This isn't a thread for insults or the like.
I'm asking you in all seriousness how much you'd be willing to donate via pay pal or some other similar agency so that we could buy the licence as a community. The money will be used to buy the FS3 (and maybe even FS1 & 2) licenses. What we'd do with those is the subject for another topic like this one (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,25171.0.html)
DO NOT post silly answers. I want the amount you would really put your hand in your pocket for.
only post ONCE. The number of posts will be counted against the number of votes to make sure there is no irregularities.
I'm working dollars (roughly equivalent to the Euro about 1.5 dollars to a pound).
This thread is just to get an idea of what sort of level of cash we could raise. We'll be round with the collection tin later if it looks like it might be worth it. Obviously some people will pledge support but not give it while other people will join late and give a donation.
BTW when one of you admins post can you tell us if the possibility exists of giving anyone who does donate a special avatar to recognise their contribution?
-
As I said, I'de give $50, probably more if it was within grasp.
-
$50, more if in grasp like Rictor.
-
If it's real, $30. I have no income, realistically, so that's a lot for me. :p
-
First I'd see who's trying to buy the rights. Then I'd want to see how is being offered.
[editted since I don't like being inflammatory]
-
$20
since I don't have any job yet :(
-
As I've said. 50 with the possibility of more from two of my roomates.
-
I'd be willing to donate 100+ hundred dollars.
EDIT: I could go up to two or three hundred dollars if the rest of the community was truly serious about this.
-
how much is the Freespace lisense anyway?
I would be willing to contribute 20 at least
-
I think we are UT
-
5 Euros... sorry :(
-
im pretty ignorant about these things but are the FS 1,2,3 licences separate?
-
No, it's all one liscence. Please keep posts to only what you're willing to donate.
-
Incidentally. Can't we simply tie up the Freespace3 license instead?
Remember Descent: Freespace ?
It was called that and not Freespace because another company has already taken that (some ram compression program or something).
-
Once again, if you make a post, please put what you're going to donate at least somewhere. I'm going to start a comments thread for this.
And I don't believe we can get a seperate liscence.
Please post all further non-monetary replies in the new thread I am creating.
-
Ahem.
As currently unemployed, fifty to a hundred is about it. 'Course, unlike some here I'd probably actually do it, if nothing else just to tweak Smart and encourage you monkeys to get on with the new SCP releases. You won't get enough, naturally, but it's still worth the shot.
-
About 100$, since I don't have too much money.
-
I donated $150 (in supplies that I went and got myself) to Iraqi school childeren the other day just for the hell of it, and becase it's something I beleive in, that was a spurr of the moment thing, as of now I'm going into "I want something very expinsive" mode, and not spending a dime, if this shows any sign of working, I'll skip next semester of school in order to get the nesisary funds.
oh, and $3,500 at least.
-
At least $15 from me. Being a student without a job sucks :(
-
$50 no problem, Foot Locker pays well ;)
-
I'd lay down $50, but only after a non-profit(or some similar organization) was created to make sure there was reliable control of the license, and there was an assurance that FS3 wouldn't be simply made by the community(they do good work, but FS3 deserves a dev team, nothing less). This really has less to do with FS3 however, and more about ensuring that FS1/2 were completely free, and everyone could have it if they wanted.
-
More than $50. Precisely how much more depends on a variety of factors, but it could conceivably be a lot more.
-
I'd give 500 dollars.
-
200$ but if this is really going somewhere i would but some more
-
I'd donate 10 dollars.
-
As of right now....$800.
-
Wow...that's an incredible amount of support for just for posts.
Come on silent majority...postpostpost! :D
-
well assumeing everyone meant what they said... we've got roughy $5,000
-
I don't earn that much, but I could step up my wages by taking on a lot more hours. Probably close to $500 from me.
-
Please don't forget to promote this thread around the internet.
-
Atleast 50 $, could probably donate more.
-
I'd go for $100+
-
I said 20 in the poll, but that's what I'd donate just to keep things rolling. If we have a real shot at buying the rights, you can count on 100+, and while I have no hope on getting a job, I'll save up and hope my jeans last just another month extra.
-
I put down $15.
If I get a completion bonus for my work (when the contract ends), probably more.
-
I'm piss-poor, but I would propably go in for roughly 50-60e.
-
£50, maybe double that if it'll help but I do have uni next year.
-
'bout 15 notes.
-
NOT DONATING
I have absolutely no money, but I'm big on ideas, so: With the 'Worlds Biggest and Longest Flame War' surrounding Smart, it might be an idea for someone to go post on various places asking for financial support.
There's gotta be tens of thousands of people who think Smart is a cock and alot of those would love an opportunity like this to piss him off.
-
Now that I really think about it... 0
The FS license, it's what, the mythos? So a handful of names, a few, disorganized ship designs and a rather dull alien invasion story? Give me a break, Freespace is cool as a game, not as a universe I'd cram money in.
Rather make my own stuff.
edit: Bleh, posting that I'd donate nothing at the same time as An0n, I feel violated :p
-
it's the game all the content all the missions, everything.
-
At this moment, I have earmarked some $1000 U.S. for the cause. (Note as I'm Canadian, you could say that the exchange will effect the actual amount at the end.)

So what?
-
So we put the game on Gamespy for Free thereby doubling the user base for all new cool stuff by us.
Anyway discussions are really for the accompaning discussion threads.
-
I'd throw about $50 your way, maybe, but only if I got a copy of the game when it was completed ;)
-
I'm kinda broke right now. But 50$ should be possible.
Btw sorry for opening a new thread. My usual route through the forum is :
Modding

General
Then the Mods
Then HLP and HLP News and Art ;)
-
$30 here.

No problem mate, as I said it was a good idea - but it's best to keep things all in one place for reference and such. No need to apologise

It'd make more sense to set up a parallel thread here, as it saves people having to move over and register. IMO. I'm good for at least £100.
-
WOOHOO! Now we're getting somewhere!
-
$50 + more if we're close.
-
$20
-
Admins, please stickie this. Sorry for the bump, I just want this thread at the top, thanks.
-
Meh, the posts in this thread don't allow for a proper money count. :( the poll doesn't either with the whole 50 or more thing.
-
$50 - $300
-
Two things:
The point of the thread is to see if we're within striking distance of beating Smart.
What're we at now (lower estimate)?
-
~7305 US dollars assuming everyone meant what they said.
I'd say about 6500 US dollars to be on the safe side. Not enough. :p
-
Has anyone asked Interplay to fnid out what kinda number we're aiming for?
-
probly in the $15,000 range
-
I think you forgot a zero there, Bob.

With Lonestar's and Bobboau's possible contributions, we have 23,000.
-
$200 or so
-
Anyone know any venture capitalists?
-
ask ebay or google to see if they want a part... :D
-
Put me down for $50, but if we still need more, I'll send in every scrap of money I can find... BTW: does this have to be a paypal sortof thing? Or would I be able to physically mail someone the money? (I mailed GE a CD a few weeks ago, and it did fine)
-
I would be willing to pony up 150$ USD.
-
with my baby comming along all I could get away with spending is 50$... Any more and my wife would kill me.
-
Between $50 and $100

How can you contact them? Their site is down.
-
I'd donate aroud £30 or £40 at the least, dunno how much that works out in dollars. Depending on how much money i have at the time i may donate £50.
-
A pound is about 1.5 dollar, IIRC.

1 quid = 1.87320 USD
http://www.xe.com/ucc/ :D

If it came down to it, I could seriously and honestly put down $10-50 thousand. Yes, thousand - No joke.
-
And how many loans do you intend to take out?
-
Like I said, I seriously can do that, and would for this game. I have far much more than that to spend. I may lurk mostly and not post here much, but trust me when I do - I mean what I say.
-
Remortgage?

No offense, but I'll believe that when I see it.
-
Fine, don't believe me - maybe Derek Smart will believe it. :P I stand by my word...
-
Don't know if this has been mentioned, but where would we send our money?
I'm ready...
Oh and only legit answers please :p

Scan a bank statement showing you have a million bucks in your account and post the picture.

We're discussing where and how the fund would be set up elsewhere on the forum. We'll have something in place soon if it looks like we could raise enough money.
The problem is making it look like a serious attempt to raise the cash. We don't want to scare foreigners to these forums into thinking that this might be a con of some sort.
Then again lots of people gave money to giveboobs.com with much less assurance.
-
Yeah, the problem being how people are more interested in talking about how they'd give a million bajillion squintillion dollars than doing anything productive to make that a remote possibility.
Two days have past, and ****-all has happened on the rather important steps of setting that up. Partly, I guess that's my fault as I didn't account for how bombed out I'd be after going to work yesterday, and didn't have time to try and fill out the forms. But honestly, I'm the only one who even took the trouble to try, and that right there spells out a pretty serious problem for getting the project off the floor.
If I had any say in the matter, I'd lock/delete any hypothetical discussion on the issue until people knuckle down and get to doing something tangible about it. Like, say, setting up that ****ing account so people can try and give all this money. People aren't gonna stay interested forever, you know, and Smart isn't gonna sit back and wait months for everyone to get their act together and start this thing up. It's all happening right now, and basically if the mechanism for donations isn't up by the end of this weekend you're never going to have a snowflake's chance in Hell of going anywhere, and all this drivel about donated funds will just be more spam. You're not 'proving' anything by claiming to be able to give away some absurd (or miniscule) sum. Talk is the cheapest thing on the Internet, and right now it's so cheap here it's a negative value.
-
The idea of the thread was to get an idea of whether or not it was worth setting up a fund in the first place.
As you can see from the fact that most people said over $50 I was somewhat surprised by the amount people were willing to say they'd give.
-
Put TCO up for another 50-100 bucks :D
-
I am, to a certain extent, too, but like I said talk is cheap. While it's not a reflection on anyone in particular's personality here, I think it's safe to run with the assumption that there's a certain inherent flake factor and roughly half the people posting in any of these threads (on HLP and off) are gonna suddenly realize at truth time that it's a lot easier to claim you're gonna give $50 than actually do it. It's also safe to assume there's lots of good people with spare cash who aren't registered here.
That said, yeah, it's been demonstrated that there's some support. That's nice. This discussion has served its purpose, though, and it's time everyone's energies got focussed on making it happen.
-
Ok, serious questions here folks: How will this money be managed?
you gotta think this thru, it cannot be a knee jerk reaction to a percieved falling sky.
How do you do this right? The short answer is this group probably doesn't. Too much anger, too little experience.
Take a step back, THINK about it for a day. This "situation" is what, less than 48 hours old?
-
$75 USD at the end of the summer if this is indeed gonna happen.
-
About 20$.

Will everybody get back his money... ? That sounds like much work for the guy who manages the donations.
