this is probably a very noob question, but how exactly do I get freespace open to work? what exactly do I need to download and where to put it?

- Have FS2 retail installed and updated to v 1.20
- Download and run the FSO 3.6 installer here:

they contain updated textures, glow maps, various enchatments.
I warn you however, not to use media VP supplied with 3.6. It is too bug ridden, if you know what I mean...

Make sure you note the part in the 3.6 post about the engine failure bug. It only happens if you play 'Very Easy', but it's caused a lot of confusion.

I'm getting normal functioning from FS2_Open with 1.00. Since the 1.20 update was hosted on PXO, if it's not already mirrored on warpcore or somewhere else I'm missing.... we should probably get it out there, or possibly even include it in the next version of the installer.

If you try to play 1.0 on Fs2NetD it will not work, however.
