Title: Depressed at lack of Good Games
Post by: Knight Templar on June 18, 2004, 02:11:49 pm
Okay, so I felt like distracting myself and playing a fun game this morning. I go to look at my games folder... and nothing really appeals to me. I think "hrm... that's odd. I haven't felt this way in a while." So I go look at my game shelf, and start trying to want to play some games to no avail.

Call of Duty: More or less beat all the fun missions on the hardest difficulty. I guess I could play online, but I might as well play Halo.

Halo: I've probably played 10 hours of Halo online (with my new net connection- get <100 pings all day. I'm rather burnt out for the time being.

Splinter Cell (Pandora Tommarrow): I'm still in Jerusalem, but the game just doesn't seem all that great. You sneak behind somebody with either a mixture of going slow, crouching, or staying in the dark. They never see you, you hit them, wee, they're dead. It got so tedious and repetitave that I thought for a while I could win any fight in real life if I could crouch-sneak behind someone and bop them in the back of the head with my elbow. The original Splinter Cell was pretty sweet, yet for some reason, I'm just not feeling it on this one.

KOTOR: Beat it. Can't really bring myself to spend another 40 hours playing it once through again, especially since I know how it ends more or less.

Star Wars Galaxies: Ehh.. I got tired of the basic heart of the game. Kill moderately hard monsters for 3 days so you can level up one weapon skill. Leavel up three weapon skills and you can be a master specialist in that field of weapons, which lets you kill slightly bigger monsters. Kill the slightly bigger monsters for two weeks to level up a specific weapon to master. Yay, now you can kill semi-big monsters. Go out and try to kill bigger monsters. Die trying or encounter a glitch that doesn't let you or won't let you finish your mission.

Sure I could move into non-killing professions, but then you don't get to explore anywhere and you basically do the same thing, just in a different context. Bleh. I'm glad I'm not paying for this.

Warcraft III / Frozen Throne: I love thinking about playing WC3, but when I actually try to go play it, it doesn't seem that fun. I think it's cause some of the missions seemed genuinely hard/tedious.. especially because of the low unit cap. Maybe I'll play online with somebody though.

NOLF2: I haven't played it yet... but... I don't know. Just don't feel like it. Maybe I should.

LOTR: ROTK: BLeh, I didn't know it was going to be a side-scrolling action game. I'm glad it was a gift.

GTA3/GTA:VC : No reason to play GTA 3 when you have VC. And I've bought and done all the missions I think I could find in VC. There's the Car Dealership missions... but I can't find the race track.

Mafia: Great game, but I beat it. Don't know if I want to play it again. The City isn't all that interactive, even in the story.

FS2: Well... I'm trying to distract myself *from* FS2.

FS1: I could play it over again... hrm...

Total Annihilation: AI isn't tough enough.

CnC General: Meh. Tried the blitzkrieg mod, but it basically comes down to who gets the most higher tier level tanks first. Meh.

Ghost Recon: Meh. Single player = boring.

Battlefield 1942: Might as well play Halo.

X-Wing Alliance: Might as well play FS.

AoE2/Exp: Meh. Whole rock-paper-scissors thing sucks. And guard towers don't hit anything, which makes base defense a *****.

Star Trek Armada: Good game, but limited.

Star Trek Armada 2: Unlimited, but ****ty game.

---------

So I'm more or less left with playing the Starcraft campaigns, which don't sound that bad, or maybe NOLF2. Or I could just go work on FS stuff like a good little boy...

What I really need though, are ideas for new games to buy. I get PC gamer, but off the top of my head, I can't think of any good games out there that I don't have. I'll probably by IL-2 Strumovik soon though.

NOLF2 is very good, but once you've played it through once there's little impetus to do it again.

Well I have yet to play it once, so maybe I should do that. Do I need to have played NOLF1 to know what's going on?

Snipes: Well, my amount of games ins't in question. I have oodles more PC games in drawers, that I haven't even mentioned because thet aren't even up there. Games like Galactic Battlegrounds and... uh.. Nightfire.

hrmm... maybe this is the time I should finally learn how to play Homeworld...

I got Rise of Nations and it's pretty cool, if your in to a Civ 3, Empire Earth and Medieval : Total War mixture...

Umm... When this happens I usually go back in time with a Jurassic Park or Mario ROM. Then get bored wtih that and back to Freespace or something...

I'll contemplate it. Although I'm sort of leaning torward doing that FS2 stuff now. Probably do it tommarrow.

Which reminds me... I also got Tiberian Dawn to work with XP. I'm sort of stuck on this one Nod mission though (The one where you have to assault the GDI base with the Orcas) and I'm on the GDI mission in Greece, where you land on the beach with a few grenadiers and a MCV and you immeadiately get shot at by turrets and tanks chase you :doubt:

JDT: I'm waiting for Total War: Rome to come out. That'll be sweet. I do also have an N64, so I could play Rogue Squadron or Ocarina of Time.. or go further back to SNES and play some Mario... or Mario RPG ;7

try playing Star Trek Armada 2 online, you can have some excellent games on it. I honestly think its the best unmodified game I have, and I haven't gotten fed up with the multiplayer since I started online.

EDIT, download the Star Wars Fleet Command total modification for Armada2 if you feel you need a new game. It dosen't cost anything and is a lot of fun.

I'm having the same problem with games atm. I've had to go back to completing games I've done before, but things like CoD and DX2 can be finished in a day.

I'm hoping Ground Control 2 will live up to my expectations.

Well, Homeworld spends a lot of time installed, FS2 is always there, and I also have Diablo 2 installed at the moment.

I have Dungeon Keeper 2 next to my computer and am sorely tempted, older games just run sooo smooth on new video cards ;)

Well, I find myself in the same situation as you KT, but I think I can recommend the following.

The Longest Journey (adventure, slow in the beggining but as soon as you progress you will find yourself loving the game)
FarCry (nuff said)
Homeworld (any, ANY of them, but some people don't like Cataclysm for some reason :doubt: )
Universal Combat (simulation, imagine a mix of X2's graphics with Freelancer gameplay AND Battlefield's gameplay, this is a love or hate game, you have been warned :nervous: )
etc...

Peter: Star Trek Armada 2 annoys me. I hate how the ships all die in a matter of seconds. Battles only last a few seconds, because ships explode almost as soon as their shields go down, and that only takes a few hits for most ships. It's too much like an episode out of DS9 cool looking, but ****ty to play. Also, there's a lot of ships that appear to do more or less the same thing. One might be slightly stronger than the other, but I can't tell because they die so fast. I never had that problem in Armada 1. Maybe If I could find a mod that fixed this....

Ghostavo: oooh.. I have a Farcry demo. Maybe I'll try that out.

well, If you haven't played Homeworld yet then do it! HW1 and HW:C are good, HW2 is good gameplay wise but the story is weird IMHO. Also, if you've got the system for it, Far Cry rocks. A lot.

your right, but remember that A2 is just based on star trek. It is at the end of the day a real time strategy game and not meant to be a realistic representation of star trek. A2 does have twice as many ships per side as A1 did, so yes there are more than three combat ships per side.

I would heavily reccommend the Star Wars Fleet Command total conversion to anybody. You don't even need the full game as you can apply the mod to the demo and it will still work.

It totally removes Star Trek from the game and adds the Imperial Remmant and the New Republic. This mod is far more fun in a skirmish than plain A2. You have everything from the TIE fighter to the Super Star Destroyer and pretty much every ship in between that has been mentioned in a book or game. Its worth downloading just to watch capital ship fights, Star Destroyers blast away with its 30 lasers and then follow up with there ion cannons, it looks so different to A2 where even the most powerfull ship has one phaser and one torpedo that its unbeleivable.

yeah, I get that feeling alot. There are tons of new games I would like to play, but my compy ain't up for it, so I'm stuck with relatively old games.

Right now, I'm playing through Jedi Academy, after that I'll play some Gish. After that, well its either reinstall Homeworld Cataclysm or check what SN has to offer.

I installed Battlezone some days ago, got the latest patch and some extra art and I'm having the most fun in years of computer gaming! The graphics, sounds, atmosphere and story are beyond top-notch for a game from 1998, the suspension-of-disbelief-level is on par with FS2.

(If you don't know Battlezone it is a hovertank action/strategy game, like a Halo/Starcraft crossover)

Someone mentioned The Longest Journey. There's a sequel in production, called Dreamfall.

If you play starcraft without using cheats, each of the levels can take an eternity to beat. Dues Ex 1 took me a long time (relatively) to beat it. There's always half-life, Elite Force 1, Elite Force 2, and all the Medal of Honor games. All of them are good. Elite Force is a bit different from other FPS's.

Well.. it depends on which levels really. I think WC3 is worse in the time-to-beat without cheats department though.

Mmmm, Civ3 is fun.

Just started playing it two days ago.  My Egyptian (Communist) Empire managed to convince everyone to vote me as leader of the U.N. (diplomatic victory, imagine, the world was willing to let a communist leader rule over them XD).

And all I had to do was give away all my technology, luxuries and resources to everyone (not too hard when there's only two nations left, they managed to kill each other while I busied myself pushing along the research tree) one turn before I finished building the U.N.  Foolish Germans and Japanese, so easy to manipulate.

BTW, is the Play the World and Conquests expansions worth getting?  Besides new units, is there anything else different?

Ever since MOO3 came out, I've come to accept that I won't be buying any more games for a long time to come.  (And yes, I do enjoy MOO3.  Would be even better if they'd fix the multiplayer bugs, but alas...)

Halo was good fun on heroic (no, I didn't buy it, my brother did), and that's basically my FPS allotment for the next decade since I'm not into FPS.  (They're all the same to me gameplay-wise, not to mention each successive generation just puts more strain on the old vidcard without any substantial improvement in enjoyability.)

I have SimCity 4 on the shelf (bought for me by a certain someone who owed me a favour), and I haven't tried it successfully yet.  (It wasn't until recently that I figured out the problem with my Radeon 9600 SE that caused Generals and Warcraft to fritz.)  But that could be a way out.

Strangely enough, the games keeping me going right now are from the good ol' days of DOS.  Comparatively bad graphics, but they have it where it counts.  When in doubt, just DOS it!

Mmh, warcraft3. It evolved surprisingly like Tiberian sun. The original game was good, but somehow disapointing, then the extension changed it to a kickass game. Altho I still have no thrill at playing undeads ( which is why I still haven't completed  tFT, since I've reached the undead campaign I do something like a mission every month, so it kindda drags on :p )

Play NOLF2 NOW. It's great.

Others you might want to look at:

Uplink - strange hacking game made by a couple of blokes in their spare time. www.introversion.co.uk

Battlezone 2 - ****ing awesome tactical strategy game (unit and resource management, but you pilot the vehicles). Might be tricky to find it though...

Giants: Citizen Kabuto - very strange, very good. 5 quid in most bargain bin sections.

Hope that gives you some ideas. :)
