As you may know if you read the SCP forum, I am working on an article for PlanetDescent that I hope to convince Gamespy features editor to push out to the whole network.
It concerns you all ;)
here's the relevant section of the letter I sent to Kevin Bowen, who is overall planet site director (and the guy who sent me the E3 pass for Gamespy):
I am working on an article on various independent development efforts in the
Descent and Freespace game space. Basically, several of the earlier
Interplay published games (noteably Descent 1 and 2, and FreeSpace 2) have
had their source code made public, and most of the Descent and Freespace
games have publically created toolsets, and small groups of independent
developers have banded together in each case to maintain and extend those
games, in many cases modernizing them to the point where they are close to
on par with newly released PC titles.
Of course, the release of source code isn't new news, but, it seems pretty
hit and miss whether groups spring up and take on any "official" banner, so
it seemed a worthwhile piece to write, especially given the recent troubles
Interplay has had, the company that was "By Gamers, For Gamers" is having
more than a few of it's products maintained "by gamers, for gamers."

Basically, I am working on the article I mentioned about, but, I certainly could use help. I know all about things like the FS SCP, since I "run" it, but I could use help getting information and conducting interviews of people like the D1x and D2x project leads.
So, anyone wanna help?
-
Are D1x and D2x, the former in particular, still even under active develoment?
-
don't use "new news", it sounds unprofessional :D:D
also, "close to BEING on par" is what I would use.
wait, oh you already sent this didn't you?
sorry, I don't know much about the Descent games, so I can't really be of any help in that area. Be sure to post the final article here, I'm looking forward to reading it.
-
I have been corresponding with Kevin already, I was cutting and pasting the note of interest for everyone to see what was going on.
Admiral: I dunno, that's why I am asking for help ;)

There's the Interviewers forum...
-
Need to find the people to interview, unless I missed the point of that response?
-
I'm not up to date on the happening of the Descent community, but I would pretty much bet that there's a lot more to Descent 3 nowadays, along with the rumored Descent 4 non-profit development.
That's my 2 cents.
BTW, you should focus on the potential of the Freespace engine, since most people will inevitably associate it with the original game.
The SCP along with the extremely streamlined thing FRED turns into has a wast potential in any space fighter/space battle simulation.
The late Star Trek models, the Starforce mod, the TBP or the Star Wars Mod are all evidence of this.
FS_SCP is a lot more than a game brought up to date - it's an engine with a complete set of modding tools prepared for anyone to build and ship a game of their imagination.
That's my 2 cents on the issue.
-
I agree, I think you should concentrate on interviewing the big mods, the ones that are doing new stuff (like, for instance, Star Force, Inferno, StarTrek, TBP, [maybe] NTEOP), and show people that Freespace isn't just Freespace anymore, it's a lot more than that.

Thought you needed help conducting interviews. :)

Ahhh, I see :)
I'll pop down there and ask some questions :)
