Hey, just wondering if any1 here can help with this.
I'm trying to set up a simple network b/w a mates computer and my own.
I'm using a crossover cable to connect the two XP Pro machines together, and physically everything seems ok.
This has worked many times before on other friends computers without a hitch so it kind of has me baffled.
This computer of his is new, it has a Gigabit Lan connection and a Normal connection on the back of the computer. So far both produce the same problem for me. It shouldnt matter really but I'm using the 10/100 to be safe. So it has 2 Local Area Connections and one 1394 Connection.
On both computers I've enabled NetBIOS in the TCP/IP protocol under the WINS tab in the advanced box on the connections. They both are in the workgroup 'HOME'. IP's are on auto for now.
Here is where it gets strange:
I can detect his computer 'dopey' in my network places, yet when I try to access it I get a 'You may not have the correct permissions to access this' message.
Yet the other computer cannot detect mine at all.
I've tried re-installing the drivers etc. but I'm running low on ideas. The Microsoft support page, and other technical forums have been of little use so far... :(
I'm not sure what it requires, maybe a bridge between the 1394 connection or something? ergh. I dunno.
If anyone has any idea or has had this problem in the past, some help would be very much appreciated.

you did the whole set up the network thing on his machine too right?
and have you set the permissions on his mahine to let you access his hard drive and stuff?

yeh tried the wizards etc. and yeh, permissions are all set.
I can't really see why its not working... :(

Actually, that's a common problem.
Just go and play games, I bet if works as long as neither of you have any firewalls installed.
Make sure you both have at least one shared folder, then access each other's computers via their IP address. \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\Shared for example. Not required for anything else except sharing your files.

Tried that too. And games don't pick each other up.... I'm starting to think its something to do with the drivers on the other computer...

Try assigning the IPs on both computers yourself.
192.168.000.000 & 192.168.000.001
That at least eliminates the possibility that windows is doing something stupid with the autoconfig.

if both pc's are running XP than it is just a matter of making sure of two things.
a) make sure both have an IP in the same subnet range
b) enable 'simple filesharing' on both XP machines...
to enable 'simple file sharing' go to folder options, it is one of the checkmark options on the second tabpage...
(the fact that both computers need a properly installed and configured NIC goes without saying ofcourse)

If you have verified that both NICs are installed correctly and are operating correctly, try this:
Go into the Hardware Manager and remove all the network adapters and force Windows to redetect them. On your friend's machine make sure that the NIC you're connecting to is the first one installed. Then set the TCP/IP to the following:
Computer 1:
IP set to 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
Computer 2:
IP to 192.168.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0
DO NOT turn on any extra stuff, TCP/IP is all you need NetBIOS sucks[Cheney-voice]BIG TIME![/Cheney-voice].
If that doesn't work, there is a hardware issue.

the "1394" link is firewire. if you have a firewire cable, you can connect the two computer together fairly easily.
sounds like you have it set up right, if you can see each other. now in order to actually ACCESS what files he has 'shared' do this:
START --> SETTINGS --> CONTROL PANEL --> ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS --> COMPUTER MANAGEMENT --> LOCAL USERS AND GROUPS (on the left side) --> USERS
now you'll see a list of users. enable the "guest" account. set a password on it too. also on the folders he's got "shared" make sure that you have full permission to access them. i.e. right click, "sharing", and check your settings. that might work. if it doesn't, let me know exactly what it says and i'll try to help you further :)

Here is a very simple network layout of my home network.
My comp is winxp pro the rest are all win98 work stations placed in a workgroup called "home". Added fixed IP addresses to them to make life abit easyer and to prevent IP conflicts.
all cables and NICS are 10/100 capable,

thanx for the help guys.
got it working after much delema.
Turns out I forgot to install the ipx protocol on the other computers LAN as well. After that and a few tweaks to the authentication tabs I got it working.
Bloody thing was really starting to irritate me.

meh. and i was actually going to say: "Be sure that you have the same protocols running on both machines" :-p
