Title: Lock On: Modern Air Combat
Post by: Unknown Target on June 20, 2004, 12:30:36 pm
Hehe, this game, officially, ROCKS. I just got that GFTi4600 (see another thread for the problems that came with it :D), so I can turn up all the graphics to get something awesome!
The flight model is, of course, amazing, and it's quite a shock to me after just spending most of my time lately in a prop sim.
The gameplay's great, and while there IS a steep learning curve, a couple minutes in weapons training will get you up to speed.

If you were scared away cause of the bugs, try looking at the sim again. They just released a 1.02 patch, and it fixes pretty much all the bugs I ever had, with the exception of some odd shadow glitches on some aircraft, and some occasional freeze-ups (but not that often).

All in all, I'd give it a 93% out of a 100%. A gorgeous, deep sim, but it's hampered by a friendly yet mostly scattered community, and some minor glitches here and there. You can knock off extra points for the lack of a dynamic campaign if you really want to, but when you're used to old-school campaigns like Freespace 2, IL-2, and CFS2 (that's a lot of 2s! :D) then it really doesn't matter.

EDIT: Bit of advice. If you want to fly and listen to music at the same time, use Winamp, not WMP. It seems (to me, at least) that WMP takes up more of the precious memory and CPU power that you need to run this sim.

Picks for flying: Nightwish (especially Nemo, by Nightwish).
AC/DC
Medium-paced techno (vocal dance tracks are a bit too uppity for the single player, I have yet to try multiplayer).

Yeah me and Darkage play it online once in awhile... was hoping to get a whole group of people and maybe do a team vs team type of a deal.

I actually prefer the Russian aircraft over the American, seems like their missiles worked better. The game was made by a russian developer so, hey. :p Though this new patch makes the Amraam better, maybe the F-15 is a better choice.

Got hold of the demo.. but damn are there a lot of buttons. That being the problem, I'm used to the arcade feel of BF1942 - this is new to me!

Ooh, new patch. Lovely. The last patch ****ed up the handling in the training modes. Now I'll finally be able to get started. It's been sat there, unplayable, on my disk for months since I 'bought' it

Hehe, I bought it, and I'm JUST able to play it, thanks to my recent system upgrade.

Anyone up for an online dogfight?

And anyone have any good tracks? I've got a good one of a knife fight, but I haven't gotten around to editing it yet :(

Get some trance off of suprnova and play
I personally don't play with any music

I'd be up for a few games of LOMAC.

I'm still a prop sim guy.  I tried the Lomac demo and it was kind of fun but the controls throw me off a bit.  I'm searching for the trim keys and they are all in different places :D

my favorite is still falcon 4.0.  not for the graphics, but the reality if the flight characteristics.

Just installed it a few days back.... looks good (demo didn't work for some reason).

And FINALLY I managed to configure x45 and all the buttons so that they fit into my world... ... I think :p
