Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't PXO having a *lot* of problems these days?
-
It being down might count as a lot of problems.
Do a search on PXO down or something. AFAIK, the server got damaged while moving, and no-one wants to pay to replace it.
-
When's Inq gonna' set up the FSOpen PXO replacement?
-
damn, i really wanted to play FS2 online, playing against the comp is fine, but I wanna play against real ppl.

Not sure, ASAP, IIRC.

How did you hear about that - and how recently?
-
Something on a Descent board, I think through a link on the SCP forum.
A week ago, 2 tops. It might've been sooner, but my feeling for time is wrecked.
-
PXO is down for good. I wouldn't really expect it to be back.
You guys should really get together with the guys at descentbb.net to work on getting the PXO source released.
-
Kevin Bentley?
he was here few months ago asking if someone would help him
I quote him
Orginally posted by Kevin Bentley
What I want to do is get the original PXO server source cleaned up and ported to run with mysql on linux. It's not a lot of work, but I was hoping to find someone to help out with it. No offers so far though.
-
I happened to try to play on PXO server. The flight exactly took 00:00 minutes.

I KNEW I'd read something about someone other than Kazan working on a PXO replacement :)

Would this allow retail FS2 players to play as well?
If it does, it might be worth it. For the SCP we have a working alternative ready to go up, only waiting for a server.
-
I thought Grass 69r and other people trying to find an FS2 game on line, might like to contact us at www.darkwing-squad.com on our forum, as we are playing Freespace 2 on ip since pxo disappeared down a black hole.....

No. The game would have to be patched. There's some code in FS2 that points to the PXO server - if the server changes, that code is moot.

Would it be possible to redirect that output in some way. Like by editing the host file for instance?

Is there any way at all to give people who currently install FS2, and run Mplayer, a link or ticket to the new server/this community?

I'm sure there is. Volition could set something up so when somebody tries to register a PXO account, a message informs them of a new, 3rd party server.
-
This could be very nice.
What about current PXO pilots, not aware of the SCP?
(I'll ask Inquisitor about setting up the tracker.)
-
The offices that house the PXO servers were being moved, however either they were damaged during this process or there just wasn't enough time to get them moved. AFAIK there is no one willing to put in the extra effort to get them running mainly because they are viewed as "redundant" to Volition now. There is someone over at Outrage who kept things running such as the chat servers during PXO's up-time, but I doubt he can pull any strings to get them servers back.

It seems you did not advertise yourselves very well.
-
You could try and make them aware? I doubt there are too many people who played regularly on PXO who are not aware of this site.
-
Dunno, I played quite a bit some time ago, but almost everyone I flew with was unaware of the SCP. I kept giving them links to HLP, off course, but I doubt many remembered.
-
WildWolf? THE WildWolf? How the hell did I miss this post.
Yes, I am actively trying to get the bloody PXO code, but nobody seems interested in actually committing. Kevin suggested release was imminent but then he vanished. Someone on the DBB was talking to a V employee, but wouldn't give up the information so I could work that contact and get the code.
If ANYONE can get me in touch with them, I can do this in a weekend with the infrastructure I have and we can start either reintegrating it into the SCP and/or do somethign about the retail forlks, but I have hit a wall.
Please, if anyone is in contact with anyone who CAN do somethign about this, give them MY contact information or just have them bloody call me :)

I also directed some people here. I don't know if they ever posted here.
-
yep, i am "the" wildwolf ;)
Kevin Bentley was working on getting PXO code out there, I heard. But he had a baby really recently, so those efforts have been derailed. At least that's what I read. I don't know Kevin too well.
You can try and contact Mark Allender. He is the technical lead at Volition and he would be your best bet on getting something like that going through Volition. Please email me to get his contact info.
[email protected]
I can try and offer Mark my help too if necessary, since Mark loves me with a fiery passion, but I don't know if that will make any difference. But I would like to see PXO code released, especially since it's closed. That would have been my plan all along had I successfully convinced everyone that closing PXO was the right decision :)
-
I'll email you when I get back form the office.
Welcome back, Todd, long time no see ;)
-
Sent.
-
Oh, since you're contacting people at Volition, if you get any reply try to remind them that the Community Links page on the Freespace 2 site is horribly outdated, and that linking to HLP and the SCP, for example, would be damn easy.
;)
-
Might be better to grab the page, edit the source and send it back. The less work you ask someone to do the more likely it is that they'll do it :D
-
Linking only to HLP if simpler than linking to both HLP and the SCP.
-
Hmm... I played on pxo a lot.. and i can confirm what Kasperl said..
Only the vets seem to know about it..

Good idea.
-
Regarding FS multi, it would be of utter importance to get the relevant HLP threads linked from the Volition site (how about a stickied "FSO grand multi" thread at HLP?).
Currently, there's too many steps for new FS ppl to find their way to the sources of information; basically, only a seasoned FS'er will accomplish it like it is now.
We simply can't afford it.
-
I know, but there aren't much ways to fix that, unless we get a link from freespace2.com.
The biggest issue right now is SCP documentation. It's complicated, and it's outdated. We should archive the current manual, and write a new one, using the installer as the basis. I have right now little time, and my writing style isn't all that clear. I'll try, but help is needed. The wiki is easily editable, trust me.
