Title: I admit it, I'm weak.
Post by: Rictor on May 13, 2004, 02:45:01 am
Damn Gamespy and their..their....shenanigans!

Currently downloading a 680 mb Half Life 2 video from Fileplanet. There was a torrent seed at Filerush earlier, but it appears to have been taken down. After more than an hour in line, the video will be done in about 3-4 hours.

I distinctly remember this exact same situation last year, staying up all night for the giganto HL2 video, though at the time me and my bro had an excuse (studying for exams, ha!).

There is a 33mb video, but it is a shaky-cam version (very, very shakey), and apparently the full one has some added footage.

You can grab the video from Fileplanet if you'de like, or wait around until it is hosted elsewhere or appears in torrent form. Judging from the low-res version, its gonna be worth it.

Is this a new video? I've already got the E3 presentation video (I think that's what it was..)

Depends on when you downloaded it. There was HL2 video at last year's E3, but this is the 2004 one. :)

IIRC they're hosting some pretty ridiculously high-res stuff there.

On that note, good luck to anyone who can wade through the FilePlanet lines. Their coverage is awesome though, check out all the stuff they've got on offer - no wonder everyone is trying to download it all so frantically.

Like Steak said the file (at least last years) is in fullscreen resolution and is half an hour long (in quicktime format)... it really shows off the engine well as well as the features they've put in it.. assuming you can download it of course.

Glad to hear there's a new one out. I'll try and sort my way through Fileplanets ques later on.

Its 9am and I've just woken up to find it sitting neatly on my hard drive. Man I feel like I've just climbed Everest, hopefully the view from the top will be worth it.

its up on Suprnova for whats it worth. Though the seed:leach ratio is like 1:100, so Fileplanet still might prove to be the faster alternative for now.

The ridiculous thing is, after I eventually got the HL2 video last year, I had to convert the whole thing to DIVX and reduce the resolution because the movie wouldn't even run smoothly on my PC. Not much hope for the game itself, then.

Oh, and Jev (that's what I see whenever I read your name, so that's what I'm gonna call ya ;)), you'll need BitTorrent installed to open that link.

Yeah, there are definitly some new parts here, not available in th shaky-cam version. The whole frst 10 minutes is new. For me, the most impressive parts were when nothing was happening, no fighting, just you wnadering around the world. It shows your arrival at City 17 as well as one or two other sequences like this. The interaction factor im simply amazing. Eveything and everyone in the world responds to you as they would in real life. There are some places where you think "this has got to be scripted", but its not. That I think will be the thing that sets HL2 apart.

I won't give anything away, but in some places the mood and setting are very reminiscent of 1984.

I don't know.... it was originally in Quicktime, and I've always had dodgy performance with that - if anything else is running it refuses to run smoothly.

Yeah, you find that too? That makes me feel a little better. ;) As for the current files, I think I'm going to be waiting a few weeks till everything calms down, then grab the files when FP's quiet and the queues are all empty. :D

well, I'd like to see the new one, but I must know if it's in wmv format beforehand. Because for some codec problems (which I'm too lazy to solve :p) wmv files crash my explorer/the software I'm trying to play the file with.

it would be quite frustrating to d/l a ~700M video and then realize that I can't play it

Gortef, the version I downloaded, and I think every version, is in Quicktime format.
