Title: Windows Defaults.........
Post by: an0n on July 14, 2004, 04:37:02 pm
We all know Paint, Notepad and the now-defunct MS-Chat are all awesome programs.

But there's a whole heap of crap that never gets used that's just bundleds in with Windows.

A few of you will know about PING and TRACERT and WINIPCFG and stuff like that, but I was screwing around in XP and found a neat little program by the name of WinChat.

It's installed by default on XP and is in the Other directory on the Win98/95 CD. And it kicks ass.

It's a nice, simple little program that lets you talk to other people on the network.

I think I'm in love.

Anyway, what other little gems has anyone found in the Windows directory?

OMG!!

I remember that program, I used to call people up who were just in the other room for fun. :D

Too bad my laptop won't work on the Windows network or I'd call myself up. :D

Didn't it appear in Win 3.11? Along with WinPopup? :drevil:

Minesweeper was a fun game. I personlly loved tweaking the settings to super hard then getting someone to play only to find out that every square they pushed was a mine. Good fun

5) DirectX diagnosis = dxdiag.exe (Diagnose & test DirectX, video & sound cards)
6) Private Character Editor = eudcedit.exe (allows creation or modification of characters)
7) I Express Wizard = iexpress.exe (Create self-extracting / self-installing package)
8) Cool Microsoft Synchronization Manager = mobsync.exe (appears to allow synchronization of files on the network for when working offline. Apparently undocumented).
9) Windows Media Player V5.1 = mplay32.exe (Retro version of Media Player, very basic).
10) ODBC Data Source Administrator = odbcad32.exe (something to do with databases)
11) Object Packager = packager.exe (to do with packaging objects for insertion in files, appears to have comprehensive help files).
12) Open Device Manager quickly - devmgmt.msc
13) Program Manager = progman.exe (Legacy Windows 3. x desktop shell).
14) Remote Access phone book = rasphone.exe (documentation is virtually non-existent).

16) Network shared folder wizard = shrpubw.exe (creates shared folders on network).
17) File Signature Verification Tool = sigverif.exe
1Cool Volume Control = sndvol32. exe (I have included this for those people that lose it from the System Notification area).
19) System Configuration Editor = sysedit. exe (modify System. ini & Win. ini just like in Win98! ).
20) Syskey = syskey.exe (Secures XP Account database - USE with CARE! Virtually undocumented but it appears to encrypt all passwords. NOT sure of all implications).
21) Microsoft Telnet Client = telnet. exe
22) Driver Verifier Manager = verifier. exe (seems to be a utility for monitoring the actions of drivers, might be useful for people having driver problems. Undocumented).
23) Windows for Workgroups Chat = winchat.exe (appears to be an old NT utility to allow chat sessions over a LAN, help files available).
24) System configuration = msconfig.exe (can use to control startup programs)
25) GroupPolicyEditor = gpedit.msc used to manage group policies, and permissions
26) System Monitor = perfmon.exe (very useful, highly configurable tool, tells you everything you ever wanted to know about any aspect of PC performance)

Well, I found out about winpopup quite a long time ago, but it lags teh bloody helll out of a system when you're sending. And I turned it as off as possible after I keept getting leetspeak messages during German classes (the only class where others had laptops too).

[color=66ff00]Methinks that's the updated version of winpop an0n, it was a little network messager built into 95 and I think 98 also.

Been a while since I messed with 95 though so I might be off the beaten track.
