Title: Killing The Banners: For Dummies
Post by: an0n on April 27, 2004, 08:21:23 pm
Find a file called "HOSTS" somewhere in your Windows directory.

Add the following to it: 127.0.0.1 ads.gamespy.com

In XP this file can be found in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

In other OS's, you're on your goddamn own.

This piece of edutainment was brought to you by an0n.

Try adding: 127.0.0.1 localhost

...to the very beginning of the file.

That sounds like a lot more work than I'm willing to do. Why don't we just not have them instead!

PS - I'm having Waffles for dinner. **** you guys. :p

We wouldn't have them, but the admins are too scared my fool-proof methods involving IP's and PHP and DVD's and XTC will be discovered and GS will boot them.

Mucking around in the Windows directory is not something that Dummies should ever attempt.

Or you can just DL/install Spybot search and destroy and say "Let there be immunization", and there will be immunization, and you will see that it is good.

What a coincidence! That's what I had for dinner!

Oh, and uh... yeah, banners suck!

Ignore 'em. You can't really be on the Net in this day and age if you're the type to be bothered by ads.

GS is going a tad bit far , forums should never have ads :hopping: its destracting... and it p***** me off , kind of reminds me about IGN, crappy site that is. I click a link it takes me to an add page and then asks me whether I want to continue, its not a f****** live and die situation I just wana see the damn page.

Thanks an0n for that fix ;)

an0n's thing works, you'll have to turn off IE for it to take effect.

With a Mozilla browser right click on the image and choose to block.

You can also block flash: http://www.makeitwork.be/mozilla/AdBlocking.htm

or use MyIE2, has a kind of an advert/popup killer built-in, or if you're comfortable with html and regexp, get a pre-parser to filter the html OTF (something like the Proxomitron)

Kamikaze: you mean Firefox, right? I don't see the option to "block this image" or whatever.

Top of the page...right side...new.  Doesn't bother me...as long as there are no pop-ups (I have blocking on anyways).

 an0n's trick means the page keeps looping on a load section, trying to get the banner, or so it appears here. Doesn't stop the site working, since everything else loads anyway, but.... tee hee...

Doesn't work for GS ads.

I had to add it to the stuff S&D dumped in there.
