Title: Spiderman II - what did you think?
Post by: Stealth on July 01, 2004, 12:50:06 pm
what did you guys think of Spiderman II?  i saw it last night, and i think it was great!  I think it was easily as good as the first one, perhaps even better.

I've not seen it, but I have a question based on certain reviews I've read:

Parker has some thing going on with the landlord's daughter, right?

Well, could she be Gwen Stacy?

I'm skipping it. The first one was bad enough and despite the good reviews I've heard it got, I've heard bad things from friends who saw it.

I still haven't found a reason to care about superhero movies. I did saw X-Men II, because it had Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in it. 'twas decent.

Any film with both Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in is definitely worth watching.

I'd much rather have seen Mary Jane in spandex.

Two thumbs up here.  Just as good and possibly better than the first one.  I found that the fight scenes were fairly well done, the CGI was perhaps average in comparison to some of the other things we've seen but still quite alright, the humor was absolutely priceless (I wasn't expecting to laugh quite as much as I did), and the plot twists and gets ever more complicated.

Excellent movie!  Lots of fun!

I agree.  there was a nice twist of humor in it that the first one didn't have, and some of the action scenes i think were very well done

I saw last night as well. It was pretty good. The fight scene's were excellent, as was the humor. IMHO it focused more on what being a superhero meant. For instance, what are you suppose to do when you've promised to be somewhere and you see a crime or something happening.

The movie was so good I only got up once to refill my coke and use the restroom. (yes I was hurtin' by the end) I give it a 1 outa 5 breaks.

.....Well, it is a 44oz cup x2, so I had ~ 88oz's of coke!!! Plus whatever I drank at supper!

It's the superhero movie that wouldn't end!  It seemed like it was getting long toward the end even though it only clocked in at around 2 hours.

It's a good Superhero movie and a good movie.  It's getting so many good reveiws because it's almost an arthouse picture, because he spend ~85% of the film in high-angst moments as Peter Parker with only a smattering of excellent, but all-too short action sequences as Spidey.

BTW, you'll love the asian musician chick singing the old theme song from one of Spidey's myriad incarnations from years back.

Spoiler:

Everybody except Aunt May and some guy in a sewer find out Peter is Spidey.

Uh, Mary Jane realised Peter was Spiderman at the end of the first film. When she kisses him she pauses for a second then is all "WTF?" and looks at the back of his head funny.

Thus the "she always knew" sort of thing.  She suspected...but she was never sure.  Which drives some of the plot in the second movie.

Doc Oc is a way better villain than the Green Goblin.  None of that pumpkin bomb ****, he's live-action tentacle hentai man!

Haven't seen either movie, but Doc Oc looks ridiculous. Why in the world did the director feel the need to expose his flabby, middle-aged chest to the world? He just looks so inauthentic.

IMHO, the Green Goblin/Norman Osbourne is the best villan in the Spidey universe, and one of the best in any comic books universe. For one, he's a genius, and he likes to play mindgames and manipulate people. He has no conscience and has almost unlimited power. And his goal in life is to bring as much suffering on Peter Parker as possible.

I'm probaby not going to watch either 1 or 2, cause I don't want to spoil my fond memories of Spidey.

I've yet to see a superhero movie that captured the spirit of the comics I read when I was young. Let's see a Three movie version of Secret Wars, THEN I'll be impressed ;)

well, I just saw it and it was pretty good. If you saw the 1st one I'd go see this one too. At the end it strongly hints that Harry Osbourne will be the next villain, which is a shame because I think they should have Venom in the next one.
btw, Venom/Carnage is the best villain not the Green Goblin.

Hell yeah. Carnage is crazy man psycho. That would be a great "darker" Spiderman movie. He's really an interesting character if you develop him properly.

Norman Osbourne is still the best villan. Whereas Carnage is just crazy, and Venom is just confused and violent, Normy is a psychopath. And not to mention that he owns like half the world, so he's got  resources aplenty. He's way smarter than any Spidey villan, even Doc Oc. Brilliant man, but pure evil, which makes for a great villan.

I like/liked Harry! That sucks he's gonna be the next baddy.. although his company is ruined and he did just find out his father was the Green Goblin from two years back, and then he found the performance enhancer fluid... so yeah, doesn't look like there's much of a way out of it. And actually, MJ's fiance looked pretty pissed at the wedding when she no-showed, I wouldn't be that surprised if they found a way to bring Venom into his character in the third installment. Shame we have to wait a few years until 2007... meh...

The film lacked flow.

It seemed too disjointed and segmented.

The acting, effects and story were good. It just suffered from poor editting methinks.

Still a damn good film though. Especially the bit in the train.

I liked this one better than the first one.  Man, Doc Oc is so badass, I wish I had those tentacles.

Actually, MJ's fiance(John Jameson) is the Moonwolf or somesuch, he was mutated by some strange rock he brought back from the moon and he turns into a Lycanthrope every once in a while.  The next Spidey appearance will probably been in the upcoming FF movie.:blah:   Which I don't hold out a lot of hope that they'll get right.

The problem is that you don't physcially 'see' Reed Richards morphing into shape in comics, I have a feeling he's going to look like the 'New Shmoo' if anyone remembers that cartoon :(

Saw it last night, tons better than the original. All the women screaming obnoxiously aside, it seemed like a 'real' movie and less of a dramatic superhero movie, like the first spiderman did (which probably had to do with the cheesyness of the Green Goblin.)

Doc Oc was a great villain in that, he actually had some depth too him. He wasn't a total monster or anything, just a really overconfident man. I also liked how a lot of the movie was Spiderman fighting himself rather than villains... although I slightly missed the old amount of action. I'd much rather have a little kickass tentacle fightign than a bunch of cheesy machine gun strafing and flying about though, so I was happy. :)

Great movie, can't wait to see the next one.

I want to see Venom, coolest bad guy ever, quite posably becase he isn't 'a' bad 'guy' but more of an amorphus quasi-sentient blob of pure evil.

I want to see a Thor movie, myself. Or Iron Man. Their choice.

That's comic canon though, I believe. Harry finds out about Norman, spiderman etc. and takes up the role of the Green Goblin.

er...Aunt May at least suspected it, if not knew it, otherwise she wouldn't have given Peter him that "hero" speech.

*bump* (Noo, I don't care. :p)

Just saw this last night - finally. Loved it; am going to see it again with another group of friends at some point.

I never read the comics, so I didn't know that Harry does turn into another green goblin, but from the movie's ending, I was more convinced that Harry was sickened at the realization that his father was the green goblin, and realized that that's why Spidey "killed" him.

I'm also surprised that it ended "happy", particularly between Peter and MJ. That was nice for a change.

The scene where MJ sees who Spidey really is, and he hold up that wall and stuff... that was possibly my favorite scene. "Hi MJ." "Hi."

I didn't realize at first that MJ was trapped under something in that scene.

All I could think "What the...damnit move *****, he's holding up a WALL over you! A WALL! Move!"

Then I saw the wreckage holding her down and it made sense. :D
