Ok im not very programming adept so tell me exactly what I need for the most up to date SC and that wont mess up my game.

most up to date and won't mess up your game generaly don't go together, the most up to date builds are here (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=97) other than that try 3.6

I'd reckon that lovely big installer with 3.6 is worth a shot ;)
