Post here when the news breaks. :D

Say again? :p Well, I can guess what you're talking about, but care to at least introduce this? :D

:D
Steak: http://www.atitech.com/
The press announcement is supposed to be today IIRC.

ATI and nVidia are going head to head in their latest next generation video card release. This time its the already announced GeForce 6800 up against the ATI Radeon X800Pro.
We've got some of the initial results of the 6800 so now we're waiting to see ATI's offering and see what it does better and what it does worse. My guess is that they will be rediculously close :)
-
I'm waiting to see how much the 9600xt will drop. That's all I care about.
-
Nope, the release date of the X800Pro was rumoured to be the 26th but since ATi hasn't actually said anything, it looks like it'll be unveiled on the 5th or 7th of May now. =(
-
Well its almost 2:00...I'd figure if they were going to make a press release on it...they would have done it by now. Needs time to get to the newspapers and this is about that time.
So yeah probably not to day....
Why do you figure the 5th or 7th?
-
Check that. I mean May 4th
Tuesday, May 4th:
1 of 4 Keynotes (8:30-12:00)
Industry Perspective: Windows, the Digital Revolution and the PC: Coming Together to Build the Digital World of the Future, Dave Orton, ATI
and later...
8:00pm – 11:00pm
ATI's Ruby RoX WinHEC 2004! at Gameworks
Unless ATi plans to delay even further, there's a good chance this means X800.
-
May? Darn, I can't wait that long - my dad's coming back a few days after that. Oh well. That much money not saved.
*goes off to order components from NewEgg.com*
-
Parts will probably start showing up in mid-to-late May. It'll actually be competing with the 6800 non-ultra, which won't be out until July. The part to face the 6800 Ultra will probably show up in July, also.
-
Next card i get will have the new PCIXpress technology, say bye bye AGP!
-
Do you need new PCI ports for that?
-
Of course, the new slot format should be appearing some time in the middle of this year. Next year is when they should start appearing in volume.

Its going to drop to around US$100 within the next few months after ATI has released its PCI-Express card, currently u can get the NVIDIA Geforce 6800 U for US$399 and the NU$299. ATI will certainly have to be competitive.
After reading the specs for the 6800 I'm amazed that its comparable to the top of the line workstation graphics cards, the bandwidth is excellent :D

I heard it will be "mainstream" within the next 4 months.

That's helpful, thanks. ;) I ought to get back in step with the industry, it may be time to buy another computer soon.

It will be way obsolete by the time I can afford it, that's for sure.

Found some interesting information over at the Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15555). Seems that nVidia may be thinking that the 6800 non-ultra may not cut it against the X800 Pro. If nVidia released a third card in the 6800 line between the 6800 and the 6800 Ultra (a 6800 Pro as the article suggested), that would mean that even though the outcomes of the high-end performance (6800 Ultra and X800 XT) and performance (6800 Pro and X800 Pro) categories would still be up in the air, it would give nVidia a decided advantage in the performance mainstream category (6800 non-ultra with 12 pipelines vs. the X800 non-pro/SE with 8).
-
Another bit of info (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15617) from The Inquirer.
The X800 is getting a speed boost. :)
-
Apparently, the 6800 Pro has been confirmed by some of nVidia's partners: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15616
The partners aren't listed, but on up-to-date info, the Inquirer is usually trustworthy.
-
Erm, you mean the Inquirer is usually _not_ trustworthy.
Their coverage of the 6800 pretty much gave all the possibilities to cover all their bases.
The x800 coverage also gave all the possibilities (from 12 pipe, to 16 pipe, to the launch dates [26th, 4th, 5th, 7th], to clock speeds and memory speeds.
They're pretty much reporting every single rumour in circulation XD
-
Depends on how close the product is to release. Up until about 2-3 months before release, they tend to say all the rumours. They get fairly accurate when the release date gets close.
And the 12-pipe thing was an official release by ATI, as were some of the original release dates.
-
so whats pci express? I thought AGP was faster than PCI, so what's the big craze? Yes, I am clueless.
-
Let's see.... Evolution of PC graphics:
1. Integrated into motherboard (basically a connector for the monitor, with all the work done by the CPU)
2. Add-in card using PCI
3. Add-in card using AGP
4. Add-in card for PEG (PCI Express Graphics)
PCI Express is a new standard that has nothing to do with PCI except the name. In bandwidth, they range from x1 slots, which should have about the same bandwidth as old 1x AGP slots, up to x16, which is what is used for PEG. This allows about double the bandwidth of AGP 8x.
-
So why couldn't they just increase the bandwidth on AGP?
-
PEG adds a few more things. Increased voltage to the slot, some power management technologies, etc.
Not to mention that AGP was getting a bit long in tooth.
-
At least one site is already accepting pre-orders for the X800. They also have some specs listed, though there's no telling if they're accurate or not.

Assuming graphics card performance is drastically affected by its utilization of current AGP connections, PCI-Express sounds promising. My xeon mobo has 2 pci-x slots. I wonder if that will support the new video cards.
