Which FreeSpace has the best ending?
I mean which FreeSpace has the best end mission, destroying the Lucifer in subspace or escaping the Capella supernova?
Personally, I think FreeSpace 1 has the best ending because for the first time you play it is the first time you see inside subspace and well, it's intense.
-
I'd say FS2. FS1 is great but it's a bit more derivative. When I started playing FS1 I just knew that the shivans would be defeated by the end of the game. With FS2 I thought something similar until the 80 saths popped up. I loved that the game ended with humanity running with their tails between their legs.
-
Fs2 had a good ending...after i heard snipes say 7th santhas i knew something was goin down....just didn't know what...
-
Freespace 2, because Petrarch's monologue is worlds better (Pun intended :p) than that weird, Terminatorish, Alpha 1 monologue.
-
I way preferred FS1, b ut I played both games without cutscenes at first, and even without voice. FS1 was just a bit more, well, final. FS2 felt too much like an open end, and it was too possible to loose the mission but still win the game.
-
I like the Intro and Outtro Video in Freespace:The Great War. The Story in FS2 is great, but i don't like the endling of FS2.

Forgot to mention that :) Robert Loggia does a great job there.
-
Freespace 1. The first time you get to fly inside Subspace, and take out the Lucifer. Funnily, this mission is one of the easiest in the whole campaign (on medium).
-
I think FS1 had the better ending. The ending of FS2 was rather unsatisfying.
FS1 had the better athmosphere. Is was somehow more mysterious. :shaking:
-
FREESPACE 1!
-
Both are good.
Actually, I feel that FS1 actually leaves more questions in the story compared to the one in FS2.
In FS1, all you know you have destroyed Lucifier and saved Earth. But what of the millions of human colonists beyond Sol star system? Are they doomed? What about the Vasudans? After all, the Shivans are still perfectly capable of offensive operations without the Lucifer.
Then FS2 came alone and said the shivans fell apart after the loss of the Lucifer. I must admit it allows for "new toys" like beam cannons and flak guns.
-
I go with "both good". Though FS1 has a much more atmospheric feeling... you know you have to stop the Luci. or humanity is doomed.

Well, there was Silent Threat (for what it was worth).

Fs1 all the way!
-
"DIVE DIVE DIVE!!! HIT YOUR THRUSTERS PILOT!!!"
That should say it all :)
-
Fs1 did have good ending but FREESPACE 2 is Still better
-
When I first finished FS2, I felt the plot was unfinished.
FS2 ended so suddenly.

It's 'Burners', not thrusters, and FS1 was alot better anyway. So :p
-
... 0wned.
But why still discuss, we're winning 11:4 anyway :D
-
Also, FS1 Vasudan Translators rocked alot more than the lamer FS2 ones. The Terrans must have made the second generation, and decided the Vasudans needed to sound more alien...
-
FS1 by a ****in' mile.
-
Don't tel me you don't already know my vote... :D
If you don't, I'll hit you...

;7
That's funny.
Translator Developer:"You know, vasudans are aliens, so lets correct our past mistake and make them sound more alien, hehe..."
"Damn, that's technical revolution."
-
...and then, in the FSSCP, Microsoft Speech was implemented so even the humans sound alien. Yes, it's all a massive conspiracy :p
Besides, this is about the endings...

Hate to sound like the FS-geek on this one, but the first translators were made by the Vassy's... :p

Both were good. But FS1 failed to make me believe that Earth was doomed. The last missions of FS2 just sucked me in and wouldn't let go, there was a feeling of immense pressure in the last mission that wasn't present in FS1 except for maybe when you had to save the hope.
-
For the mission, FS1, because in FS2 you are about as much use as a chocolate teacup in the final mission, whereas in FS1, you really can make all the difference :)
From storyline point of view, FS2 really rapidly turned from a bold step forward into running like hell in the space of about 5 missions, it was the feeling of :wtf: that kept you playing.
-
Silent Threat wins easily
-
:eek2:
Explain?
-
It was the only ending where the story was resolved without any more explaining to do.
Lucifer dies. Earth gets cut off from the GTA, fate of earth is left up in the air
Supernova. Too many questions still remain
Hades dies. you win. end of story
-
I see what you mean...
But, I'm going to stay with Fs1 :)
-
The game had built an aura of invincibility into that ship I was in shock when I saw the Lucifer blow up.

Nah, it's not that easy. You never get to know why the Hades was build. And I don't think the evil GTI was defeated by the destruction of the Hades.
The Addon wasn't that bad after all.

I said they both rocked. FS1 wins hands down for desperation and atmosphere, but as kara pointed out it was relatively predictable. FS2 had me surprised. Disappointed at the abruptness of the end, but dramatically surprised. That counts for something. ;)
-
The surprise is the reason I like the FS2 ending better. When I heard what the shivans were upto I was expecting a Ringworld style "lase the sun" superweapon which you'd take down at the last minute. Capella going supernova completely surprised me as did the fact that the game ended there.
Yeah it feels incomplete but then again so does the ending of Empire Strikes Back and I think that one has the best ending of all the SW movies :) Sometimes an incomplete ending is good.
-
When there is a response to all questions it brings up.
-
FS1, for the fact that the atmosphere is great and you get to see Earth at the end. That little flyby of Fighters/Bombers was pretty nifty. ;)

I'd say that the fact that there was no response is one of the big reasons we all make mods.

 You can always convince me.
-
Freespace2 all the way. Surprised the hell out of me. Nothing beats watching 80 Sathanas supernova a sun, therebye obliterating an entire star system. Nothing.
-
This thread, and reading through a few of the FS1 tables has made me start playing FS1 again. Now all I need is to find a hack for the registry to make the graphics better...

I knew it was burners! I put burners first and it didnt sound right in my head for some reason.
Must have been the 4th beer,
-
the last mission of fs1 was too easy. (hell once i went straight for the node in great hunt and that meant only alpha wing v lucifer lol no ursas or thoths).
the last mission of fs2 was bloody hard especially as i wasn't a very good player at the time and i felt much more desperate ("ARGH END THIS MASSACRE ALPHA 1 WE'VE LOST A GAZILLION TRANSPORTS!") and then suddenly "God Speed Pilot!" (well i guess thats said in both games).
totally off topic but i much preferreed the voice of command in fs2.
-
I'd say FS1 had a greater overall sense of desperation.. in that, as soon as the Lucifer takes down Tombaugh, you are in a constant state of retreat.
But the way the FS2 missions were made, those last few missions felt so insignificant compared to the Sathanas activity.
So, both great!

"USe the port, Luke!" ;)
I really like the end mission of Freespace 2, now. (I used to really dislike it) Especially considering the Malta came over from the Bastion mission with me, I loved that nice touch. :D
-
Not to be harsh, but the FSPort cannot bring the feeling of FS1 back despite it has some great features(shielded Lucifer).
-
Agreed... The port is great, but only for people who don't have FS1... There's just something about playing it in FS1, that makes it better, even if every aspect of it was ported over to FS2...
-
FS2.
Questions keep Freespace alive.
-
FS2. The FS ending level was frustraiting at times, without shields and all that jazz, and idiot squad members, although the disorientation I recieved was great. However, the FS2 ending was this massive and pitched dogfight, and an ending attempt to scramble to the node. I did not loose a SINGLE transport in that level, not one. I made sure I got as many out as possible. By the time we had a few left, command just sits up and says "OMG TEH SUPANOVA OMG RUNZORZ!" and I just jacked engine power to full...
BTW, the addon, SUCKED.

 Ignoring the ones that never reached the node?
-
By the looks of the poll results, I think both truly did rock. ;)
-
But FS1 still has the lead.
