Because there was a Rutger Hauer flick called Blind Samurai--or at least there was one in which he PLAYED a blind swordsman. :D

Blind Fury ROCKED.  I love that movie.

Did you know that the kid in the movie later was in Baywatch as Michael Knight's son?

This story was processed in over 20 other films in Japan, it's one of their classics, the way Europeans handle Hamlet.

Zatoichi is just the latest producer/director to make his version.
