Title: Odd soundtrack question
Post by: Nix on April 27, 2004, 08:17:14 pm
Browsing through the VP's for the sountrack on FS1 and 2, I noticed that Freespace 1's music is in such low quality.  I was wondering if interplay/volition ever released a higher quality version of the soundtrack.  Anyone know about this?

Ironically FS1's music sounds better than FS2's music tracks. They wouldnt need any 'exta quality' as theyre optimized for what they are.

I think it's a matter of theming the music. FS1's was creepy and kinda suited the whole battling unknown faceless aliens thing. The majority of FS2's was more themed for the Terran/Vasudan-Terran NTF battles, and seemed occasionally misapplied to the later battles with the Shivans.

I imagine [V] recorded their FS1 music at a higher bitrange and then reduced it to 4-bits.

still, all the ****ty 'singing' in FS2's music simply was annoying.

I believe that the file formats in Freespace 1 were 4 or 8 bit recorded at either 22,050 or 11,025 Khz whichever the low and mid ranges are. (it's 3 in the morning, not at my computer to get the khz ranges correct.) and a lot of the music in Freespace 2 is 16 bit 22,050 Khz. ( I think..) The music DOES sound better musically, that's why I was wondering if there were any other hi-res audio files floating around from Freespace 1.  I agree with the "cosmic voices" being annoying, but the file formats are in a higher bitrate in Freespace 2 than in freespace 1.  I'd just like to get ahold of perhaps the original source files that were created before compression, because with my audio setup, I can really tell the difference between a 22K and a 44.1 K file.

One can dream, right?

*LOL*
That's how it is.
(Ok, not all music is THAT bad...)

We need better music.
It's odd than no music artist ever crossed the HLP forums...

There are some but they're kept busy by all our MODs :)

I'm not sure, but there could be a way to get rid of those voices.

There are karaoke programms that cut out certain frequencies of audio files. I don't know how good the result would be, but perhaps there is someone with more knowlegde of sound, who could try it.

well used, the voice can be good.  It just hasn't been well used.

There's actually a short segment (Exodus part III- Btl_B03) where I thought the synth choir worked wonderfully-very ominous. Otherwise, well, I don't see what's so annoying about it.

Possible, but they usually don't work very well.

There was a briefing music that absolutely kicked ass.
Mr. Vega may be refering to the piece of ambientish stuff I liked as well.
I didn't think the FS2 music was soul destroying, but, .. I did resort to winamp soooooo much faster with 2 than with 1.

FS1 Has some of the best game music I've heard to date.

definately.

especially the music thingie you hear witht he command briefing when the lucy had tombaugh installation for breakfast.
but fs2 music is far from bad, it's just more "common"battle themes than the dark, threatening theme from part 1.

To me the music in FS1 sounded more like an arcade game's music than a PC game's music.

Pretty much all of the briefing music was good in FS2 but I still think brief4 is my favourite tune from both games. It really does give you the feeling of being up against it :)

I guess the thing is that different people like different styles of music :)

So true. I personally think FS2 has one of the best game soundtracks ever, only few titles have better (Outcast is my all time favorite  ) I even have one of the FS2 battle tracks as a ring sound on my cellphone :D

I like some of the music from FS1, but I love FS2's soundtrack. I really liked the singing, unlike most here. In my opinion it gave the game a great dramatic atmosphere, and to me it sounded great. Ah well...

Well, I am a music person (best bass voice in school) but i only have a built in AC'97 sound card, so it'll just be art from me

IMHO, the FS1 soundtrack is TEH best game soundtrack I know, I wish it would be in higher quality.  Actually, I extracted all the waves, merged them in a more or less logical manner (M1 - M9) and burned as a audio CD....it's pretty funny to show this CD to a person who doesn't know jack**** about FreeSpace and let them guess what it is :D

The FS2 soundtrack is also very good, but not even close to the FS1 one. My favourites are the briefings and the cinema2.wav.....they all build a very dense atmosphere.

I dont know, but without the freespace style music, I cant play freespace.  I can do it with other games, MMO's especially, but loading up my favorite DnB mixes just dont do it for me in Freespace 1/2.
Soooo... how close are we to seeing FSPort SCP edition being released?  :D .....I know, wrong forum.....

Do you know any game that has Freespace(1or2)-alike music ?

Even if it's only one track.

StarCraft: Broodwar
The Protoss Theme would fit into FreeSpace

Hmm... maybe Haegemonia. Some of those tracks feel fairly FS2ish.

Oh yes, and another thing, I really liked the piano in some of the FS2 songs.

I would really like to see a StarCraft mod for FS2.

And as there are not this many ships it won't even be very hard to do.

But I can't create a single model...

And I can't create missions. Except you like to fly around and fight without any goals and scripts

But now that I think of it...
Try to imagine this:
Your are doing your mission (kick some aliens asses), and in the background... the .... StarCraft music...:wtf:

It will not fit to FS2.

I mean one specific track. From the Broodwar expansion pack, the new Protoss theme with synthie choir in the background and the main theme played with violins.
That would fit, IMHO

About the FS1 music being choppy...it was build with midi synths, not sampled instruments and obviously optimized for the 11Khz range. It could have sounded better, but I guess the size was a problem. In 22 Khz the whole music section would have been twice as large. It was back in '98, right? :)
But I also think that the FS1 tracks were better than the FS2 stuff...not from the sound, but from the composition.

About the choirs in FS2...that ain't synth choirs! These samples come from the library "Symphony Of Voices", which contains recorded samples of some london choral choir, that consists of around 80 people (if I am not mistaken here). A synth choir would come from a synthesizer and that was not happening here!

:)

BTW, I'm currently trying to score BlOps :D (Blackwater Ops)

Have a nice day!
