Well...
edit: I thought the wording of the poll made it very clear but it seems some people din't find it very clear so...
The poll is, if you think it will be made, who do you think it will be made by, not who you want it to be made by.

I said 'no', but it's not my preferred option. My preferred options would be (in order from preferred to otherwise)
Yes, by V
Yes, by HLP
Yes, by someone else
No
Yes, by Derek smart

ditto here.

I think it will be made but I don't know who by, I reckon HLP will buy the rights, then lend them to Volition, but that might be wishful thinking
P.S. Does anyone know if http:\\archives.volitionwatch.com is closing?

*bites his tongue*

I voted "Yes, by someone else", because none(or almost none) of the people that worked on FS1 or 2 are still at Volition. I would want the game made by as much of the original creative crew as possible. Obviously, you'd want the best programmers available. But if the reunification of the creative staff is the only way to guarentee a true sequel.
-
I'm still sure that the original guys left their designs and ideas for FS3 behind at :V: if it was ever to be made.
-
Where's the 'I have no clue' option?
-
kietotheworld: VolitionWatch archive is still up but a lot of the files seem to be corrupted so I suspect it'll get killed off.
I've been trying to pull a dump of as much of it as I can but it's taking a while since I can't throw wget at it, and I'm finding myself having to dicard a lot due to the corruptions.
It's really painful, espescially since the host websites for most of them no longer exist :(
As for FS3, well, thanks to all the infantile idiots I think we've pretty much put off everyone from picking up the licence up if DS doesn't.
I reckon he could make a decent go of it - the technical skill is there, but I don't think he'd get the 'soul' of FS3 right without help.
Ideally I'd like Volition to make FS3 (Wouldn't we all? :)) but they seem to have abandoned FS for more lucrative markets much in the same way LucasArts abandoned the X-Wing simulator series for the more profitable Rogue Squadron console-y games.
Whoever does it - The main hook will be the Storyline. If they get this right, it will do well. If they try to win by eye-candy and neglect the story, the game will get murdered by our FSO.
As it is, whoever does it will be up against stiff competition in the form of B5 and BWO - These productions look to be killer mods for FSO; Their only Achilles heel is the lack of time available to the devs, which gives commercial devs time to pull off something good, but if they screw it up or take too long B5 and BWO will trump them seriously.
-
The poll is not obvious: What are you curious for? Who I want to make FS3, or who will actually do it?
I voted for 'Yes, by Derek', because it seems Derek and his respective team will make FS3.
If you ask who I would like to make FS3, I would say Volition.
-
who you want
-
Who is "Derek Smart?"
Edit: never mind!
-
We woudl ALL want it to be Violition, but let's be resonable - that's not ganna hapen.
Now, people have been attacking Derek Smart like crazy. Sure, he made some ****ty games in the past, but that doesn't mean he'll screw up FS3.
Yes, the possibility is there, but he KNOWS that the comunity won't touch it unless it's really good, so he will probably do his best.
Maby he will pull it off, maby not - either way, no one can tell for sure.

You're forgetting - he has stated multiple times in various forums that he doesn't care about the opinion of this community.

But he has also stated that he would make a good game and talk to the right people to find out where the story goes...

He also stated that making Freespace 3 would be 'below his abilities'. (Despite having a string of sub 70% titles, the last of which failed miserably in it's aim of being a more accesible, combat rich game)
And you're assuming Volition would co-operate with him, which I have doubts over (although i'd like to hear some form of official feedback on this).
I believe the exact quote was that he 'didn't give a toss' about the HLP communities opinion of his plans.
Look, i'll admit that I am & was slightly biased by what I've heard of Derek Smarts reputation. But so far it's been completely backed up by what he's said - in fact, I actually have found him to be the single least professional person I have ever encountered, both in the internet and in real life.
He's consistenly criticised this community, simply because myself and other had the audacity to criticise him. He's acted in a childish, immature manner towards anyone who's questioned him, took the huff here because people objected to his arrogant dismissal of any complaints or worries, and threatened legal action against a couple of members at HLP for a joke comment.

Since when must a programmer/project lead be profesional?
Many of us here arer not in the least and we have made great stuff for fs2..and that's coause we love it and have some talent.
The question is, does Derek Smart love FS3?
-
yea, I read what he said about HLP... Not to happy about that.
-
People are threatening to "kill him" jokes or not.
Patience ;) See what ACTUALLY happens before melting down :)
-
Yep, Inquisitor you're right. Sorry, think I'm gonna go to bed, that'd probably be best :)
-
V or bust.

Yes, it will be soon.

I voted V, my second choice would have been someone else, preferably known for space sims, like Egosoft. I just want the company that gets it (if anyone does at all) is that they're proved to make high quality games and they at least get the original storywriters on the project (or at least talk to them).

What's the time frame (If any?)?
Is all the stuff just getting dumped or is it being moved some place??
The thought of loosing all that work is scaring the hell out of me - For maybe 80% of those missions, Archive is the only place you can get them now!
Gah! Must at least... get... Derelict... (I wish they'd released all the voice-packs they did for it. I had all the original ones but lost them in a HD crash *shakes fist at Seagate*, so now I can only pull the non-talky version... :()
-
well, if volition don't develop it, i'm all for them even consulting the developer that does.
-
I don't care what developer picks it up. In fact, had any other developer picked up the license I would have been very happy, but not Smart. His games are abortions and his attitude to anyone that does not suck his ass is abysmal. He is not the kind of guy you want in the games industry period.

When said developer has to provide future support for his games. There's not much point asking for bug support, or participating in beta testing, when negative comments are frequently discarded with nothing more than an insult.
We are not professional in the sense of being paid - but we do try and actually give polite support to anyone who comes to the forums with a problem or looking for stuff.

I haven't seen that, in fact, this has to be the most tolerant forums (especially for people with English as a second language) I have ever had the pleasure of being on.

Not with regards to questions or requests for help. Maybe with regards to proposals to storylines, etc, though.
Sometimes, if peoples english langauge skills are poor in the sense that people can't understand them, then I guess there's criticism - to a degree.

Your experience TopAce. Not the experience of any other person with poor English skills. That should tell you something shouldn't it?
Just quit whining about FS2_Open and you'll find that you have less problems. When you provoke a response it's not due to your lack of language skills.

I haven't critized the SCP for ages now(since 3.6 was released).
-
I voted No FS3 period.
