JMS announced (http://www.jmsnews.com/msg.aspx?id=1-17099) yesterday evening that Richard Biggs, aka Dr Franklin, died unexpectedly on Saturday:
I was awakened today with several phone calls from cast members and Doug to pass along the terrible news that this morning, Richard Biggs passed away.
We're still gathering information, so take none of this as firm word, but what seems to have happened, happened quickly. He woke up, got up out of bed...and went down. The paramedics who showed up suggested it was either an aneurysm or a massive stroke.
His family members have been informed, and all of the the cast have, as far as we can determine, also been informed.
This is a terrible loss for all of us. Richard was a consummate professional but more than that he was an honorable, stand-up guy. If he gave you his word on something, you never had to wonder about it afterward. He was always helpful and supportive of all the cast, even those who only came in for one episode, always with a ready smile and determined to do whatever it took to make the scene work. He was, quite simply, a terrific guy, and everyone here is just devastated at the news.
More word as this develops. We may try to have some kind of fund raiser to help give whatever assistance may be helpful for his kids.
We all miss him terribly.

Oh hell.....:(
How old was Richard? Whatever his age was, he was too young to go......
-
That's terrible, terrible news :(

43 years. Saying he was too young to die, is like saying Stephen Hawking is a somewhat bright physichist.

"No. It's not. Death never is" - Franklin, All Alone in The Night
This is truely a sad loss. B5 being my favorite show, and each of the cast being as you could say "TV Heros" to me, well...
"From the stars we came, into the stars we return. From now until the end of time."

Hunt Smacker, boy is that quote a little ironic! :)
I must say that Richard's portrayal of Franklin was superb. He brought the character alive and gave him a personality, which was always there even when the character was fighting against the stims addiction. A fine performance by a wonderful actor.

Agreed, this sucks...:(
He was way too young to pass away already, and he was a damn good actor :(

I haven't checked this section in a while and to see this now I am stunned...
Not only is this the tragic loss of a decent human being, but one who provided an excellent portrayal of a person of the future committed to helping people but needing help himself.
My grandmother had a similar type of passing in the early 80's and the only condolence was it was very quick.
My prayers and best wishes go out to his family and the rest of the cast and crew of that beloved show.

Damn :(

My condolences to his family...he was a great actor. Sounds like he was a great guy too. I always liked what he did...brought conviction to his character.
A shame, a real shame.

JMS is upto something B5 related. Possibly even a movie. He's playing his cards close to his chest though.
