Title: Model Sizes...
Post by: jdjtcagle on May 20, 2004, 04:53:26 pm
In my campaign I going through the models and resizing em to what they are supposed to be, but I don't no where to where to start.  I know they are 20x off the size they are supposed to be, but where do I change it??
Thanks :)

no no no, you can't just change the models and speeds, the problem goes deeper than that. It has to do with how FS2 calculates all of its units (meters)

Why not??? It's not changing anything in the original Fs2. So it will only be in my mod, that way I can design it the way I want it

It's like a regular ship being put into Freespace except it's a little bigger and faster. :)
Why do think it won't work??

it's _very_ hard to control a vessel moving at 1270 m/s for one thing, and for another, I don't know how the AI will react to it's small environment it's used to being even smaller. I expect alot of rammage.

This is so pathetic. Why can't people understand that the size IS CORRECT in FS2.

If you double the size and speeds you have EXACTLY THE SAME looks as before.

It would of been cool, to look at a destroyer how it was ment to be "as a city in the sky" :D

Cities have more 'bits' in them ;)

I've always loved the scenes in Starwars where you are dodging across the surface weaving under pipes, through tunnels over the Deathstars surface.

It would be great to be able to get the same experience skimming over the larger ships in FS2. Alas, at the moment, it would probably involve trying to dislodge your wingman who has got halfway through a tunnel and decided he wants to fly straight upwards for some unknown reason ;)

The Lucifer was about the size of Rhode Island, which would be cool if it felt like Rhode Island

With better textures they look bigger, but I think that's not what has to be fixed.
It's a perspective issue I think.

For gods sake just change your FOV to 0.39 or smaller and everything will look bigger.

I don't want a hunting scope displaying freespace for me :p
Seriously I'm through here

I can't really blame jd for wanting the cap ships to scale with the fighters and the view out of your own cockpit to scale with the pilot that should be in it.

Everything, even the fighters, looks smaller than the size they're listed as being and changing the FOV won't fix that correctly

If you mean MY hw2 mod beta i can assure you the models are big enought, no, they are already 2x the size they are supposed to be, the battlecruiser being 2000 meters long instead of the correct 1000m, and the speed are all are derivate from the original hw2 values but scaled down to fit fs2 standards.

Nothing released to the public yet, and more alpha than beta...

For info look in the "Apocalypse Project" forum

Well, theres a problem with the FOV.

The ONLY setting the perspective is visually correct is indeed around 0.39. Anything larger will give you stretching distortion at your screen edges, anything lower a squashing distortion.

So you see, you don't really have that much of an influence with the FOV, as you can move it in a range of maybe 0.2.

How do you actually change your FOV?

Command line, -fov [number] IIRC.  It isn't perfect, but it works much better than simply scaling the units.  We've had this discussion before, it isn't a model problem or a rendering problem but a feature of vanilla FS that's nearly impossible to fix.  I think the current FOV, while making everything look small, makes perfect sense as FS2 does not support a joystick hat to look around.

Stratcomm, you CAN look around using the joystick hat, but you can only switch between the views, not smoothly rotate like IL-2 or the like.
