Title: Listen up, everyone: here are a few sound words
Post by: Setekh on July 16, 2004, 07:29:38 am
Well, as you know, the FS community at large has been more active over the past few hours than it has been in years. This is to be expected. But in light of what's going on, especially with the impression we've made over Adrenaline Vault (right or wrong), I'd like to give you all some sound words to think on.
So guys, please take my words to heart. I really do think that everyone has much to gain from this situation, but let's think a little more about what we do and keep our real aims in mind - to gather peacefully, co-ordinate, advance, and enjoy this great game, in whatever form it takes.

Yup, voice of reason. I would suggest you stickify this, but I know that everyone just skips right over the stickied thread for some reason, but this should remain in a visible place.

Basically, it pretty clear than everyone here has the best interests of the game at heart. You could say that our response to yesterday's developments was...rude, and I would agree, but I think that there aren't a whole lot of gamers who would have been any more restrained. Things should settle down a bit down, now that people have had a few hours to cool off. I think its rather obvious, from the discussion at Blues News, VE3D, Penny Arcade and elsewhere, where the gaming community stands on this, and I'm glad that its with us.

Thanks for the support, you folks. I am keen to see this situation evolve over the next few days - I'm disappointed that I'll be away next week for five days, but I intend to make sure things are headed in the right direction before I leave. :)

I don't.  the important threads that are stickied, as you mentioned, no one ever looks at.  if it's an important thread, people will reply to it, and it'll stay near the top of the list

Also, as a note to everyone in this community: we are a proffesional community, made up of very talented people. Let's try to act as mature as we usually do, and not let this fuss make us give people the wrong impression.

Spread the sanity, guys. After having the initial rush of responses (which I don't blame anyone for, but which I think we could have done better with), it's about time for some calm to settle. :)

I think we should thank all the other gaming sites (Such as those that Rictor mentioned) that are taking a stand with us.

Which, regrettably, I have done - with the proper acknowledgement. :sigh:

And again, thanks be to all for the support - the example over at AV of how a few small words by only a few people can have a great effect must reminds us that we've gotta be united on this one, all going in the same direction and knowing where that is. While it may seem so, vyper, it is not merely a matter of optimism; the way we behave here has an appreciable effect on each other, our visitors, and on this situation with Derek. I for one am sure we can, with determination, turn it around and make it positive.

I still think that given his track record with sub par games, his attitude towards his core demographic and his frankly huge ego and lies that this man is not the man to make a sequel to ANY established franchise let alone one that we as a community love. This is worse than any conceivable situation (other than John Romero deciding he wants a pop at a FS3, with time travel) I can think of and I seriously hope that the response deters him (doubt it) or someone outbids him (please).

I'd love to know what [V] thinks of all this, and I wonder what they would have thought of the festivities last night.

Any Publicity is good publicity.

The best thing we can do for FS series, is keep quiet about it and hope DS forgets its worth something, or we tout it and hope he builds it well.

I dont know what to do, so ill wait and see what comes of Derek's decision. Since i have no power over any human man or woman to make them do something i dont want them to, my only choice is patience.

But in light of what's going on, especially with the impression we've made over Adrenaline Vault (right or wrong), I'd like to give you all some sound words to think on.
  • We all love this game. It's hard to swallow for everyone, but I am confident that everyone wants the best for it - even when we disagree. Some want Smart to go ahead; some would have it over their dead bodies. What I want everyone to remember is that no one is trying to be stupid about this - Derek is not, AV is not, HLP is not. This is what happens when we're all passionate about the same thing. Be willing to swallow your pride for a little while, at the very least.
  • Stay cool. This may be the hardest thing I ask you all to do, but I want you all to stop posting for a while. Go away and sleep on this, or just do some reading. I know myself, I am going to withhold judgement at least for 24 hours, while I read up and take stock of all the facts we're presented with. I think it would be wise for everyone to follow suit. This issue is still going to be here tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that.
  • Remember why we are here, and what HLP stands for. I was just having a chat with one of the older members of the community, and we were lamenting how the recent events have shown a side of HLP that didn't exist all those years ago when Thunder and I started up this humble gathering. What are we about? Bringing Modders Together. Are we about burning bridges? Certainly not, especially not on a moment's notice. Try to keep that in mind.
  • As you all know, we have plenty of visitors checking us out now. I want to remind you that we haven't anything to be embarassed about. I personally would like to extend the welcome to everyone new: stay as long as you like, get to know us, and get caught up with it all. As I have said to the HLPers with regard to everyone else, we are just the same as you - we are passionate about this game (sometimes a bit too much), and like you, we don't have the whole picture of what's going on or what's best. We're surely not going to help each other just by arguing. Let's turn this thing around and get to establishing a positive relationship between our two communities. I know that's what I want.
So guys, please take my words to heart. I really do think that everyone has much to gain from this situation, but let's think a little more about what we do and keep our real aims in mind - to gather peacefully, co-ordinate, advance, and enjoy this great game, in whatever form it takes. [/B]

I'd like to strongly reinforce Steak's last point. HLP is simply the most intelligent and passionate gaming community I know of, and if people look beyond the Ever-Growing Thread they can see this is so. We're remarkably friendly to most people (at least those who display a smidgeon of intelligence and common sense) and the work that's gone into documenting and centralising every resource there is on FS (notably, the new site, the wiki, the SCP, and now the recent unification of VW's pertinent content) has been astonishing. In fact it's a feat that no other site I've visited has nearly accomplished. So yes, there's nothing that we have to be embarrassed about, and if people who criticise the community based on the negative comments by a few of our members then they've missed the bigger picture. I'm sure most of us are happy to co-exist with other communities.

You could try former employees to get either a 'neutral' opinion, or to ask for an off-the-record opinion via any contacts they have.  Such as this bloke (http://www.comet-cartoons.com/toons/aboutme.cfm), maybe.

that is not to say that stickyfied threads not getting replied to are not important. Sometimes, as with Setekh's post starting this one, it is just the notice or welcome that is the only important part to a thread needing to be stickyfied. All what comes after is
a) already said in the starting post
b) only agreeing/disagreeing

In such cases, a stickyfied and locked topic would much more emphasize the importance of the starting post than the number of added comments.

Okay, so instead of sifting through over a thousand pages in a dozen threads on five different forums, I'll just ask right here:

Is or isn't Derek Smart definitely 100% without a doubt making FS3?

I was reading through the AVault threads and came across how Mr Smart called HLP a"Lawless cesspit", and almost had to laugh.   Comparing this community against other communities, this one is far from a "cesspit"  Moderation can kill a community, if left in the wrong hands.  We all know the types of people who can do that. This community actually works together for a common goal, and projects actually get accomplished.  The people here are friendly, and eager to help with a problem that anyone might have, instead of having several people reply compaining about "using the search function".  This community makes me feel good about the modification of Freespace 2, because this community focuses on the game, and the wants and needs of the fans.     As long as we keep our goal in mind, using common sense, and having the passion, the drive for this goal, this community will continue to flourish as it has in the past.

Heres my two cents.

I came to this community a little over 3 years ago and I'll never forget the reception I got. I used to go to the old vbb until one day, when I was musing over a freespace movie idea, I heard of this place. I came here posted it. And even though the idea wasnt very good, people accepted me in. And I decided to stay. And in all the other forums I've gone to since, I've never know a community more understanding, more "close", more comfortable with each other than HLP. The last word that ever came to mind of HLP was that it was elitist. Yeah we love Freespace and thats what the basic core of HLP is, but I personally think its become more than that. We've become like something akin to a family. We care for each other. When someone has had a rough time, we've always been there for them. And whenever anyone new comes in, we accept them. Openly. As for the Admins, the coolest and fairest bunch I've ever met.

Plus, were a community that circles around modding, and theres alot of forums out there for all sorts of games that circle around modding as well. But few have done as much as HLP has for a game. Granted, we might not be as super popular as Counterstrike and the like, but the SCP is a marvel to behold.

So in my oppinion, whatever anyone says about us, this place is more than a freespace fan forum. Were...Friends...

*sniff*

Allright. I've said my bit.

I agree here, the reason I got incensed is because I consider every member here a friend, even if I don't agree with them all the time, it is the sheer passion that people hold in their beliefs and the fact that we could shout at each other about it and have the admins respect that level of passion, is why I love HLP.

That's one of the reasons I'm taking a break from it all and waiting to see what happens.
