Title: Best Freelance Space Sim?
Post by: Johnmike on May 08, 2004, 06:44:31 pm
Pretty self explanatory.  It's in the FS2 forum since more space sim people come here.  ...o.O  What's your favorite?  So far I've played Hardwar...  Might want another.  I've heard of X2 and EVE.  o.O

Freelance as in free-roam universe?

Independence War 2.  Hands down.
Freelancer is a distant second

Freelancer's quite good, though a bit static.

X² is the worst game you could ever wish to have - really, each and every aspect of it sucks.

EvE is a MMO game so unless you want to waste money, you can forget about it.

I've heard good things about I-War2.

Ok this game doesn't exist (yet) but what do you think about a 2D Solar Winds or Asteroids/Elite style game? Where ships would basically be collection of different kinds of modules. All modules would be connected to a skeleton module, and you'd be able to connect skeleton modules togheter, so that you could "grow" your spaceship to the exact sice and shape you want.

Starflight was THE freelance space sim. Way before any others...

I wasted entire weeks on that thing :D

All around? Privateer, Escape Velocity. Freelancer gets good marks in production values and moddability, and Vega Strike looks to be coming along nicely.

This sounds like the concept for Wing Commander/Privateer Online before it got canned.

yeah right, you'd play it now, you'd hate it :p

Privateer 2 was neat, but too limited in the end.
But that was the online game where I really enjoyed toying around with my ship to customize it. Not that impersonal and bloated way Freelancer did.
Freelancer is cool but lacks mood
Iwar2 is awesome, but after a while it gets boring coz you can only pirate stuff, and that's pretty useless actually. Plus that's a game you can't just play for 1 hour to kill time.

I playing Elite 3 and X² - The Threat.

Both are great.

I-War 2 was like Freespace 2. But in I-War 2 you must organize your eqipment yourself. You must attack freighters and capture the Cargo. Then you sell it and you buy new Equipment. But new Ships you got only in Missions. But you can decide what Mission do you want to play.

The rest is similar to other Space Action Games.

I think you're being a tad harsh there Lightspeed. The game has several redeeming features....

It has a huge universe, is very moddable, excellent graphics (For the most part, though yeah, the Space Suit looks like it belongs in XWing (You remember that old game? :p)).

On the downside, the economy is a bit wobbly if you don't mod it, there could have been slightly more diversity in ships I suppose, Capital ships are both rare sights and way out of scale...

Oh the most annoying bug of all... the AI is thick as pig S***. Surprisingly modders found that by reducing turning speed by 50% on all ships actually made the AI quite kamikazing you ever 2 minutes.

But you do need to give the game kudos for huge universe, excellent graphics most of the time, and generally good moddability.

Hm...  Any more suggestions?  I'm thinking of making a poll thread after this, or is that a bad idea?

Also, no one mentioned Hardwar but me...  =/

Actually I loved hardwar.... It was a fun game :) Not really a space sim though... Hardwar was on a moon or asteroid I think

Titan - The moon.  It's close enough to a space sim to count.  You fly MOTHs, hovercrafts.

Bah.. Well I havenae played it since it was a new game and that was... how many years ago?

But yeah, I agree Hardwar is a fun game but I'm hesistant to actually call it a space sim.

I'd say Iwar2 is probably my Favourite for this

After doing research on I-War, I'd say it's worth buying.  I'll make it a present to me after I build my new computer.  o.o

Well I gotta point out, I don't think I-war was actually freeform, it was mission/story based, as you were in the navy, no? And you always flew the same ship I think... I-war /2/ was freeform ish as you played a pirate and generally had to go around being a space pirate and stealing cargo
