Two screenshots of the high-resolution version of Rimscape, a game being developed by wEvil and myself (along with a very skilled Java programmer, Malohkan) inspired by Nodewars and using ship models similarly inspired by Nodewars ships.
The game is in 2d mainly because it's being developed for MIDP2.0 Java phones, and there's a low resolution version that will be for phones. The high-res version is playable on most PC OSes.
Gameplay is similar to Elite, Escape Velocity, Privateer, and Freelancer as this is a free-form "sandbox game" where you purchase ships and items. Unlike these games, there's a bit of influence from Master of Orion/Diablo in how items are handled as there are different types of item variants with increasing rarity. For example you might have a missile, or you could have a shield piercing missile that's a little more expensive and so a rarer item.
The main goal is of course to have a game that is as non-linear as possible and you can do what you want to do in the game. Smuggle contraband, be a pirate, be a mercenary, etc.
Pretty much this is intended to be a visually simple game, with a lot of depth.
Hopefully, by the end of May we'll be ready for beta testing and I'll post up a link on HLP for testers.
Plans are already starting on a 3d version with net code that we'll begin development on probably this fall.

Ah, so that's why he wanted into the old story forums.....

Looks groovy, Ace.

oooh, solar winds/ nova like... cool
-
Playable on phones, eh?
This is looking really great, Ace. End of May? I'll be watching.

These are ingame shots from the low-res cellphone version:

Of course icons and such will be tweaked and in the end both versions will look as much alike as possible.
The main differences between the two is the lower resolution and the cell version's screen being vertical as opposed to horizontal.

Any plans to make it playable on PDAs? I'd dearly love something like that on my Zaurus.

:eek2:
That completely blows even snake out of the water.
I'm not sure if it can compare to push push though
Please say it will be freeware.

Right now there's not any plans, but if you're able to find someone willing to port it over from the java applet, sure :)

Nope, it's going to be shareware. Free demo version with a limited number of systems and items, the full version will be a low price. Actual price will depend on negotiation with a publisher but I'm aiming for $5.00 USD.

Hey, I gotta JVM on my Zaurus. :D

Nifty. I wish I knew people who I could make games with. :(
Well, let me rephrase that. Sane people who I could make games with...
-
lol.
Java is pretty versatile. It can run on almost any platform provided it has its own Java Virtual Machine. So you could even do a version for PC and Linux.
I'm actually starting work on a Java prog to access databases over phones, and online and PDA's etc. Take a while. Lucky I've got a good team of developer's with me :D
Good Luck with the game Anaz :)
btw, everyone I know who is good at Java is not completely... Sane (including me :p ) so you can't blame them, because its Java's fault. ;)
