Title: E3 Video capture scramble!
Post by: Kazan on May 03, 2004, 10:46:46 pm
Here is the challenge: Find the Best screencapping program capapble of recording video - take advantage of the time dialiation (enable cheats via "www.freespace2.com" being typed in during the mission and it enables you to lower tiem speed down to 1/4) if you to achieve framerates.

Post results in this thread.

Preferably compression: Xvid
Audio = BONUS

you want to know which tool's the best? or do you want vid's?

if the first then I can only say FRAPS, has both video/audio

I can use FRAPs and i'd be willing to do something, but the problem is - nothing seems to want to open the files FRAPs is creating. I seem to be missing a codec or something 0.o

LS what version of Fraps u using because 1.9 is better than 2.0, there might be some problems between them on some systems as well.
Title: E3 Video capture scramble!
Post by: JarC on May 04, 2004, 09:13:47 am
some info on FRAPS
1.9 is still freeware but does not allow vid scaling and does not record sound and it runs on most cpu's
2.0 can scale, records sound but ain't free anymore (and you need as minimum a CPU with SSE instructions, P3/P4/Athlon)

both versions produce uncompressed avi.

MediaPlayer tries to find a codec and says class is not registered, and VirtualDub comes up with this error:

Does it have to be stock FS2?

And what're the keys for the slowmo time thingy? (I never knew the normal time keys in the first place :()

Google it...I had the same problem, and had to search quite a while for it, but right now I can't find it again.

I've searched but havent found anything.

It works with WindowsXP (yuck) so i'll just resort to that until I find (if you could find the linky that'd be cool) it.

Lightspeed, you said you could record, right?  How about you record something and put it up to see if anyone else can open it...  That may help you narrow down the problem.
Title: E3 Video capture scramble!
Post by: Lightspeed on May 04, 2004, 01:29:39 pm
Of course they can. Everyone with WinXP will be able to open it.

All I need is some codec that allows me to show/use YUV12 formats as opposed to RGB formats.

I have a video cap of me playing WCSaga that i'm sending to E3 with inqui - i would put it up for general download but it's 125megs and i know i would easily overload deepbluebettas.com's monthly bandwidth if I posted it for you leeches :P

I try the fly through the hanger of one of the kilrathi destroyers and my big ass longbow doesn't clear the hanger *collision bounce* DOH!

um......this may sound like a silly question, but how do you end up speeding up the videos once they've been taken in the slow motion build??
Title: E3 Video capture scramble!
Post by: Kazan on May 04, 2004, 03:12:35 pm
singh: change the framerate in  a postprocessing program like Virtualdub (free ware, good)
Title: E3 Video capture scramble!
Post by: Singh on May 04, 2004, 03:35:45 pm
hey! That worked.
Now all I have to do is figure out how not to make the music stagger so much! :/

Thanks Kazan :)

type in www.freespace2.com followed by `+shift+<

Unfortunately, this is the best sacrifice I can give for the SCP guys right now.

Which version are you referring to? the old one had the ugly white lines; this one doesn't. Unless you are referring to the new textures.........if you're upset about those, just re-run a recording on your PC and upload - i did put up hte mission ya know ;)

Umm, that one makes things happen in slow motion at certain points. And eugh, that god-awful vanilla shockwave - the 3D expanding sphere is better.

Here's something I recorded today. Not too good, but anyway.

Note that it will take about 36 more mins to upload - and download it quickly as I will take it down again tonight.

[spam/rant]

Ach. Forgot to mention something: If the vid itself is too sucky, remember that TheMission (http://anandraj.sphosting.com/cutscene2.zip) is up as well, so if that can be run in full resolution with all the ub3r features. I just ran it with Multisampling x4, all the stuff in the media VP, bob's new particle stuff and it was superb, to say the least.

Ok. some comments on the video:

Pretty good actually. I loved the combat scenes with the fighters, but the camera angles on the capitals and when the destroyer jumps in are simply dis-orienting and confusing. You may want to consider use of the change-position SexP to get a still camera angle (use it multiple times to get the scene angles you want) and record from then on in. Its a lot easier than steering (which causes too many jitters IMO) and the somewhat sucky AI.........

Pretty good though!

I wish I was good at this sort of thing, what I want to do is have  a capture of the last mission, with System of a Down's Innervision playing, have it eddited to so that the shockwave hits just as the realy loud part after the realy quiet part at the end comes in.

that subspace vid is, good, but people realy should put suns at the ends of the effect in mission, otherwise nothing get's lit other than the glow maps.

I spent the last hour or two, reintegrateing decals trueform and environment mapping, I also have a few other small tweaks that are native to my codebase

use the following comandline options;
-max_subdivide 2.10 (trueform, may cause instability, the 2.10 is part of it, use higher number for more subdivision, doesn't effect geometry at this point (only lighting, yo will see a big diference))
-bobshield (new shield rendering effect, initaly for capship shields, but I think its better all around)

http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/fs2_open_r_future_demo.zip

to get decals working, you will need to alter weapons table
Code: [Select]

$decal:
+texture: bullethole01_A
+radius: 2.0

goes at the end of an entry

Lightspeed: Another good vid. Problem is, Its a bit too long, and the fighter combat, although extensive, is a little too much and repetitive. That, and their aren't any beams in there :P

Gives me an idea though!

get a decent graphics card.

Oh, and use the time compression - set time to 1/4 of real time, that will solve most of your problems.
