Bethesda has bought the rights from Interplay. They (Interplay) are to have nothing more to do with it.
...so it IS possible. Are you pondering what I'm pondering?
edit: that what I get for not checking the spelling. Admins, if you could please correct that?

God damn you.. I was two seconds away from posting this myself..
Hers a better link..

Freespace!? what's to become!?
-
Don't bloody jinx it.
-
****space!? What's to become of ****space!?
-
Excellent
-
I hope they are allowed to use the progress that was already made at Interplay, cause they had it pretty far along IIRC.
-
Better do, i don't want a first-person RPG like morrowind. Herve Caen is slowly going insane i think, wants to make a MMORPG, gone whacky he has.
-
There are links to a ton of interviews with Bethesda, over at No Mutants Allowed

I'll cry(aka commit acts of war against bethesda) if it doesnt have Special, or isnt isometric or has realtime combat. It already looks bad
Pete Hines: Our intent is to develop and publish the game for a number of platforms.
:shaking: :shaking:
I hate interplay, it'd been too easy to sell it to Troika or someone.
-
I think that doing it KOTOR style would be cool. I never dreamed that you could retain all the good qualities of isometric, while being immersed 10x in the world, but they proved me wrong..
-
I think the best bet is that they'd make it 3rd person 3d (like KOTOR) with turn based combat.
I'm thinking this is going to be the case since they are mentioning they want to use their latest tech for the game. That would mean the engine they're using for the next TES game.
-
this is Good news :)
-
good news indeed, can't wait to see screenies.
-
Cool, thanks for the news. Front page. :)
-
ARRRGHHHHHHH why couldnt Troika get it.
if its not Timmy C then its gash.
real time linear BG clone here we come!
-
What's the deal with Turn-Based? I despise turn based for everything except Empire-Builders, such as Alpha Centauri or even better MOM(which desperately needs a sequel).
-
The game can be played in either real time or turn based. Turn based is just a hell of a lot less confusing.

Then you despise UFO : Enemy Unknown which makes you either a fool or completely tasteless.
Either way your opinions have therefore been proven to mean nothing :p

Let's see:
X-COM
The Gold Box D&D Games
Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil (Best interpretation of the D&D combat rules yet, it's a pitty that they didn't choose a better module with more actual roleplaying though... and a pitty that the publisher gave them such a low word count and censored a lot of the quests they wanted to do...)
Yup, they're all descpicable
-
Even KOTOR is turn-based.
-
An real RPG can NOT BE REAL TIME
real time relies on quick player input which over rules the basic tennants of RPGs the PCs stats.

In what cockeyed excuse for a universe?
You think that because of D&D, D&D is turn based because it's played around a table with friends. There is no good reason for a CRPG to be turn based when a suitably convienent button is mapped to PAUSE.

*kaff* that's a narrow-minded view on things, now isn't it?..
lessee, what "real time" rpg's we have
IRC RPG's.. free form, Creative group-writing RPG (CGWRPG) that sorta thing
morrowind
deus ex 1 & 2 in one degree or another
system shock 1, 2
just to name a /few/
the meat of an RPG ISN'T whether it is real time or turn based..
it's stats, and the fact that you have somebody's shoes to fill, and a role to play.. hence the term "Role playing Game".
-
As a Fallout lunatic type person (branded the most insane fan group on the net which is nice) a CRPG with chracter creation and stat and skill advancement really needs to rely on the PCs attributes rather than the players ability to twitch game.
With DX1+2 and SS1+2 great games but id rate them more as FPSs with RPG qualities. IRC RPGs arnt really included in the CRPG remit and morrowind combat is a bit **** which is why im really worried that Bethesda have the license.

So you wouldn't classify the Baldur's Gate series, the Icewind Dale series, Neverwinter Knights or KOTOR as true RPGs? Thats silly.
I personally find that the pause-at-any-time system woks perfectly. Often when playing BG, I would pause every 5 second during battle, give the orders, and then unpause, let it play out, then pause again and so forth. I think that there are times when real-time is perfectly acceptable, but having the option to pause during battle is good, since it can get a bit hectic, and amounts to a realtime-turnbased hybrid.
I also doubt that Bethesda will make it first person, they're not that stupid. They may pull in the persepective a little ala Neverwinter Nights, but not 1st person. You guys seem to think that just because Company A is making it, this game will have all the characteristics of all the previous games made by the same company. And I don't really see the logic in that. They will make Fallout 3 with the Fallour series in mind, not the Elder Scrolls series. Now granted, somone like Obsidian may be a bit better suited to the task, but Bethesda is by now means a mediocre developer.
-
and Opsidian is doing KOTOR2
which is great actually because in Opsidian there is many key peoples from Black-Isle
-
I would classify them as RPGs just not in the same league as Fallout (decent adventures certainly but the RPG aspect is marred by the linearity) , and they are TBP systems (turn based pause) not real time. TBP i would think is the best were going to get, which is a shame.
Have you read the interviews? Bethesda are sticking to what they do best. Its either going to be first person or near third person.
Pete Hines: Again, it's early to say, but it wouldn't be a leap of faith to say that we plan to use technologies in development otherwise. You could make some fairly safe leaps of faith that it would be similar in style. We're not going to go away from what it is that we do best. We're not going to suddenly do a top-down isometric Baldur's Gate-style game, because that's not what we do well.
Obsidian, Silver Style and Troika also bid for it, Troika was the highest bidder until bethesda swooped in with their eldar scroll coffers.

ookay, obviously we got our lines crossed somewhere, you're going on about real-time vs turn-based.
well, i got news for you bucko, it makes no difference, play arcanum, or fallout tactics, it gives you the choice of real-time, and turn-based.
hell, even P&P rpgs have a degreee of 'real time' to them, as it's all up to the roll of the di, you cannot pause, or put a halt to the other players, or the gm's mind.
RPG, stands for ROLE PLAYING GAME (yes, i do realise that you'd know this, but i'm just being an ass :p and i'm trying to make a point)
it doesn't say anything about whether it's real-time, or turn-based, combat.. some people like twitch gameplay, some like to patient in their tactics, it's really up to them..
but, don't say baldur's gate, or anything like it isn't a true rpg 'cause it's not turn based 'cause that ain't true, and you know it, as i said before, RPG's just give you a set of shoes to fill, and a character to develop the way you want it, you're playing a role, whether it be knight, palalidn, cleric, or jedi. you create a character, to play that character, and that's your role to play..
and baldur's defined the RPG genre for quite some time to come. it was epic. now, i've got fallout, and fallout 2, great games.. decent ones at that. but, it's an RPG nonetheless. if you say that baldur's is not an "True" RPG, you're doing the entire genre a grave disservice.
and let's face it folks, turn-based gameplay is as old as dirt itself, take a look at chess for pete's sake.
:p

KOTOR 2 is coming out soon and Bioware has the Dragon Age project under works...
Now FAllout 3 might come...
Looks like happy days are coming!
*Baldurs Gate series - THE best RPG out there. Fallout comes in second.*
-
I don't know exactly why but I've got the feeling that DragonAge is going to suck hot sweaty donkey balls.
-
Bioware has the Dragon Age project under works
and Jade Empire damn that game looks sweet (only Xbox game)
-
Made by Bioware though. They have a great track record.
-
Stupid Besthasda "Hey we've got money, so lets buy Fallout and rape it! yeah, we could rape the franchises rotting corpse. Can't like someone like Troika make Fallout 3, they might make something true to its roots."
At least they've bought the rights to SPECIAL, we means it'll be using that.
-
They probably wont, the rights were chucked in for next to nothing I dont think they are going to go out of their way to use it. Especially as its fundementaly different to the core stat systems in their current games.

Of course, every game is a role-playing game. Except Tetris :nervous:
-
I think that Fallout 3 will be just great game
-
we'll wait and see for ourselves until judgement is passed.. it's rather stupid to say "oh, it'll be crap" before it's even pre-alpha'd
oh yeah:
