Title: FS2 Open 3.6 is not working. Help!
Post by: Nazgul9 on June 27, 2004, 05:09:49 pm
Each time i try to run the game it goes back to the desktop. For a fraction of a sec i get to see the startup screen (a pic of vast space, a planet and ships i think) and then bang, back to windows. It's happening both with selected mods as well as without them, in D3D and in OpenGL (when OpenGL is selected i'm first getting an error message before it goes back to windows).

What am i doing wrong?! Please help.

First i installed FreeSpace 2, then the 1.2 patch and then the FS2 Open 3.6 package.

My setup:
Athlon XP @2000Mhz
Radeon 9000Pro 64MB (Catalyst 3.10)
512MB ram
WinXP
etc...

The errorlog (in the FS2 Open install directory) contains the following lines:

fs2_open_3_6 caused an Access Violation in module fs2_open_3_6.exe at 001b:00000000.

upgrade your drivers to version 4.4 (not 4.5 or 4.6)

Are you even supposed to install the 1.2 patch?  I've always ran the 1.0 version from the Underdogs site without any problems.

The 1.2 version patched a few things in root.vp too so it's a good idea.

Nazgul9 : Have you only installed  3.6 or have you installed the .vp files as well? (If you used the installer rather than doing things manually you probably did). In that case try removing any file in your FS2 folder that isn't on this list (Don't worry if you're missing some on that list).

# root_fs2.vp
# sparky_fs2.vp
# sparky_hi_fs2.vp
# stu_fs2.vp
# tango1_fs2.vp
# tango2_fs2.vp
# tango3_fs2.vp
# tangoA_fs2.vp
# tangoB_fs2.vp
# smarty_fs2.vp

Why not 4.5 or 4.6?

Although somehow i think that's not the problem.

@karajorma:

Every file i have in my FS2 game folder is on your list (tangoA and tangoB are missing).

Yes, i've used the installer. Btw, i installed the FS2 Open in a different folder, not in the FS2 game folder. I hope that's allowed.

Any other suggestions? :(

I can upload up tango A and tango B for you, but I don't know if "I can"

EDIT: I could name them Derelict_core or something and when he gets done I can take them down ;7

EDIT2:  What is Tango A and Tango B, Kara?

EDIT3: Nazgul9, have you tried reinstalling Fs2 and then installing the 3.6?
That's how mine got to working right.

Guys, there's a very important clue you missed.

He installed FS2_Open in a different folder from FS2.

There's the problem, right there.  Nazgul9, FS2 and FS2_Open look for the files they need in their directory and subdirectories under it (data for both, and a specififed command line option in FS2_Open can point it somewhere else).  FS2_Open needs to be in the same folder as FS2 retail version.

EDIT: Additional Material

The reason you see an opening screen is that it's in the media .vp files that were installed where you put FS2_Open.  It can find that file.  But the game files are all in the FS2 folder.  Can't use them because it can't find them.

Take their advice on the drivers, as that is not my area of expertise in any way, shape, or form.

They are installed by the HOTU download. Anyone using FS2 Retail won't have them or miss them but since I don't want anyone to mistakenly delete them thinking they are useless I always include them in any list of vp files that are supposed/allowed to be in your FS2 folder.

Yep. Huge alarm bells started ringing in my head as soon as I read that line. :)

Nazgul. Simply copy everying in the directory you installed FS2_open into the Freespace2 folder and everything will be okay with the world again.

If you're worried about making Retail FS2 unplayable don't worry. Moving the media.vp (I can't remember the filename it has now but it's the big VP FS2_Open installed) into a subfolder or out of the Freespace2 folder will allow you to go back to Standard FS2.

Strangely some people do. I think it's just cause they are worried that if FS2_Open doesn't work for them they want a fall back position. Can't say I blame them for wanting one but yeah if FS2_Open works for you there is no reason to go back to using FS2.

I've reinstalled tha FS2_Open package into the FS2 game folder and it seems to work now! Thanks guys for your help! :)

In the next version of the installer they would do good to make it clear that you have to install it there.

As for not wanting to go back, hmm..., to tell you the truth, i'm a bit disappointed of FS2_Open. There are not that many visual improvements as i have thought there would be (Or am i blind?! Could you point out some for me?), plus the game seems to run slower now (longer loading times, occasional stutterings).

Btw, what exactly are shinemaps? I've already read something about them in another thread but am yet unsure of what they do, what visual impact they have. Are they included in the FS2_Open 3.6 package or do i need to download them separately? Also i heard that not all vessels yet got shinemaps, is that true? I wouldn't want to have half the ships with shiny new shinemaps and the other half without them, dull looking.

Again, thank you for participating and for the warm receptions! :)

Have you turned on all the right options and installed the media.vp?

On the features tab of the launcher the greyed out box should say something like this

F:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_3_6.exe -spec -glow -jpgtga -pcx32

If you're missing any of these options it's cause you haven't turned on the extra features. Enable -glowmaps, specular and jpg textures and you'll soon see one hell of a difference.

Post by: kasperl on June 28, 2004, 09:54:20 am
The specmaps are maps that determine how bright, and what colour the reflections are. If they have an alpha channel, that'll determine the envirment map. If there is no alpha channel, the normal specmaps will be used, and if there are no specmaps, the normal map will be loaded as spec.

A ship without spec will look like it is either plastic or molded from glass or something, a ship with it will look like it's metal. All ships have specmaps, but not all have specmaps with alpha. Envirment mapping might look a bit odd, but it is only available in Bob builds anyway, so it won't appear in 3.6.  They are included in the installer, in MV-shine.vp (IIRC, I am not all that up-to-date myself).

Oh, as for the stutterings, could you please copy and paste your commandline in here? Also, what files are in your main folder (the one with teh FS open exe)? Are you using D3D or OGL? What resolution? Are the stutters at any specific point?

Post by: Nazgul9 on June 28, 2004, 10:42:16 am
I've checked everything - except the low memory planet textures - when i was installing.

My command line looks like this: E:\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_3_6.exe -spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -d3dmipmap -cell -phreak -ship_choice_3d -2d_poof -snd_preload

At the moment i'm using D3D, with a resolution of 1024x768 in 32bit (standart). I have the following new vp files in my install folder: mv_core_a.vp, mv_effects.vp, mv_hieffects.vp, mv_hiplanets.vp, mv_models.vp, mv_speffects.vp, mv_textures.vp (@kasperl: no mv_shine.vp - am i missing something?)

I guess i'm blind then, lol. I haven't played FreeSpace2 much prior to the install of the open source add-ons though (just one or two training missions), so maybe that's why i'm not seeing that much difference as i wasn't used to the old version. That's also the reason why i can't tell if the stutterings are at any specific points but i think they are random (i even got one in the options menu).

mv_shine was upgraded to mv_textures shortly after the release of 3.6, so you should be fine.

You should definitely be seeing a difference with -cell, as that is not so much a graphical improvement as it is a difference in the way things appear. Ships should look more like they were lifted out of a comic book with it enabled.

Do you have a screenshot handy?

-cell needs extra art, it's meant to make things look cartoony. Are you sure you want that effect?

Do you mean cell shading, like in the game XIII? Hmm..., it looks nothing like that. It looks about the same with or without -cell. Well, it seems that it's still not working correctly. :(

Here's a pic of how it looks on my comp with all visual enhancements enabled:

As you can see, nothing spectacular (no metallic shining, lo-res textures...). :(

And here's a pic with everything off:

Hmm..., maybe the nebula is a bit more detailed on the previous pic, and what's coming out of the "exhaust pipe" is white instead of blueish, strange... Where are the supposed hi-res textures i ask myself. :(

Glowmaps make the lights on the ships really seem to light up. Like the big red light on the Fenris will appear fully red even in darkness.

Specular maps add the shine to ships that you see when you shine a bright light on semi-polished metal.

Do you have "Use Large Textures" checked?

Turn of cell, it might be biting your spec and glow.

Glow creates lights, spec makes things shine.

Don't know why you're asking me kas but only the very tip of those two spikes at the back are glowmapped. You probably won't see them unless the ship is disabled though.

I'd suggest a pic of the fenris/leviathan as it would kill two birds with one stone since the model for that ship has been upgraded too.
