will be very low key indeed.
its working fairly well, but tweaking is needed.
comments, questions, an orb model, or radar gauge graphics would be appreciated
-
3D radar! Sweet. Congrats on the 4k. :p ;)
-
i always hated that radar mode in Privateer 2
[edit]
I didn't even notice that i passed 5K until now - i probably did it posting one of the multiupdates
-
Uh.. I quite don't understand that radar. :wtf:
-
Dots tell you where **** is in relation to you, lines tell you what direction. Not that hard. :p
-
Could you thicken up those lines? They look too thin on the FS2 hud. Otherwise, cool :)
-
That looks cool  and congrats on 4K.
-
Really cool indeed. I always liked the orb radar in I-war 2

Heh? It's already quite a mess as it is :/
Never liked orbes, they're confusing and that's it.
-
They're not that hard to work out, I like it. But keep in mind that thickening the lines up will make it harder to tell what is where - when there's lots in mission at least.
-
I'm sure they'll look much better with antialiasing.
If you want, this could be settable via a hud_gauges.tbl variable.

No, but they're nowhere as easy to use as the current one either.
-
I think that if you drop the directional indicators so that it looks like a 3-D representation of what we're used to it will look better.

Set it via a flag. Choice of radars is definately something that should be under the player's control.
-
yeah, it seem a bit confusing but it show potentials
what I'd do:
the lines shouldn't go from the dots to the external, but the opposite, from the dots to the center.
Those lines shouldn't be complete, or it'd turn in a mess, I think that only a portion of the lines should be used, and you could use the lenght of the lines as an indicator of distance. A better distance indicator would be the luminosity of the dots, tho
Or, you could render only the horizontal plane (the same H plane of the pilot's ship) and use the lines to show the height of the dots from that plane

Not for you, maybe :)
-
Kara: a "force old radar" flag should be implemented, and a "force new radar" too, but I think that the HUD table ought to do thos normally. It'd just be another step into difference between ships. So that if you change units, you really do have trouble settling in.
-
Great job PhReAk!
But I must ask, what is wrong with the old radar? I personally didn't have trouble with it.
And I'd say to go with KARMA's idea about a plane and lines to indicate height. It worked for Battlezone 1 & 2. ;)
-
I like it. I want to see it working in-game!
-
Maybe have the brightness of those lines toned down a bit, so the "dots" would be easier to see.
Could be clearer to only draw them for hostile ships.
-
Really nice work Phreak, now all I have to do is make conversions of all the Elite ships......:nervous:
;)

I know, but since the dots tell you the direction anyway....
Great stuff, anyway, Phreak :)
-
I am curious how quickly we will learn to find our way on this radar screen.
-
When I typed out my post, I was thinking of the line width size. I too figure this should be settable as a command-line argument, with the default being the old radar.
-
If command line parameters were able to attack, they would have already began their invasion on your software. If they were intelligent, they would know there are enough of them to invade the forums.
:D
OK, this is the last post for today, Good Night, everyone!
-
I'd like the radar to be able to indicate a difference between fighters, bombers, cap-ships, etc.
-
It should be an in-game option, I think.
And I like Trivial Psychic's suggestion.
-
Flag, IMO. I thought the regular radar was fine and easy to use. The 3D radar looks cool, but I'm sure it would take getting used to. At least for me :)
-
Getting used to it will not be a problem, but understanding it!

Different shades of the relevant colour should do that. Dark green for huge friendly ships. Light green for friendly fighters etc.
-
One thought, maybe it would be better to have the 'tails', rather than radiating out from the centre, drawn down to the same horizontal plane as the player, that way, at a glance, you can tell how far above or below you the object is? I'm assuming the current way is a'la Independence Wars, and I also know my one is more like the Elite radar, but hey, it shows my age :)
-
Are you THAT old?
-
LOL Not really, only 31, but I remember Elite well enough :D It was my first introduction to the breed of game that led to Freespace :)
-
Elite is a classic, still got the game for the amiga and pc :o
-
I'm assuming you mean Elite 2 : Frontier (Which I have and managed to reach the rank of deadly on). .
The original Elite is older than the Amiga is :D
-
Very. Nice.
Will take some getting used to though...

Got that elte2 on the amiga :D but have the amiga and pc version of elite aswell.
-
Really? I never new Elite was released for either. I might go take a look for that one day :)
-
its been finished. in future builds posted after August 2nd, use the -orbradar command line flag to activate.
any ships/bombs that are within weapons range will be drawn pointing inward, otherwise they will point outwards
-
Cool.
-
in is in range, out is out of range. that's just BRILIANT!
now I have to DL this.
-
You should change the thing where if you target an enemy, it changes color, not gets bigger. The big capital ships should be big, the fighters should be small, IMHO.
-
now delete those ugly radar .ani :]
-
i can't draw
-
I'll make something if someone will tell me how to make .ani's
