Ok, haven't been here for a while. How is everybody?. Anyway, another forum I post on is having a debate about weather or not capships in Freespace to can be destroyed with fighters, or weather it is hard coded into the game that they can not.
I figured if I was going to be able to get a straight and truthful answer to this I was going to have to come here. Please feel free to post your thought. Thank you.

Once a capships hull drops under 20%, only weapons with the 'big_damage' (or similar - I forget the exact name) flag can hurt it. So something like a dumbfire missile can't, but a Helios can.
-
This has been changed in the SCP, the lower a hull get's, the less damage a weapon does. Using the -olddamage (not sure on name) commandline you turn back to the old 20% hard turn off.

Freespace 1 : IIRC Any capship can be killed by fighters except in a few cases where the ship was specifically made invulnerable (i.e the lucifer)
Freespace 2 : When a ship hits 10% (not 20% IIRC) it becomes impossible to damage it with any weapons that don't have the huge flag set. This is pretty much bombs only (except for the trebuchet missile). This only applies to ships which are corvette sized or bigger. Cruisers are fair game.
FS2_Open : What kasperl said.
So since you say Freespace rather than FS1 or FS2 it looks like you were all correct :D

Ladies and Gentlemen - Diplomacy in Action!
:p ;)

I just imagined a senario where both sides were furiously arguing their sides without realising that the ones who say caps can be killed are all talking about FS1 and pointing to the Hades and the other side are all on about FS2 and point at the Tiamat from Proving Grounds.
It always makes me laugh when people argue and turn out to be both right or both wrong :)

Neither the COlossus or the Sathanas can be damaged below 75% by Shivan Super Laser (lucifer's flux gun if anyone doesn't know)
-
Juggernauts have their own special flag. Weapons that don't carry the corresponding flag can't damage them.
-
Huh, well, I was on the losing side of the debat (I meant both games in General BTW) I thought that any ship could be destroyed in both games by anything you pleased.
THank you all for your help.
-
Actually, I think that beams are exempt from those flag restrictions. I've seen beams without the "big dammage" flag take out a destroyer.

Tiamat in Proving Ground CAN be destroyed... if you have the patience to destroy it.
-
The guy who he was debating with was me, and the forums were FirstOnes.com forums.
Outcome was clear. ;)

Provided the Hecate damages it enough...

I know but the Tiamat is the ship where most of us encountered the 10% thing.
It's at the once mission in the game where you're most likely to end up facing an enemy capship, having time to shoot at it and not having any weapons, bombers or capships around that can actually damage it.

I never managed to destroy it.
Comment on a sooner post: YES, it's 10%, not 20%.
I have already mentioned it in another thread that I do not like this 'big damage' thingy, but that was only me. As usual, everyone turned against me. :D
