I just accidentally Alt-Tabbed out of FS2, and when I shifted back, my HUD was gone!
I made sure to hit Shift-D, thinking maybe it had just been toggled off, but it didn't do anything. I also lost missile targetting, and I know this because I'm fairly sure I had a target lock on some bombers in front of me (it's kind of hard to tell without a targetting box). I still had flight controls and I could fire weapons, but no targetting box. I also had no comms.
Interestingly, my FPS meter was also still there.

wow usualy that makes the game crash

Alt-tab usually works for me.. but I don't think the game likes it at all... it usually runs less smoothly once I've alt-tabbed.

It usually works for me, too.
That is the *only* time I've seen that. My FS2 experience has gone back to normal since.

It's happened again.
This time, I figured something out. It's flipping the HUD display off, whatever else it's doing. I misread the keyboard shortcut, so that didn't work last time. This time it did, and it restored the targeting code.
I'm not triggering the shortcut.
This seems to happen only when I'm in the process of doing two things: afterburning away from a supply ship, while reengaging the speed auto-match. Alt-Tab. The addition of the M into that seems to trigger the HUD. I have no idea why this is.

Alt-Tab usually causes it to crash for me in SP, but surpisingly it doesn't crash that often when I alt-tab out (or got forced out by some annoying popup) in MP.

Try a spyware removal tool for the popups.
If you have already, try another one.
