So there I was, stumbling across archive.org when what did I find?
http://web.archive.org/web/20010302040452/ross128.telefragged.com/
Yep! It's Ross128, the first FS site I ever worked on (founded by Inquisitor). Ahh.. the good old days...

Funny.

Looks like VW with the contents list on the left. :p

Take a look at the screenshots on the bottom of this page.
What are those lensflares?
I had a Voodoo3 back then, but never saw something like this.

Edit: Try the Poll on the page.
I tried to vote for 404... Well you'll see it's funny ;)

I wish I would have know what this was all about....
Babel Effect (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babel_effect/)
Twilight (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/twilight/)

Falcon: Shivans, explosions, conspiracies. :p
DaBrain: Early experiments with weapon effects after talking to some Volition folks and Dark (back in the dark ages when everyone was learning how to mod things) to get things like looked like lensflares in the weapon image. Problem is, they looked horrible in anything but a few screenshots.
Performance sucked because I used a very large image and projectile size so it'd look like a projectile followed by a lensflare. No alpha channels so the image was rough (the .jpeg blurs it enough so you don't see that)
However, it looked like a muzzle flash until the lensflare flies off behind the pulse :p It also looked weird when hitting something because the projectile was so big. The third problem was how everything got distorted when looking at it from different angles.
So it was a bad idea, cool at first, but not usable.

I love consipiracies and explosions they make me happy and you know what happens when I get happy :mad2:
Excuse me I have to rest..... :nervous:

Oh... I...ah... yeah :D
I still have fond memories of Ikeya Productions though (my nebula creation off shoot from the Ross 128 website). Back in the old days when changing the colorisation on a nebula could constitute a mod... *sighs*.
-
Good times, good times...
-
Dude, that's so old that I wasn't even around by that time (thus, the page sucks, since it lacks the awesome aura of Stuness)
-
Does anybody have Operation Avatar Demo?
-
Does anyone have Twilight?
-
TWILIGHT was released!?!? :eek2:
-
Apparently...
Go read the forums.
-
*Bump*
So does anybody have them???
-
yey! it's R128! and the FS3 wishlist still works!
-
...oddly enough this is before my time.
I got FS when the VBB was at it's height... and when I learned about fan sites, they merged everything into Volitionwatch... The first one, though.

No, I once asked from Ace if i could release it and He said no.
here is quote from Ace

No. Twilight was pulled due to some serious crash to desktop errors that were not caught during the beta test. When the source code project is further along, I'll do a beta with a slightly tweaked version of Twilight to see if the problems persist.
If not, then it'll be re-released.
-
Uhmm... does it crash with 3.6?
If I'm undertanding correctly... we have a huge? mod/campaign that is complete and isn't released yet!?

Ugh... the SCP never heard about it. :doubt:
If the SCP team had a copy of the campaign, we could find and fix the bugs faster.
That out of the way, does anyone have a copy of the AOB demo? ;)
-
That brings memories, but this is the really sad part:

A reskined Star Destroyer as a Vasudan capital ship? :wtf:
Whoever did this was creative, but I am afraid I do not like it.

Indeed, all undownloadable...

You're too young, that's the problem.

does anyone have Ground FS (thats the purple one, right?) or Freespace Chronicles archived somewhere? Man, those were the days...

So true. You have to realise how advanced Dark was for his time - he made the first FS mod ever, and was always pushing the envelope. Wonder what he's up to now.
-
Talking about Freakspace. Looks like Blackdove already took off the forum links. If you guys want, i'd be glad to host those comics in my server for newbies like me to see.
pls email me the whole thing at (plus other info i need to know like artist, background, date etc.)
tokyo_cab_driver(at)yahoo.co.jp
and I'll make a page with a simple navigation, archives and everything.

In response to the first post: Inq did *tons* of R128 work, but he didn't officially start the site :) I can't remember the name of the guy who did though at the moment.
Anyways as a response to the comments on Twilight and The Babel Effect:
After Twilight was released I got E-Mails about crash bugs, etc. So it was pulled. After trying to figure out the cause and never being able to reproduce it, I decided to do some tweaks to the campaign including new command briefing animations. I talked to Setekh about that but with the things going on in his personal life at the time it was better to drop the idea.
The Babel Effect I was working on, which was going to be the sequel to Twilight and would conclude the plot. There were quite a few problems with getting its various mods to work and converted. (including my first and last modeling efforts)
Most TBE work I wound up loosing after a crash. That included the Vasudan drydock and the Babel Device which I both modeled. Both the original truespace models and the converted files were lost. My uploaded versions were also corrupt :ick:
Twilight I started working on after Crytek dropped the spacesim project they were working on (a long story). If it wasn't for that I probably would have released an FS2 campaign right after FS2 came out, or continued tweaking Cardinal Spear. (which will soon be re-released for FS1/2 as The Vega Engagement)
After TBE dried up, I worked with Orbital Design Studios on business development since D4 was dead thanks to Volition (another long story). I've now been helping IceFire finish up BWO, and I've been finishing the revamped version of Cardinal Spear since Goober asked to convert it over.
Mainly I've been working on other projects, including the cellphone game Rimscape which I've shown some shots of here before.
TBE will never be released, it's a dead project. A re-release of Twilight? Depends. In a few months I might see if some new command animations can be made.
About Dark:
A *very* skilled modeler with a good artistic eye.
If anything, I regret asking him to do stupid stuff like a reskinned Athena, reskinned Anubis, the PVI Karnak, etc. when I should have been doing the missions for *his* campaign instead when I had the chance...
*sigh*
