Title: H2O.... Water. Plain, Simple, Water.... Bottled??
Post by: Sandwich on June 16, 2004, 09:51:23 am
Ok, so bottled water is common. Brings to mind words like "pure", "fresh", "crystal", etc. But, c'mon - for real! Bottled water?!? It's..... WATER!

And the big companies know it, too. After all, did you ever realize what Evian (http://www.evian.com/), a major "producer of mineral water from the French Alps" - really means?

Spell it backwards. :D

Well, water from different locations contain different mineral compositions. Some people can taste the difference.

I myself have gone to Brazil on a missions trip and I got sick from the water that was available. Luckily they had bottled water though.

But for all intents and purposes, buying bottled water is entirely stupid unless you're going to another continent. Especially if you have your own water filter.

You came here... and you drank water from a tap?

* points and laughs *

:p

Sometimes bottled water is a necessity. Some filters work, but most don't do much.

I, for one, can taste a difference between tap water and Evian.

Not 50p worth of difference, but a difference nonetheless.

Yeah. Sometimes you just feel like water - it's always colder than the stuff that comes out of the tap, and at least you know it's healthy. I'm not sure If I can actually taste the difference between brands, but I can definitely taste it between bottled and tap.

In sweden you usually can't. unless it's mineral water.

Yeah, I can taste a tap-bottled difference. As an0n said, generally not worth 70 cents, but since you can't really trust teh school taps, and the fact that it isn't luke-warm, makes you buy the stuff anyway.

[color=66ff00]I'd have to agree with an0n, tap water here tastes like there's 'crap' in it. naivE tastes relatively fresh by comparison and from what I've read it is actually spring water.

Still nothing beats Ballygowan water, it's proper H2O.

This one time in band camp....ok, it wasn't band camp, but it was camp. Anyway, it was in Hungary, and they told us not to drink the tap water, cause it was brown, which is not a natural colour for water to be. They had a big cooler with bottled water.

But normally, I'm of the opinion that tap water is just fine. I drink it all the time. The fact that these companies are able to convinve a large number of people to shell out $1.50 for WATER, is a testament to the power of marketing. I'm sure there is some yuppie code, as to which water is richer in Vitamin Z, so if you're cought with the wrong water bottle, you'll be ostraziced by your elitist friends.

I can't convince my family that buying bottled water is essentially throwing money away. We already have a Brita filter, which I would imagine fills the "pure, cold water" department. I can taste a difference, but its just not something I'm willing to spend money on.

actually, our tapwater here is pretty clean.. you can tell the difference.. (i.e the slight metallic taste from the pipes)

but the bottled water i buy is just an el-cheapo brand that costs me about a third of evian or some ****e like that.

i mean.. it's... water, the fact that it comes in a bottle is the only real difference..

remember that fubar over coca-cola's bottled "spring" water? :p

Bottled water can be justified if you live in a city, where they put all sorts of chemicals into the stuff to make it "safe to drink".  Truth be told, the only reason it's justified then is that the stuff in "tap", i.e. city, water tastes horrid by comparison.  I personally get my water out of a well, and it's plenty cold and pure to suit my tastes.  It's the best stuff I've had bar none, and that includes the yuppy bottled water too.

I've lived in three differnt buildings in two different cities, and each had a distinctive taste to the water. Mineral water is distinctive as well, perhaps for the abscence of the chlorine they favour round these parts. Couldn't tell two brands apart, though.

Why did you start this thread Sarnie? Is bottled mineral water a new phenomenon over there?

If you chill tapwater, and bottled mineral water, then there's no real difference in 'taste'.  Because i did this to me dad (refilled a mineral water bottle with tap water without telling him), and he never noticed.  And he was working for a mineral water company at the time.

My parents shelled out for one of these (http://www.rainsoft.com/products/pr_amazon.html) monstrosities.  I have to say, after drinking water from this thing and then having to go back to unfiltered city water... I couldn't do it.  It just tasted awful.  The only trick is you have to buy salt to go into the filtration for it to clean itself.

Have we become so spoiled as to expect our water to taste good? I mean, its water. It is defined as "a tasteless, colourless liquid". I have a Brita water filter and about the only difference that I notice is that the water is cold, on account of being kept in the fridge. When more than a billion, thats billion with a B folks, people go without safe drinking water, everyday, I just can't bring myself to care about trace amounts of flouride or whatever in my water.

Here too. Tap water still tastes like crap whereas bottled water is at least 'drinkable'.

It's not (only) a good quality what makes a good water. It's the taste.

Seriously, tap water tastes so bad here, I can't imagine anyone pretending to drink it.

You know it's not distilled/pure water. Right?

You would not get anything from drinking that. It's NOT H20. Its H20 with a LOT of stuff in it.

Well absolutly pure water is tastless, so bottling company's actually put 'flavoring' (basicly just salt and a couple other minerals) in the water. ;)

I have lived in a place in Florida where we had well water for drinking. Well, it'd be all fine and goo, since Florida has some of the best water around, but no... Our home had to be built above a Sulphur deposit. The water was unbearable. We had to use the refridgerated, filtered water that was piped through the fridge for drinking and cooking. The water for washing and showering stunk so bad...

Glad to have moved.  On another note, however, the place I lived before then, Zephyrhills, Florida, claims to have the purest water in the state, and even bottle it to sell to the rest of the country...

ok enough with the flashy thing.

I can really tell a difference between bottled water and tap water.  I live in the middle of downtown in an apartment and when I drink the tap water it gives me a headache.  I try not to drink that water if I can help it.

And when I'm cooking something w/ water, I'll use the big jug of spring water I buy from the supermarket.

I think I should start a company that creates pure, molecular water with no contaminants other than the container.

A big tank 'o hydrogen, a tank 'o oxygen, a bunch of fancy-schmancy containers and mix it all together.

Then sell it for a premium :)

The only water I buy is the stuff that comes in the 4L jugs. They're actually cheaper than those 600mL Aquafina bottles. The only reason I buy it is because the water here is a grenish brown colour. A combination of dirt and chlorine. It's bad enough to bathe in the stuff. I got soap in my eye the other day, and rinsing it out with water caused it to burn more.

Windsor's source of water is the Avon River. A very muddy river. Doesn't matter how much of it they filter out, some of it still gets through.

IME, in some vity, it's better to drink bottled water, seeing that filter aren't always that good. Lucky me, I live near Evian, and the public source just in front of Evian social siege is free :)
It's funny to see just how many people come in a day to fill their bottle. Most of them come with at least 10 1.5l sized bottle. Only disadvantage is that it's a small source, you gotta wait 1 minute for a bottle to be filled.
