Any idea if (when?) it's coming to PC?

Ow, I'm seriously not gonna get my hopes up. Release dates tend to shift forward in time just a little bit too often for my taste... :p

Actually, Bungie stated many times that they would only announce a release date when they were positively, absolutely sure that it could be met. Rumors also say that the game is done, and all that's really delaying it is some sort of revamp of the XBox Live system... But I can't be sure of that.

Not likely, Bungie are still tuning the game, they have weekly updates on their website. The major Xbox live update was Tsunami (clan support, voice messages on invites, MSN messenger support) and that was done about two or three weeks ago I think. Unless they have another big update planned.

Also the word is that Halo 2 is Xbox only, that means no PC and no Mac versions but I'm not sure how reliable the source was for that piece of information.

It could well be if they don't use Gearbox again.

I do wonder though, how they're able to get really hi-res 1600*1200 screenshots, such as these (http://www.bungie.net/Games/Halo2/Gallery.aspx?Gallery=Screenshots&page=3).

Because the Xbox can render at high resolutions using 480p, 720p and 1080i modes for HDTV's. Also, the Dev-Xboxes can output even higher resolutions for screenshots and such.

It'd be nice if I could get a hold of a Dev Xbox, but apparently, you can't... :( wonderfull tools they are...

Not having played the XBox version what was wrong with the PC version? Okay No Co-op mode is a bit of kick in the nuts but apart from that?
Title: Halo 2 release date announced
Post by: Hippo on May 11, 2004, 02:23:59 pm
the fact it took 3 years, and that its requirements are over the top for a lot... (not for me though) :p
Title: Halo 2 release date announced
Post by: phreak on May 11, 2004, 02:24:20 pm
apparently it ran alot slower, but then again a PC isn't a dedicated console.  I would trade speed for a keyboard and mouse however.
Title: Halo 2 release date announced
Post by: Hippo on May 11, 2004, 02:33:42 pm
it only runs slower for me (Geforce 2 Mx, 450Mhz, 320Mb SDRam, and 2048 MB Virtual Ram) duing heavy firefights, or instances with many bipeds, or a lot of scenery, or if i turn on decals (bullet holes, blood, etc) or turn texture detail up... biggest problem with the PC version, is that it NEEDS a high end video card to look decent... (though my setup isn't too bad)

EDIT: a lot of that goes in respect to the amount of VRam, since i could set it as 20gigsish and probably get great performance...
Title: Halo 2 release date announced
Post by: phreak on May 11, 2004, 02:40:57 pm
well it will run slow since your system specs are lower than that of an XBox and the XB doesn't have windows/virus scanners/IM programs to contend with.
Title: Halo 2 release date announced
Post by: IceFire on May 11, 2004, 02:46:17 pm
Yeah I was going to say what Phreak there said.  The X-Box specs are roughly:

Pentium III 733
GeForce video system (comperable to the GeForce 4 Ti but tweaked for X-Box)
256 or 512mb ram (I forget)

So right away the reason it runs slower on your system is because you are under the specs for both the X-Box and the PC version of the game.  The PC version also boosted visual quality a little by adding PS2.0 support.

Halo did have some minor performance issues with some combinations (mostly GeForce FX and PS2.0 which is not game related) but it worked pretty well from what I understand.  The demo flew on my system...no problem.

So what did Gearbox do wrong (aside that it took so long to get to us)?
Title: Halo 2 release date announced
Post by: Hippo on May 11, 2004, 02:47:11 pm
right, but they were supposedly optonizing it to run on standard systems, which they failed to do miserably...
Title: Halo 2 release date announced
Post by: 01010 on May 11, 2004, 02:50:06 pm
Xbox has 64mb of ram, it uses the hard drive for streaming with most games. Also, the nVidia chip is a custom jobby that uses the GF3 as a guideline but with advanced (when it was released anyway) pixel shader support. I think it supports normal mapping too but I'm not 100% on that.

The Halo PC port was a travesty, I prefer the console version by far (controller and all) because it just feels right, the mouse and k/b control on the port was sluggish and the pacing felt off.

Exactly, though its not too bad with a joystick with a hatswitch for movement and the x/y access for seeing...

Actually, I suppose it's just because they come from PC. You know, you don't code directly on the console ;)

But they run the code on the Xbox not the PC. That's where the images come from. It was explained by one of the Bungie guys on the HBO forum.

yes, the code is written on a computer, and then via the dvd (or a direct link in the Dev cases) the code is run on the xbox, therefore you can always program something on a platform it won't run on (pc in this case) and see it in action (ala testing and such) on the dev boxes...

The Xbox version runs flawlessly on the box, (unless you exploit a flaw in the rendering...)

Spoiler:
play co-op and bash a dead elite till theres blood all over the ground, and stare at it, and the game goes in slow motion...

Actually, it's lower poly, like most of the models in Halo 2, clever use of bumpmapping and normal mapping (much like Doom 3 in fact).

What was your problem with the race? It was quite fun I thought. One of my favourite parts of the game.

Although the time on legendary when I got blasted by the final elite 10m from the ship was somewhat annoying. I got my revenge the next time though by firing a rocket launcher at him from five metres away. Dodge this you black ops bastard :D

Nah, the problem is not the enemies, the problem is that the counter goes off at 20 meters of the ship :p
At least, I'm consistent in my worthlessness, I always get the same result :p
But really, when you lack the motivation...

Do actually stop and wait for FoeHammer? So I guess you've never seen the extended outro then?

No, I don't wait for foehammer. And no, I haven't seen the extended final. That's the reason I wanted to beat the game in legendary, but in the end, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle.

Nah. They'll probably just stand around and go Wobb-Wobb-Wobb a lot before being blown away by a plama grenade :D

I've never had much of a problem with blues. Reds, yeah. Reds can be complete bastards to fight. On occasion I've had more trouble with them than with golds. (Golds have a tendancy to be overconfident and charge at you. One even did this AFTER I had fired a rocket at the group he was in. What followed was the quickest Gold kill I ever made :D )

Best way to kill any type of elite is to wait for them to charge, dodge out of the way and give them a quick tap in the back of the skull, works like a charm. OR, just shoot them in the head with pistol.
Title: Halo 2 release date announced

BTW it is kinda funny how pistol almost always is a better weapon then AR.

Post by: karajorma on May 13, 2004, 05:00:44 pm
Except that I can never get the buggers to charge. Either I can't hit them at all with weapons fire from what I'm carrying and resort to grenades or I manage to shoot them dead while they are still roaring and preparing to charge.

Quite funny how they said the Needler was 'actually worth picking up' in Halo 2 - it was one of the best anti-Elite weapons in the original. Granted, if you were playing on anything less than Legendary it'd be less useful, but the ability to kill an Elite by spraying a clip of shards into the air was particularly useful :)

I'm looking forward to H2 far more than HL2 now, (even though I don't have an XBox)! However Valve's wonderful new engine features are, Bungie's ability to write you into a powerful, compelling story in a kick-ass sci-fi universe is Halo's best attribute and is going to be more immersive than flinging radiators around with a gravity gun.

Flying over the huge gap, 500 meters, and 2 minutes...

A quick snap of the easter egg... I tried one with the PoA in the background, and fire and stuff, but i missed it... The Halo( in each corner is just a command override to freeze the game and movies...

The pistol? I never waste pistol ammo on parasites... pistol ammo is precious... *hordes his ammo and goes back to play legendary* ;) Seriously though, don't you just melee the parasites? They're such a waste of ammo... :D

The Assult rifle. Much better against parasites than the pistol.

Malee works but the first time you encounter the flood malee never seemed like a good idea to me. I needed to make sure I took down a lot of them before the combat forms burst through the door.

Besides I've never run out of AR ammo on any level with the flood :D

Yeah, good point. (It's melee, btw, with an 'e'. ;)) The first time I played 343GS, I was pretty freaked out too. :nervous:

And yeah. Now wonder they never seem to run out of ammo, every combat form runs around with 500 bullets. :D

Doh! Typo :) You don't play AD&D for years without learning the correct spelling :D

The marines are even more impressive. They can follow you all the way through a level with a snipers rifle and never pick up ammo :D Pretty impressive trick that :)

My favourite thing to do in the game is to find shortcuts though :) There are a couple of good ones in the game. I think my favourite is stealing a banshee in Assault on the Control Room :D  I don't think the designers thought anyone would try that cause no more enemies spawn on the pyramid if you do :D

You can? I just gave it a try and I could only get to the first platform (losing my overshield in the process)

Any attempt to fall any further resulted in a painful death.

Well, i turned off decals and high texture stuff so that it runs faster... As for them not being there yesterday, swooh seemed to have a hiccup... They do seem very dark though, not sure why...

As for flood, all I'll use is the Shotgun and Pistol... Shotgun for up close woork, and pistol for distance work, or hunters, since on Heroic and Ledgendary, the flood are like a sponge to AR bullets... I'll occasionally swap the pistol for a Rocket Launcher, like most of Two Betrayals (since you run out of Shotgun ammo near the end and you're always fighting wraiths) or at the middle of the maw for the engine room, but i'll NEVER use the AR against flood... Even in the beginning of the Maw, i'll use a plasma rifle, and then swap the AR for a shotgun, then the plasma for the first pistol...

The AR is pretty much useless in single player, it's greatest asset is doubled with a shotgun in multiplayer, a shotgun blast rips apart the shields, the AR rips them apart. Good combo, as well as the pistol/shotgun and pistol/sniper rifle.

Personally I love using an overcharged plasma pistol shot to take out their shields before running up and smacking them in the face with a melee. Don't know what hit em half the time.

meh, pistol owns multiplayer, although im partial to a bit of sniping and rocketing warhogs

its always satisfying to get a headshot from afar with the rifle, and take out a warthogs driver. Mmmmmmmmm

I've just been playing online and I have to admit the quality of player is very poor. I haven't met anyone yet that offers the challenge that playing against my friends does.

Are you playing with the Full version, or the demo? I know that 70% of the people who play online in the full version are tightasses, and yell at the game host to ban or kick someone (which isn't possible except on standalone servers, which shows how much they know) if they take the tank before them, or steal their kill, or even accidentially run them over... Its much like trying to read any Halo forum (with the exception of gearbox) since nobody knows english (no offence to anyone) and people insist on flooding their posts with capital letters, or *****ing at each other...

I was playing on an 8 player server and won by a clear 16 kills on a 25 kill game of slayer. Everytime I killed someone it was "OMG U GAY" kept *****ing at me because the dumb **** kept running at me while I had a rocket launcher.

Then moaned that all I used was the rocket launcher (I use the shotgun almost permanently so that was bollocks) then moaned when I got into the Banshee once. I told him if he doesn't like the weapons and he doesn't like the vehicles that he's playing the wrong game.

This was the demo BTW. The game runs pretty good now I've got my shiny new Radeon9800 pro, but I need more nice looking games to play on it (I already have far cry)

They're alot like that on the full version servers, but they REALLY want it their way since they paid for the game...
