So that's gonna be rap and R&B music? Thanks but no thanks.
When they make GTA: Wembley 1991, I'll reconsider :p

I'm kinda with Nico, it looks like fun but the theming of this one just doesnt do much for me (assuming it is all hip hop and rap).

I'm not too impressed with the graphics, to be honest.  It looks the same as Vice City, IMO.

And to be even more honest, I really can't see how they can continue this series.  I mean, what else can you do with the game?   I think by now you've played every single type of mission...  Now it's just gonna be a rehash.

Post by: Fineus on May 12, 2004, 08:08:43 am
Not necessarily.. I mean if they added more features to the game there's scope for missions other than playing taxi, killing or whatever.

That said, the engine does look like it's coming to a close. If they create another one it's going to have to be brand new..

And then Driver 3 is gonna come out and then where will you be?

I say after this GTA, they don't do one til the next playstation version comes out.

Yeah, that's true. The creators have something else in mind instead of trying to make better graphics than those games.
Be glad that there is more stress on gameplay than looking. At least I appreciate those companies, who do not have graphics as their primary priority.

I don't know what screenshots you guys are looking at, but they looks pretty great to me. Far beyond the GTA3 or VC graphics. And not only in terms of poly count or texture resolution, but also atmosphere.

Gotta bear in mind that GTA is a different beast to Doom 3. Doom 3 is all about a dark, scary and overall enclosed atmosphere - GTA 3 is all about big open spaces and sprawling working cities. You couldn't possible render a fully working city in real time using the Doom 3 engine and expect to turn it into a game... even if it does look better.

Even Half Life 2 - while more open aired - is just what you can see. Lots of locked doors and a fairly linear direction. It's a trade off between having one massively detailed set of roads - and an entire working city.

That said.. Halo (as an engine) has a lot of detail in it as well as a large amount of land... as does UT2004. Both are newer engines that GTA3s so I'm sure they could come up with something more impressive with a new engine... of course I'm not sure what new directions they could take - but I imagine just making an entire working city where you can act as a normal citizen might would be a start - then build a crime underground around that.

That rant would actually have some meaning if said doom3 and HL2 were lacking gameplay wise, and if the GTA creators had something else in mind than creating yet another sequel to GTA :doubt:.

A reason why there should be stress on gameplay rather than on graphics. To not to make just another sequel.

Unfortunately nobody (mainstream at least) wants to play a game that looks ugly...

That sums up about exactly what I think of the GTA series improvement.

Funny thing really, GTA3 was a first - and Vice City was more of an addition of details - a cash in perhaps - but a good one. San Andreas is pushing it though. It really doesn't look like the technology involved has changed much, so there's not much excuse there.

I guess it's all down to personal taste. GTA3 has a good formula.. they seem to be taking the "why change what isn't broken" approach.

*sigh*

Same engine. Same stuff :sigh:

For me it looks like nothing changed. Just better lightning. The engine is still the same, the trees are still 2d, and the textures look outdated....even worse than VC.

Oh the horrors of playing a game that doesn't have the uber graphics......play a game cuz it's fun, not because it looks good.

And why are you guys complaining about the engine? FS1 and 2 used the same one, but like VC, FS2 updated the original. There's nothing wrong with game developers doing that.

Nothing wrong when they're really upgrading it :p

But I'll rephrase your first sentence for you:
Oh the horrors of paying a game that doesn't even have upgraded graphics...
Ok, I'll say what I think very clearly: that should be an addon, not a full blown game. That's a ****ing rip-off.
There's certainly more interesting things to spend money on.
Ah, yeah, there's Ninja Gaiden out tomorrow.

GTA 1 and GTA 2 had identical graphics. And people bought GTA 2 as well. The same is true for example for Doom 1 and 2.

Wrong, GTA2 had an updated engine (you can see it in the lighting).

Not that this matters much... if you ask me GTA2 was worse than the original.

Your point being? Doom2 wasn't worth the money either ( that's why I got it w/o paying :p ), neither was GTA2. And people buying it doesn't make it any better, there's also pictures of people who eat **** on the net, that doesn't mean **** is worth eating.

"1st guy - It's a new fashion, it's called suicide!!
2nd guy - Great, what is it all about?!?
1st - You just get a gun, stick it on your head and pull the trigger.
2nd guy - That is just so cool!! Where do people get these new ideas?
1st - Like I said, it's a brand new fashion. Look at me trying!
*BOOM*
2nd - Oh dude, I've got to try this stuff.
*BOOM*"

That's pretty much my opinion :D

I just hope this game is better than the last or by god I'm going to rip off the head of the lead programmer!!

*gets his trusty chainsaw*

Of course, it was the exact same with more weapons, monsters and levels, they didn't attempt to make people believe it was a new game or something. But it could, it should have been an addon. And I'm not even talking about final doom, ultimate doom, etc.
With GTA, they ty and make people believe it's a brand new game. That's what I can't swallow.

What I look at is that all GTA games have been average looking, but have been some of the most fun and innovative and open games I've ever played and to me, that is way more important than some nice eye candy.

How can anyone possibly comment on the gameplay of a game that has had only three screenshots released and nothing more. Oh wait, there was a one paragraph description of the setting...

And just looks at FS1-FS2. Not that much of a difference, but a refinement to be sure.

I wanted to take FS1 and 2 as example previously, but I thought you would throw tomato at me for it. If you deepen into the difference between FS1 and 2, you can see several major changes. Background, nebula, weaponry or new types of ships(AWACS), for example.

Some more info, apparently San Andreas is a COUNTY that encompasses THREE cities with countrside to drive around in. Something like 6-8 times larger than Vice City.

Dammit this better be coming to PC.

HIG, hope you're right. I can cope with rap but I'd rather it was something more like Rock...

01010, I also hope you're right! It'd be nice to take some cars out for cross country rampages rather than through cities.. which, lets face it, only encompass so much.

Well the thing about VC was that yes, it was a lot bigger than GTA3, but 70% of it was water.

I think what they did was remake GTA1 into three games:  Liberty (GTA3), Vice City (GTA: VC), and San Andreas.

I don't know if I'd buy this game cuz I really don't know what else they could add to this game.  Different weapons?  big deal.  Different missions?  How could that be possible after 4 titles.  Different cars?  All the same but with different bodies, and if it's based on the 90's, they'll be like GTA3.  New music?  woopie.
