a try. It takes a lot of getting use to given the lack of grahpics but once you get past that its quite interesting. Espeacialy when you get lots of people together and try to kill gods.
Anyway if you want to try Continents you need a mud client. A good one that is free would be GMud (http://www.continents.cx/zip/) . While the ZMud on that page is good their are later versions. I think that the latest version is 1.07.
And one last thing
c 'armor' boewolf
c 'combat mind' boewolf
c 'sanctuary' boewolf
c 'heighten scence' beowolf
c 'flaming shield' boewolf
-
*casts thrall on beowolf*
uses "up the walls" to evade capture...
I've played D&D for way way too long.... and even after all these years, it still pwns all other RPG's ever.
-
never played D&D.
*casts dispel magic on linterluthion*
*casts mute on linterluthion*
-
I already touched you with thrall, you are now mine forever.... and then some...
-
Let's see.....
Firestorm (non-targeted area effect),
Hellball on Linterluthion,
Vengeful Gaze of God on Boewulf.
Shoot, wait, forgot about the side effect of Vengeful Gaze of God.

So i will do what i know.
*cast dispell magic on self*

thank's for the recommendation boewolf but I think that I'll stick with the NwN and FF's (etc.) ;)
I got too much to play allready :p
-
 at ZB and Kal. I've gotta dig out that video and watch it again, it's been way too long... :D
-
*Grey Wolf 2009 takes 205d6 damage and dies*
serves you right, for casting hellball...
*Linter screams as he melts in corner*

I suspect several posters in this thread are blithely unaware of the video we've been referencing.

Indeed, that's sad. Get with the program, guys. ;)

It's gold. I'm just sad they put an Ultor guard rather than a Command head or something in there. :p

an actual Bosch model woulda been awesome though
-
Freespace characters are too cool to hang out with those Summoner and Red Faction losers.
-
I knew there was a sensible explanation.
-
The Dead Alewives did two or three more sketches after that one. THey're funny as hell. I imagine they're still floating around on the net somewhere in MP3 form still...
-
RPG's are the game of evil! Long live FPS multiplayer!

There's a video?
I recognized it from my Dead Alewives CD. Is this some fan made thing, or is it an actual DA performance?
-
Setekh linked to it further up the thread Mik, it features charachters from various parts of Volitions works including Summoner and Red Faction. Check it out, it's bad ass.
-
Ah... I had no idea. I'm going to toss my Dead Alewives stuff into the stereo and listen to it on my way to work. It should help me relax. :)
[edit]
Oooh that's seductive. Its not work yet. ITs a job interview. man, how sad is it that I've been without a job so long that an interview practically IS work? ;)
[/edit]
-
I used to MUD... a lot. I played just one text based RPG for years called Dreamscapesmud. I kept the same character the entire time. I stopped playing when life got too busy to bother.
Other than that, I have to say my favorite RPG was Final Fantasy III. I really haven't had a really good one like that in a while, although there have been other greats (like Baldur's Gate).
-
ah the summonergeeks... ^^
I've forgotten that one allready

Huh? Sorry, I never played Summoner. I don't think I had a PS2 when that game came out.
-
He's not talking about you J3Vr6, he's talking about the movie Setekh linked to

Same to all you folks who don't know what we're talking about. Summonergeeks is an integral part of the HLP culture. :D

Si, but it was a 400 mhz little smoke-chugger. That thing didn't know if it wanted to flatline or continue existing as a big paper weight.
-
a 400mhz box should be able to handle summoner reasonably well..

Of course. It was Shrike's bar. It was going quite well until it came alive and went off on its own and we had to move to an alternate dimension. People stopped being civil at around that time.

Hah, found it! Eight hundred and ninety one posts of fun. Read it at your own risk.

Do I have to? I mean, I already know the Dead Alewives skit (I prefer part 2 to part 1, mind you. ;))
-
The movie depicts some D&D-esque characters sitting around playing... D&D. To call it surreal would be an understatement. Especially considering how they cast the "Where are the cheetos" guy.

That thread has to be in the top 3 threads we've had....
Wow. I didn't get in there until page 38?

I wonder why no one mentioned the Fallout series - though Fallout 2 became too combat oriented, it was never the less on the same level as Planescape IMHO (though I've only seen the later never played it).
Battletech could be fun too - though it's more a strategy/tactics game than RPG.
BTW - Flaser draws his smartgun, and lights his cigarette with the with hot barrel after firing it in a random direction.
Between two puffs he check how all the mages react to this different kind of 'magic'.
'What, you want some fire too?'
