Title: oh, look
Post by: Carl on April 27, 2004, 09:38:52 am
we have adverts now.
Title: oh, look
Post by: Stunaep on April 27, 2004, 09:42:36 am
So I noticed. Wouldn't it be about time to get a HLP advert circulating Gamespy. It would certainly beat the crap out of 99% of the stuff that's advertised.

Oh **** **** **** **** **** ****.

Now we only lack those HUGE popups that effectively jam your machine, sprout random sounds and are no less than 1,651 Gigabytes in size. Popping up everywhere.

welcome to the internet, please leave your sanity and security at the door, as you won't be needing it.

oh god....

does this mean we are also going to get those huge in-page flash thingy's you can't erase except for refreshing or clicking on them?
Title: oh, look
Post by: Setekh on April 27, 2004, 10:37:51 am
Thankfully not. We might if we were becoming a Planet site, but... no. :p ;)
Title: oh, look
Post by: kasperl on April 27, 2004, 10:39:03 am
ok, phew.

these adds are really annoying though, if they'd only stop using animated gifs and/or kept one colour scheme.......
Title: oh, look
Post by: Setekh on April 27, 2004, 10:40:07 am
Try and ignore them. Really, you'll get used to them before long. No one seems to mind them being on the HLP 2.0 front page. ;)
Title: oh, look
Post by: kasperl on April 27, 2004, 10:41:13 am
no, but that's because they're more out of the way there.......

and they sure don't decrease forum loading times here.

And are you using a Gamespy forum, is that why we have it now?

well, we are hosted by Gamespy.

perhaps they just starting blinbly seeding all the pages on their servers with adds.

I don't mind. Its pretty unonbtrusive. If it keeps the site up and running, I'm willing to tolerate ads. They're all over the Internet now, so my brain just sort of filters them out, no big deal.
Title: oh, look
Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 11:12:13 am
I'd offer to fix it, but I already know what the answer will be, so I'll just sit here and laugh at how it looks like a piece of **** on the main index.
Title: oh, look
Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 11:15:09 am
Y'know, with a little...erm....'creative' coding, I could make it so it only shows for unregistered users.
Title: oh, look
Post by: Fineus on April 27, 2004, 11:15:45 am
You could just offer the code of your own free will... but I already know what the answer will be ;)
Title: oh, look
Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 11:20:31 am
Okay.

IIRC, the Unregistered usergroup id is 1, so:

if ( $bbuserinfo[usergroup] = 1 ) {
$bannerad = "";
} else {
$bannerad = "";
}
Then in the templates put $bannerad where you want the **** to show up for unregistered people.
Title: oh, look
Post by: Fineus on April 27, 2004, 11:23:53 am
That works untill someone from GS registers and notices the lack of banner ads - that and since this is a public forum, any of them could be looking at this thread right now :)
Title: oh, look
Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 11:25:17 am
Well you could always nuke this thread.

And you could always make up some bull**** about custom hacks on the board interfering with the banner code and how you'll fix it post-haste.
Title: oh, look
Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 11:27:29 am
OOH! I could do it so people can turn the banner off in their User Options.

i agree. banner ads are annoying, but i can handle them. pop up ads, however, are the devil.
Title: oh, look
Post by: mikhael on April 27, 2004, 12:11:46 pm
As long as they remain flash based banners in the top of the windows, I've got no complaints.

The moment they become anything more annoying though, I'm putting a proxy server up to strip flash and any banner shaped images out of HLP.

Y'know, seen as any GS people would only be checking for banners from GS offices, I could just make it so the banners only appeared if you were viewing from within the IP-blocks owned by GS.
Title: oh, look
Post by: kasperl on April 27, 2004, 01:00:53 pm
what if they just run a server wide search for their "add" string of code, and check al the code around of that string?
Title: oh, look
Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 01:03:12 pm
Then they'd have millions upon millions of pages of code to check.

They probably just run checks to see all php and htm[l] index files and a high percentage of other page-files contain the code somewhere, which the altered PHP file would.
Title: oh, look
Post by: Unknown Target on April 27, 2004, 01:26:20 pm
Just do something, God, it really messes up the overall look of HLP.
Title: oh, look
Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 01:30:17 pm
If they'd give me admin, FTP and database access, I could weave a web of deceit so intricate and all-pervasive that as far as GameSpy would know, not a thing would be amiss unless they went crawling through the code. And even then they'd have to scour through dozens of files across multiple folders and servers before they found the oddness.

Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 02:19:29 pm
If I had Flash, I'd've had a bunch of FS ships (good ones like the Myr and Orion) flying up, stopping for a second, then flying off and another one taking it's place.

Or I suppose if someone wanted to cut corners they could just have that blank space flicking through all the old featured pics.

uh... is it just me, or does the banner break the forum tables? Its wreaking havoc with line breaks, ie: removing them, and seems to have disabled word-wrap on half the forums, along with stretching everything so big that half the pages are un-viewable in AOL...

Does it HAVE to be there? Its on the main site and all the hosted sites...

Nope.

It's a toss-up between keeping it where it is and stretching the page, and moving it onto it's own line and leaving gaping black holes in the page.

What if we sat it right below the line with

so that its only going to appear in one place, and AFTER the posts so that the only thing that will be fux0red is the very bottom banner...
Title: oh, look
Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 03:36:39 pm
They could always put this in the global.php:
$banner = $_GET['banner'];
if ($banner = 1) {
$bannercode = "";
} else {
$bannercode = "BANNER CODE HERE";
}
...and pop $bannercode in the templates where they wanted it.

Then all you'd have to do would be to go to HLP/index.php?banner=1 and it'd remove the banners. SHould do anyway.

Ooh... I like this one...

Have it on by default, so that unregistered users see it, and if anyone from gamespy takes the time to register to check (after getting wind of an0n's usergroup idea), it would be there, till they turn it off, and if you hide that option somewhere, well, hidden, it would be passed by...

Well its either a very midly annoying banner ad at the top of the screen or everyone pays $10 a month to support the HLP website.

We've had banners on the top of the VW forums since the beginning.  That was part of our hosting requirements...

So I'm not sure what the uproar is about.  As long as there aren't flash overlays into my normal reading space or pop-up ads (blocked anyways) they are perfectly fine and they go towards keeping our fantastic community going.

although I block ads out of principle, IceFire has a very valid argument, and besides that, the space occupied by the banner is otherwise not used.

Alternatively, instead of removing it (which could hurt HLP in he long run) there's another way to 'remove' it. It is also possible to rig the banner html (width=0 hight=0 ring any bells?) so that the banner is still downloaded, thus producing the 'impression' to keep the sponsor happy yet being invisible because of the htmlsizing.
OTOH since we spent 99.99% of our time at any other point on a page than the top, you prolly will hardly ever see it even if you do not make it 0x0 in size (thru html, not physically resizing the img)...

OTOH since we spent 99.99% of our time at any other point on a page than the top, you prolly will hardly ever see it even if you do not make it 0x0 in size (thru html, not physically resizing the img)...

We've already considered it, and honestly - we would be jeopardising our relationship with GS for no gain. Really. GS has the right to demand a lot more than they are presently - I'd be thankful, guys. :)

indeed.

personally, i don't see what the freaking problem is.. i mean sure they can be annoying, but the thing here is to ignore them.

i mean, bloody hell, we've gone without ads for a little over 3 years now, and said ads have been /stock/ standard on every other forum on the GS network..
and when some miniscule ads crop up in the forums themselves, you whinge about it. i mean, the foxfire website has banner ads in it, it's part of the agreement i have with keenspace for their free hosting. and i don't complain about it.
Hardly anything comes free, people.. live with it.

Hey, that Freevibe ad is a fix! It asked me if I would save my friend, and I clicked 'No' and it STILL took me to their bloody website :(

I don't mind them, if they don't **** up the forum formatting... I don't mind them on VW, since it fits in the top of the page, but when its making everything too big to read, thats when i have  problem...

So what about the banners?  I was going through the FSPort website and found these that GE made...

have the lucifer chargeing up it's cannons,

also have one were an old stock fs(2) ship flys by and is transformed from old stock effects to FSO quality, includeing maybe the experimental environment mapping and decals

actualy I got it, have like a pers flying by, with "remember this?" then have it fly into a blinding sun glow, and come out the other side all shiney and glowy and stuf, then have "see freespace in a whole new light. \n freespace open \n Hard Light Productions"

actualy maybe a Basilisk, Mantacore, or Nephelem would be better

oh, wait a sec, you didn't make those

We've submitted one basic banner to GS, but their submission system seems to be having some issues. :nervous:

I like Bobb's idea, but IMHO it should be done with the Hercules or Fenris, so the hi-poly models can be used. :D
