...how do we get new peeps to buy Freespace? Up to this point the Interplay store was the easiest way for new people to get the Freespace games . Of course, you can check Amazon.com and eBay but its quite a hassle for those just getting into the game.
Lately I've been pimping Freespace 2 to a couple of friends and actually convinced 2 friends to buy it through the interplay store. I know at least another pal who would like to get his hands on a copy but sadly Interplay's online store seems to be gone for good :(
Any other places where I could direct people (online, at least) to get their copy of Freespace?
-
I saw Freespace at Electronics Boutique the other day for $9.99...

Read your EULA, AFAIK you can burn a copy of FS2 and give it to them. Note, I said give.
You may make copies of the Software
for your personal noncommercial home entertainment use and to give to friends and acquaintances on a no cost noncommercial basis. This limited right to copy the Software expressly excludes any copying or distribution of the Software on a commercial basis, including, without limitation, bundling the product with any other product or service and any give away of the Software in connection with another
product or service.
-
Then why not put it on HLP??
The law says we can!
-
There was a copy on Home of the Underdogs, and I think they were thinking about putting a full installabe-from-scratch version on Gamespy before the new copies of fs2 came out.
-
Yeah
I do hope that the full version of FS2 would be up as downloadable again since the Interplay store went down. Good thiing it is now technically legal now for us to give copies of FS2 for free.
Though, I wonder what happened to all those unsold copies of Freespace 2 (among the other games) in the Interplay store?
It would be nice for another company to pick FS2 and sold it again with all the enhancements from the SCP (with the permission and commision for the modders and coders, of course) and an updated Multiplayer service (RIP PXO) at a reasonable price :)
I'd buy it again just to support it.

That's the thing, the EULA came with the game when it was first published. It's always been legal to give it away.

One other thing, friends and family does not warrant mass distribution on a site like Fileplanet. Off course, I have strong religious believes that everyone is my friend, but I doubt that'll hold in court.
-
May I ask what religion? :)
I'm pretty sure they'll see it different.

None, I'm an atheist, and was making things up as I went.
Just as I'll be of a peace loving religion the moment some idiot re-instates the draft, and my eyes aren't bad enough to get my sorry ass out.

 The best kind, really....

Jedi Knight is a good one to go for :) You can then claim that the Dark side of the force is weak in the enemy and you don't wish to fight them. :D
I suggest it cause it's an officially recognised religion but no one can actually say what it's tenets are :D

The rules state friends and acquaintences....
ac·quain·tance Listen: [ -kwntns ]
n.
a. Knowledge of a person acquired by a relationship less intimate than friendship. b. A relationship based on such knowledge: struck up an acquaintance with our new neighbor.
A person whom one knows.
Knowledge or information about something or someone: has a passing acquaintance with Chinese history.
Everyone who visits this board does so because of a common interest in Freespace 2, to me, that says we are all acquaintences.
-
So basically, we ought to start a campaign to give out FS to all our friends, and get them to give it to all their friends, etc. Won't take us long, what with exponential growth and everything... ;)
-
If you have 30 people and they each give each other a copy of FS2 how many copies of FS2 are there? 30! (as in 30 permutations or whatever it's called)
-
Sometimes I wish everybody including my mother is into space combat sims...
-
30! is 30 factorial.
-
Well, look at it this way, I probably know more about the daily lives of some of the people in this forum than I do about some of my own work colleaugues, and they would certainly be classed as acquaintences in civil law :)
As long as that person has made at least one Freespace 2 related post in this Forum, and got a reply, that would be enough I would have thought.
If you needed evidence, just add 'Pleased to make your acquaintence' to the Welcome Beam ;) hehehehe
-
I'll put them up :)
Really if you submitted to the Forums, it would be ok...
-
Well, the legality would have to be checked properly, but I would say that a group of people who discuss a common subject, and who access each others abilities at times, is about as close to an acquiantence as you can get.
-
Yeah, agreed, but we do not want to have a public URL, and most certainly do not make it look "offical HLP policy" in any way. We have to make sure there are only persons getting sued, not the forum/Gamespy as a whole. Keep it to PM's, and off-site hosting.
-
Agreed, it would be imprudent to have an open link, because it would be free for access to people who have never participated in this board, and therefore wouldn't be considered acquaintences. Basically, as kasp says, we wan't to make the game available to those who have participed and shown interest in the community, but cannot get/afford it, not take the piss out of[v]'s generosity in this.

I want the 20th Aniversary Editon so I can mount it on my wall. Either that or use it to pass down to my children (what do you call that?). *Child: Grandpa what is that? Grandpa: Why its Freespace 2 a game passed from my great grandfather down to me. Child: Hey isn't that the same race we are in war with? (Grandpa hides) Gradpa: They'll never find me!*
-
I found out through my, well step grandpa. I'm surprise he doesn't come here... Or does he? :nervous: I haven't seen him in 2 years :(
