The Iraqi Governing Council has approved a new Iaqi flag to symbolize the new Iraq free from Saddam. The guy in charge of selecting a new flag just called up his brother in London and told him to design one. And now they're claiming that it was the best from a number of proposals, despite the fact that the guy who designed it said his brother made no mention of a competition.

The Iraqi people hate it. They say it looks too much like the Israeli flag, and they want to have the red, black and green like every Islamic nation around them. Just shows how out of touch the IGC is. The old flag has quickly become a matter of national honour. People who support the new flag are seen as collaborators while the insurgents proudly rally under the old.
Oh, the two blue stripes are supoposed to be the Tigris and the Euphrates, while the gold stripe in the middle is supposed to be the Kurds.
Gotta say, this is a particularly heavy-handed move. Its just one more reason for normal Iraqis to hate the US and the IGC.

The governing council, after receiving pretty angry feedback, decided to change the flag... but making the blue darker!

edit: Oh, one of them in Bahrain. What's the other one? And for that matter, who designed these things?

Huh? Thats the current syrian flag so wtf are you on about? And its been changed a dozen or so times in the last 50 years

The other ones Quatar, where Centcom and Saddam Hussein are and also Al Jazeera funnily enough. As for the design, what the hells wrong with it?

Rictors already told us the Iraqi flag looks out of place so I presumed he was being serious, he certainly seems to be about Bahrain and Quatar.

Nah, I was being sarcastic about Iraq. The only flag it bears a resembelance to is Israel, and last I hear they weren't getting along well with the Arabs...
The old Iraqi flag is much more aestetically pleasing, not to mention that the actual citizens like it.
But I was dead serious about Quatar and Bahrain. Poor guys, probably didn't have a decent graphics program when it came time to choose the flag, so they had to make do with Word clipart....
Interesting thing is, in the "A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm" report, Frum, Perle & Co. recommended that the old monarchy be re-instituted in Iraq after Saddam was overthrown. Shades of Iran anyone?

I don't see any similarity with it to the Israeli flag, but I agree this is stupid, I'm begining to think it might be a good time to add "is Bush trying to lose?" to my sig, so that I don't have to keep retypeing it

Lose what? The war or the world opinion? He can bomb the **** out of anything that moves, but is utterly incapable of keeping even the allies he had to begin with. And thats the main fault with American foreign policy. Its making alot of enemies, while being unable to either win any new friends or pacify the existing enemies. Tanks and planes and yes, even the almighty dollar, all pale in the face of a growing mentality of anti-Americanism.

The similarity to the Israeli flag is in the colours bobboau, green, red black and white are all important colours in both Islam and Arab nationalism. To an Iraqi it'd probably look like the US was getting rid of these colours on purpose.
As for ****, hes not exactly the shiniest pebble on the beach, that was pretty obvious from the start. Starting to realise why lots of people were against the war yet?

Typically, most flags follow one of three designs: The Arab-esq blacks, reds, whites and greens; The British red, white and blue; Or some variation of the old communist flags.
There are, of course, a few exceptions which occur in countries that have never been part of anything with any power.

That new design is a shocker. They really ought to stick with the original colour scheme, if nothing at all. :doubt:

yeah, I'd have used something a lot closer to the origonal, maybe just removeing the writeing from between the stars, this thing just screams "hey, you've been concured and are being ocupied by people who have no idea who you are" hell putting that on fabric and flying it would probly convey this less, as I don't think most Iraqis can read english (though I could be quite wrong, I know there amung the more educated arabs)

I think putting a Crescent Moon (Which is not the symbol of Islam, since the Quoran forbids symbolism or even the making of human 'images' in it's strictest form, but is, in fact a pre-Islamic symbol originating from Turkey, representing the Sun-God Tanri) and a Yellow stripe underneath it will do nothing but anger people. Not very well thought out at all :(
