Really.
After many years of Half Life beeing banned from my HD, I decided to reinstall it because a buddy of mine shoed me a lot of cool mods(Natural selection, Global Warfare, and many more). But apparently MP is only possible with STEAM installed now. Now here's the problem: I tried every version of the steam installer(the small standalone file, since I have both HL and all the mods in the newest versions on CD's) but it either tells me that Steam.dll is missing during install, or that it can't connect to any GeneralDirectoryServer. I tried everything listed in the support files on the STEAM site browsed through their help forums(which is filled with threads expressing the evilness of that pest and many nasty words about how the people imagine ways of torturing the developers of STEAM in the most painful ways). I even started my own thread about it, only getting cynic replies from the desillousioned users. So...is there anyone who had similar problems and solved them or knows how to help me?

A-HEM!?

For those who don't know what STEAM is:http://www.steampowered.com/
It's a program needed to play online with any Half Life mod for some time now.

Steam is a *****.
Duh.
Really, I have no idea to solve anything related to steam. I generally just re-install the bastard 5 times in a row. You might try to do a complete de-install, check the registry, de-install HL, re-check the registry, download the latest steam, and only enter the CD key of your HL install.

no, you dont need steam to play MP
i play natural selection MP all the time w/o steam
i use NS 2.7 i think, cuz 3 requires steam.
-
Yeah, but there is a world of difference between 3 beta 4 and 2.7.
-
Ah, the wide world of multiplayer. A place I've only ever been in my dreams. ;)

Steam needs to be killed, not just because of it's poor implementation - but because the avenue it represents is one which we do not want game developers going down
-
Steam was built to protect CD keys online, unfortunately its so safe it wont hardly install.
Since Steam HF sucks.
-
However it does much more than that and offers way much more control
Go to slashdot, dig through the harddrives

[color=66ff00]Yeah, the tinfoil hat squad will scare the bejesus out of you with more info about DRM than you know what to do with.
Have you considered that a system like Steam also frees games designers from the whims of the money centric publishers; who would far prefer that Valve makes a Championship Manager or Tombraider clone than anything innovative or fresh.
True that steam isn't up to scratch at the moment, but it's a pretty young system, you can still play CS and the like over WON anyway.

Steam is the worst way in which to free yourself from a money centric publisher

[color=66ff00]Possibly but it's also a step in the right direction IMHO.

no, the tin foil hate concerns are too justified
