Title: need help on modelling tank treads.
Post by: Havock on July 16, 2004, 06:27:25 pm
since quite some people use truespace here, i might just have a good chance here :p

how do I model tank treads in truespace?
until i can make decent treads, that tank i made will remain a hovertank instead of a normal tank :p

You can do IK linking, yes? Just make a long line of simple tread links, connect 'em and shape 'em the way you want. Doesn't animate unless you really wanna go in every frame and push the objects into shape, but animating tank treads via geometry is bloody impossible with any software I've seen anyway.

mmh? It's rather easy with max, you animate them along a spline, and it's the spline you deform to follow the ground shape. I' pretty sure most aniamtion packages can do the same anyway.

*Looks at Singh's comic and this thread* Why do I get a sudden feeling I'm not giving out enough work on the MG internal :D

Seriously though. Lets have a look at what you have so far. :)

IK linking didn't get me any wiser, i just used collision detecting to fir the tread-pieces in place, a bit tedious, but if you get the hang of it it's just copy-move-repeat, if necessary rotate around wheel.
here are the pics with treads, and it's up to you guys to figure out what vehicle i used for example :p

it was really rainy here for the past days, and now it's worse.
moddeling kills time.
