Title: new Bad Religion - Los Angeles is Burning
Post by: Rictor on May 24, 2004, 01:10:21 pm
...is amazing. Just freaking awesome. no better way to put it.

Bad Religion, one of the most refined punk bands in the world, is out with a new album, The Empire Strikes First. This isn't out in stores until June, but they have released one of the songs Los Angeles is Burning on I Tunes, and so it has spread across the Internet. You can probably find the entire album at the usual disreputable places.

My advice to you, whether you've never heard of Bad Religion or whether you're a long time fan, is to get this song (and later, the album) any way you can.

This is not what most people think punk is. Its very melodic and stirring, as opposed to loud, fast and angry. These guys have been around for a long time, so their sound has evolved into a more....refined is the word I would use, type of punk. So, if you're not into punk becuase it too fast and pissed-off, this will serve you nicely.

get the song now fools, trust me on this one.

If it's not pissed off, it's not punk.

LOL Well, I actually agree with 01010 on that, but I'll have a look around in perfectly legal and above board areas and see if I can't get a listen of what they are like, the way you descrive them, they sound a little bit 'Stone Temple Pilots', which can never be bad ;)

Damn, I was hoping to open up a bit of debate on that but you had to just agree with me. :)

But yeah, punk is, always has been and always will be attitude. Music, image, all that bull**** is nothing without the attitude.

hehehe Well, my idea of punk is what I used to listen to when I was in the band, with such lovely names as 'Die Toten Hosen', which I think translate to 'The Tight Trousers', though I may very well be wrong, Butthole Surfers and Stormtroopers of Death.
Though I won't admit to liking it all, it was about as raw Punk as you could get :)

101010, I agree with you generally, but Bad Religion are the ****ing godfathers of modern punk. Its not all about Oi! Oi! Oi!, punk is an attitude, not how loud a particular band screams.

It is still punk, to be sure. I personally like the refined sound. Different bands have different styles, and Bad Religion has always been (as far back as I can remember) sort of more melodic than someone like Rancid or Against All Authority.

just listen to the damn song :D:D

I hate punk.  I really do, it inspires pussy 'emo kids' to cut themselves, tell others, and steal *****es that should rightfully belong to us, the classic metal-heads.

But, its a fad.  Here today, suicide tomorrow, its how they all turn out.  And a very good point was brought to my attention the other night, wasnt punk music bred on anti-commerialism?  Why then, would the 'godfathers of punk' bow to the very thing that true punk was designed to avoid?

No, see thats this bull**** new punk thats been around the last few years.
Bad Religion has been around since the early 80s.

"Hear It" is a good one to download to get a good idea of what they're like. Or 20th Century Digital Boy.. Or Cease... Hell, they have tons of good ones.

Lyrics for Hear It
Quote
ike a morning crow and his unwelcome song
Or a worn-out broken record that keeps skipping along
Mountains of instructions you keep piling on me
Resound like a cacophonous symphony
But I don't wanna hear it anymore
Priests and politicians pretend they're your friend
And police speak to you like you're a child again
Blanket statements cover you like a rug
And thet tell me maybe I'm acting a little too smug
But I don't wanna hear it anymore
Every day we hear the secrets of life
Reduced to cheap jokes, poetry, and friendly advice
They'd rather see us all pusillanimous
Absorbent in their chorus of correctness
But I don't wanna hear it anymore

err, demon, you've got no idea what you're talking about. I dislike emo in all its forms, but saying that there is no real punk any more is absurd. The old guard, and a few guys from the new guard are churning out great punk, just like they always have. A few skater kids and emos can do what they like, it doesn't reflect on the rest of the punk music scene.

some of my BR faves include Supersonic, 21st Century Digital Boy, New America, You've got a Chance and many more. The fact that Greg Gaffin (lead singer) is one of the smartest mofos in music today only makes the cake sweeter. While Avril is busy with her image consultant, BR are writing some of the most thought-out and intelligent songs that I have heard. Check their website, under the "essays" heading to see what I mean.
